Romanian is close to Latin and this Byzantine music style derives from Old Roman Chant used by christians in the first centuries, so this is the closest you can get to how Christian chants sounded at Rome and Constantinopole 1500-1600 years ago. And it's completely inteligible to romanians because it uses modern romanian.

O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks unto the God of gods; for His mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks unto the Lord of lords; for His mercy endureth for ever. To Him Who alone hath wrought great wonders; for His mercy endureth for ever. To Him that made the heavens with understanding; for His mercy endureth for ever. To Him that established the earth upon the waters; for His mercy endureth for ever.
In English we call this specific style the Byzantine Chant, it is the Eastern Christian signature form of chanting. The Western counterpart is called the Gregorian Chant. In Romanian this song would be classified as “Cânt Bizantin,” “Cânt Liturgic,” or “Cântare Bisericească” In terms of musicology, this method of singing which makes the voice continue on and on while sliding the pitch used to be called ornamented singing, however it is nowadays called melismatic singing. Melismatic singing can also be found in North African, Arabian, Persian, and Indian music.
I never knew this: It is 135 in the Orthodox and Catholic Bibles and 136 in the Protestant Bible, including King James! What a surprise! But useful to know if you're looking it up in English.
