10:28 Tip #3 Know a little about the place you're going to be working
12:10 Question #3 How do you handle gossip at work?
12:40 Pausing to answer a question during the interview is POWERFUL!
14:50 How to answer the question, "What questions do you have for us?"
Here’s tip #1, own your honesty. If the interviewers ask you a question and you don’t know the answer or you know it’s one of your weaknesses, that’s okay. What interviewers want--especially those working in psyche--is someone who they feel they can trust and someone they feel can work w/ and someone they feel who is honest. I know if I was hiring someone, I’d rather hire someone who I know I can work w/ and who has a good personality than someone who has a lot of expertise but is a stick in the mud. And for those of you w/ a lot of work experience, you know how important it is to work w/ good coworkers--so in the back of our minds as we interview people we are always wondering, “Hey, is this someone I myself could work w/?” If the answer is ‘yes,’ we have a very good chance of being hired.
Here’s my next tip: try and remember the names of the people interviewing you. Make a mental note of what their names are, and when they ask you a question, use their name when you answer their question.
Here’s another question I was asked during my interview, “What would you do if a client became angry in the day hall?”
Here’s tip #3: know a little bit about the place you’re going to be working. Who do they serve? What demographic is most common? How many beds do they have? Etc. Knowing some basic information will help you answer the question of “tell me what you know about this hospital” and you can also tie this information into some of your responses. For instance, say you’re going to be working at a hospital in a busy city, in one of your answers you might say something like, “Well Jill I’m glad you asked about how I manage my time, and I know it’s especially important in a hospital like this where we are getting patients in and out on the same day. . .so here’s how I manage my time while at work.” This shows the interviewers you are familiar w/ the position and the hospital, and shows you care enough about the position to have some of your own research.
Here’s question #3 and this one caught me completely off guard and so I’ll show you how I answered it. “How do you handle gossip at work?” This question in retrospect was a great question b/c after working in psyche for a while now, I can tell you gossip is rampant inside psyche hospitals and it reminds me of being back in middle school. I had to think about my answer so I told the interviewer, “Jill that’s a great question, give me a second while I think about it.”

I followed your interview tips and I got the job! Unfortunately, I could not accept it. The pay they were offering me was almost insulting. It was for a medical/psych position and I even asked for a counter and they came back with 49 cents more. Please know your worth people and always counter offer.

Wow. I hope you create more of this content. Your humbling humanitarian vision and natural ability to captivate desire through professional experience and personal research is simply fascinating. You are someone who does not accept a simple no or do your outlined job description; then allocates thankless effort exploring documented truth and cleanly apply unforgivable ethic to an endless equation. :applauds: I’m exceptionally heartfelt for fellow humans undiagnosed/diagnosed/deceased whom (will) receive(d) slow torturous chemical lobotomies… appears big corp pharma purposely drives questionable/non ethical directives toward gross profit negating betterment of mankind since the 50s, unsure… Possibly when they realized potential endless profit by limping a live persons along instead of curing heard thinning genetic abnormalities staying an unrecognizable distance from controversial brain function R/D. Further investing massively into police force which get jollies by barbarically physically/mentally punishing misbehaving humans. It’s sickening with nil positive future outlook.

This is a great video! I did get that job btw, but not only that the flow of your video starting with the mindset needed …. made me really start to think about all I do and actually have done which is a lot as an RN in a skilled nursing facility who works with skilled , long term , dementia, and now Covid patients .. watching your video , I started to think about alllllll I’ve done and it gave me the confidence to go into that interview and get hired ! Now I really do have other offers on the table too! So thank you 🙏

Thank you for this! Your videos have completely opened my eyes to psych nursing and made me realize it was exactly the specialty I've been looking for. Do you know much about nursing in homeless shelters? So far that is the only job I've gotten a response from and am wondering if I'll be able to hack it.. Psych definitely gets a bad rep so thank you again for sharing with us!

when I did outpatient I worked here and there w/ our local homeless shelter but they didn't have any in-house nurses--they just had a few homeless people who had home health care/outpatient services. You'll get to see A LOT if you choose the shelter though :)

i have never been aggressive towards anyone, but when i felt anger they put me in a belt bed and injected me with tons of psykmeds. I couldn't walk straight afterwards. I have never been violent. But i have been subjected to abuse in my childhood by alcoholic foster parents. No one talked to me before or after that incident.

being asked about gossip is something of a red flag for the interviewee it's really on management to have that under control; and if they're pre-screening people for it... that's a rather reactive intervention. the job is hard enough as is, without having to navigate a social lattice where your success and safety may rely heavily on someone who is talking behind your back

Any suggestion for the psych interview question: Name one time you made a mistake?
@A_Psych_Nurse
@A_Psych_Nurse Год назад
Hmm. . .me personally I would tell them about the first time I made a med error. . .accidentally gave a gentleman double his liquid depakote when he first started the medication and once I found out I told him I gave him a "loading dose" jokingly, notified the provider, and informed the pt. probably nothing would come of it but that it was still an error and that he should know. so that's my suggestion--maybe tell them what mistake you made and the appropriate follow-up. hope that helps. (and maybe what you learnt from the error!)

Great video! Thanks for the wonderful content 😊 I’m looking to make the switch to psych nursing soon and am looking into facilities. An acquaintance warned me about a certain inpatient facility because it has a bad reputation for management not caring and not good staffing. Also some toxic culture. However it’s a 100 bed inpatient facility with a big brand new campus and I’m intrigued. I’m wondering if I should still consider despite its reputation? Patients there still need care and compassion and I’m sure everything about this place isn’t 100% bad. I can still make a positive impact … plus they pay well. Also pretty negative Glassdoor reviews 😬 Any thoughts? There is also a local, big medical hospital with 4 psych units but there’s no openings at the moment. Also a large state psych hospital and a bunch of rehab facilities. Thanks for any insights or thoughts!

Sounds like the state hospital I worked at :) I say go for it, test it out--maybe there's the option of working as a travel nurse there before you actually apply for a position, or maybe something PRN before fully committing. Sounds like you've got options if it doesn't work out, keep us posted
@claytonb2003
@claytonb2003 Год назад
Yo, so I ended up taking a job at the state hospital. The position is flexible - I make my own schedule and work a minimum of 20 hours a week. I feel good about it. There are travel options available in the area but I didn’t get a call back from any of those. Maybe later on. Thanks for your interview advice and encouragement as I start my psych RN career!
