PSA Gimmicks-Are The New "Player Worn Cards" A Hit Or A Miss?

I’m a Twins fan and Mauer is one of my favorite players ever but Jokic is on a complete different level

PSA needs to stay in their lane. They should not be creating merch, just grade them.

Plain and simple… these are cool. Ask yourself if you had one, would you think it’s cool? Of course, it will go too far with too many players… but for today, it’s very cool.

This is PSA's way of making us all feel okay with getting lower grades...

Holiday card with value? Shohei Ohtani with Will Ferrell as elf on the card carries the most value aside from the 1/1 hat relics.

Mauer top 50 card is greater than jokic best 15,000 card.

Also u gotta give most of the blame to the school system as aloy have taken cursive out of the new curriculum! (I know because i have a ten yr old) So some of these young kids coming up dont have a signature! Smh damn shame so thats how the "A-C" autos have come about

Jokic >>>>> Mauer all day. Jokic is already a 3x MVP and a Chip. He’s only adding to his resume. Mauer was great with tons a potential he never reached. Got that big contract and stopped hitting HRs. He’s only going to be forgotten faster now.

First off, remember baseball cards have from the get go been gimmicks. A gimmick to get folks to buy tobacco, and later candy/gum. These little things PSA are doing in no way truly affect the hobby, really in any way. Only one of each of these cards were kept by PSA for giveaways, the other six cards were given back to Carroll and Witt for them to give away or do whatever with. Just weird for anyone to really have a strong opinion on this, we have no idea where this may lead until it actually goes anywhere. As of now, this is just a one-off thing, and only really important to whoever ends up winning one of the two.

I like the blue inscription. Contrived? Yes. But i like it. Only 80 cards in the set. Value wise - my opinion - in a few years for the one or two guys who break through will be valued well above true gold. Opinion subject to change.

Jokic is becoming an inner circle Hall of Famer. Not even close. Jokic doesn’t have endless rookies either like other players because he was a 2nd round pick.

I want relic cards with a piece of the player's old Ferrari, or a piece of their old Rolex. A plane ticket from their luxury vacation. Expensive stuff relics. High class items. 🤩 Maybe weird, I don't care. I like rare stuff. 😇

Just give a NICE looking mostly legible Auto.

I'm not really interested in those cards. Something like that really should be going to kids but we all know they'll end up in the hands of rich man children.

Absolutely love listening to you guys. I found your RU-vid channel a few months ago when searching for additional baseball card podcasts, and you guys are hands down the best. I've listened to every episode since discovering you guys, while commuting to and from work, so I thank you for putting out this content. As a collector who got back into the hobby in 2020, I personally typically only collect Indians/Guardians cards as I'm a huge Cleveland fan. I have tons of stuff, but I wanted to ask you guys what your guys' thoughts are on Jose Ramirez cards in the hobby? Do you think he has Hall of Fame potential? I feel like he's one of the most underrated players in the big leagues and he consistently is in the AL MVP race it seems like year in year out. I often hear you guys talk about the greats in the game today, Ohtani, Freeman, Mookie, Harper, etc., but where do you think Jram fits in? I'd be curious to know your thoughts. Also - I hear Scott talk often about how many autographs a certain player has from a given year, or set. Is there an easy way to determine this? Or is it simply just reviewing checklists for all the sets? Relatedly, where is the best place to look for a list of card sets that get released each year? Thanks guys! Another great show. A-C is shocking but nothing compares to Andres Gimenez' 1stBowman auto in 2018 Bowman. It was literally a forward slash. Unbelievable. Mercifully by the time 2018 Bowman's Best had come around he had been shamed into doing a proper auto and it was actually decent. It's worth having a look at his 2018 Bowman auto because it is funny, lol. P.S. The frosting in 2024 Bowman is far too large and detracts from the card. I get that they did it to accommodate the inscriptions but it's too prominent and affects the overall appeal of the card. The design is growing on me, though. Cheers!

Make the My First Bowman Auto an actual 1/1 card slapped with a 1st bowman auto stamp on it like they intended with Series 1 and then "Forgot" to stamp. It's a gimmick that people might be interested in. The Superfractor is still the Superfractor. Yes, there are too many 1/1's already, but at this point, what's one more?

An in game nft combination of a guy signing a card, filmed signing the card, insert the card into a pack, pull the card, then receive the nft as a redemption.. Too invasive but what the heck.

Another great discussion gents! Given the lineage and scarcity of the photographer's proof, members only and first day issue parallels, one would think the hobby would pay a premium for them. Do you think Stadium Club does a disservice to those parallels by not numbering them or publishing an approximate print run number? The hobby is enamored with anything labeled SP or has a / stamped on it.

In hockey, future watch autos /999 are one of the most important rookie cards. 50 of them are “inscribed” and the signers just include the date. They command a significant premium.

"game used" +inscriptions + base cards? Base rookie card. Little value. Base card + in card auto+inscriptions (PSA 9+) moderate value. Game used+base card (PSA 2?) no value. ... If anything they should shove PSA 10 slabs in their pants and try to keep them as 10's then crack them , sign and inscribe , grade and ONLY PSA 10'S are LEGITIMATE

Few other comments… 1) Chris is hysterical. Love the sarcasm and I’m going to steal some of the jokes/comments. 2) Ever consider guest panelists (not replacements, but additions), like Stryker. 3) Episode Idea: “2024 Pre-Draft”. Do an episode in June or July leading up to the MLB Draft that features pre-Draft prospects and their cards in Stars & Stripes, Leaf, etc… 4) Episode Idea: “Hobby Love Bump?”Feature an episode on players that collect cards, asking since they love the hobby does the hobby love them back (is there a hobby-love bump)?…think Corbin, Bobby, Blaze Jordan, Freddy Freeman. 5.) Episode Idea: “Draft 2022, Draft 2023: Where Are They Now” and their cards… are they moving from Single A to Double to Triple A? Think of Evan Carter… could have gotten in very early. The guy from Let’s Talk Wax would be great for this, as a guest. 6. Episode Idea: “Juiced Blaster Retail???”With so much criticism for Topps 2023 Flagship retail missing hits and going to hobby, has Michael Rubin flipped the script and loaded the affordable retail boxes that reach the masses to help 10x the hobby? It seems the case for 2024 Series 1 and Bowman Baseball Blasters. Just ideas. Love the show - and Chris’ cynicism and sarcasm.

My dad pulled a Danny Graves auto when I was a kid. He signed it as “Gravy.” We both thought it was the coolest thing, but there’s definitely a fine line between something random the player decides to do and something that Topps makes them do and isn’t unique since every single player does it.

I'm not the type to spend thousands on a card, but I think I am gonna have to start saving for one of those Mauer cards in the future. If they keep it as free and a giveaway I am cool with it. Larry Walker looks like he uses a ruler when he signs, his auto is sweet. The fact that they are told to write it, is no different than if Bowman Printed "My 1st Auto" onto the card. They will hold a premium of some sort I am sure though. Random inscriptions are cool, Wade Boggs wrote "Chicken Man" on his 1/1 Pristine auto last year.
