Original Air Date: June 27th, 2009
I wouldn't say Psychic Force is the best fighting game out there, but it's amazing how overlooked the game is in general. An interesting fighter for certain, Psychic Force debuted back in 1995 in arcades and would go on to have a (very) small cult following. While the games were panned in some magazines (particularly Psychic Force 2012), the game wasn't really deserving of such criticism, IMO. The opening was uploaded a long time ago, so it was skipped.
Psychic Force Puzzle Taisen is the next in the series (A puzzler akin to Bust-a-Move/PB) followed by Psychic Force 2012, which is then followed by Psychic Force 2 (which is the same as the Dreamcast game but with downgraded graphics, extra modes and added characters from the original Psychic Force) and finally Psychic Force Complete (which came with various neat L.E.s). Between Complete and PF2 lies a spinoff of sorts known as X: Unmei no Tatakai, which uses the Psychic Force engine and is based off of the popular "X" anime/manga. It was released for Playstation.
This game is unique for its strategic fighting action and freedom of movement. Characters fly around inside of enclosed arenas and use special abilities based around various elements and phenomenon. Known as "psychikers", they each have their reasons for doing what they do, though most want to aid or prevent the ambitions of a psychic group known as NOAH. Characters each have basic combos, a few forms of defense, a throw, and various elemental attacks that consume different amounts of energy depending on the move and character. For a game made back in 1996, the visuals are impressive from several aspects and the music is cool too (which one comes to expect from Zuntata). The gameplay is interesting and flexible, but you'll find yourself leaning more on long ranges attacks than melee in later battles. A good balance of offense, defense and throws will ensure victory. This is a fun, rare game overall. Enjoy.

I finally found it! I remember playing this at a arcade machine in a pizza shop when I was a kid. I thought I was going crazy since I couldn't find it. All I remembered was characters flying around in a box 🤣

Taito's 1995 arcade title Psychic Force is a 3D fighting game which involves psychic powers. The arcade version used the Taito FX-1A System board, which is based on the PlayStation hardware, that also powered Psychic Force EX, Super Football Champ, Magical Date and Magical Date EX. As such, the PS1 version is otherwise identical, albeit it features an animated intro with the opening song "On the Verge of Revival" performed by Hironobu Kageyama of Dragon Ball Z and Seint Saiya fame. The battles take place in a flying, floating cube on a 2D plane. The characters use a combination of Psychic powers and combat techniques, with each player having their own special abilities. Each character (known as Psychiccers) has attacks relevant to the element they control (fire, ice, thunder, wind, gravity, etc.), while Gates (the only non-Psychiccer) has a built-in weapons system. It's basically Taito's own take on Dragon Ball Z, at least until later 3D efforts developed by Dimps (DBZ: Budokai, Burst Limit) and Crafts & Meister (Super DBZ) came around. In the original arcade version, the player's character goes through eight stages against a specific set of opponents and face off against a specific final boss in the eighth and final stage, which varies and depends on the specific character's storyline. The PS1 version's Story Mode had additional cutscenes in order to advance the story. Unfortunately when the game was released in North America and PAL regions by Acclaim (a company I could never stand seeing at the sight of their logo), the Story Mode cutscenes had a terribly acted English dub as expected from the '90s; the Japanese version featured notable seiyuus like Mitsuaki Madono, Kyōko Hikami, Minami Takayama, and Ryusei Nakao. The game later received an arcade-exclusive update titled Psychic Force EX, released in 1996, which made the final boss playable without using a code, added new color schemes for costumes, and improved gameplay balance. The original game was later included with Psychic Force 2012 in the compilation Psychic Force Complete for PlayStation 2 in 2005 only in Japan, which also had a remixed version of 2012 titled Psychic Force 2012 EX. A shame that the Psychic Force series was overlooked, as it inspired other games such as Yukes' PS1 title Eretzvaju, Omega Force's Destrega, G.rev's Senko no Ronde series (developed by Taito's former staff) and Acceleration of SUGURI.

Jesus Christ, I didn't see this obscure thing in around 13 years. Tried to look it up a couple of this but none were successful until now, all I remembered was fighting while flying and purple energy blasts. Don't even remember if the game was good or not but finally seeing it after all this time feels strangely satisfying.

Another highly under-rated fighter- Star Gladiator - it would have been a total hit had Tekken (2?) not come out around the same time.

Well it looks better than Evil Zone at least. Actually, it reminds me of the Touhou fighting games. Quite interesting.

What the hell is up with her accent? Sometimes she's British and sounds totally fine, but then sometimes she becomes Australian, then she sounds like an Arab trying to sound British, and then she sounds like an Arab trying to sound Australian!
