Picture it: 1983 and 9 year old me watches this movie without seeing the 1st one and had a whole crush on Norman (blame the score). Later we do our yearly Universal Backlot tour and this time the tram acts like it was stuck. Out the motel come THE Anthony Perkins!! He asked us if we would need to check in lol. I guess I looked scared so he comes to my window and says oh don’t worry little girl, I wouldn’t hurt a fly. (I didn’t get it lol) He was there promoting this movie. If you ever see a pic of little black girl grinning hard and hanging half way out the tram to touch his extended hand….Me!!

Psycho II is hands down the best horror sequel ever. Not only does it treat the passage of time between films as real, but it completely subverts the scenario of the first film and makes the audience feel sympathy for Norman. Bless my, ahem, mother for take me to see this when I was a kid.

So the only person Normal actually kills is Mrs. Spool at the end. A nice twist to have a Psycho film where Normal Bates isn’t the main killer. Psycho IV is a prequel and not a continuation of the previous timeline. Neither III or IV are as good as these first two but they’re all still worth your time to one degree or another.

Only half of 4 is prequel. The other half is a solid ending to the franchise . Prequel stuff is pretty key too since we've never seen Norman and his mother younger and it's explains alot 3 is a solid 80s slasher . Good watch but I kinda wish that money went to making 4 the end of a trilogy

I like this better than the original. It does a wondaful job of showing the damage a phycological illness does to the one suffering it. Norman did terrible things that he had no control over and paid the price for it, he struggles with the internal horror that he may relapse almost constantly. He's in his own hell.

_In the Belly of the Beast_ is a book written by Henry Jack Abbott, consisting of letters written to author Norman Mailer while Abbott was serving sentences in prison for manslaughter, forgery, and bank robbery. Mailer lobbied successfully for Abbott's release from prison. Six weeks after his release from prison, Abbott stabbed Richard Adan, a 22-year-old waiter and aspiring playwright and actor, to death outside a café where he worked. (More detail on Wikipedia.) The day after, a review of Abbott's book appeared in the _New York Times._ After a lawsuit, royalties from the book went to Adan's widow. Abbott later (decades later) committed suicide in prison. Mailer has said (basically) that he regrets helping Abbott, but let's not forget that Mailer also stabbed his artist wife Adele Morales, who survived. None of this is to say that people shouldn't get second chances, even killers -- I would actually be okay with a story of Norman (Bates, not Mailer) rehabilitating, which is almost the story _Psycho II_ gives us. But I don't think it's an accident that this is the book she's reading.

The olivia hussey prequel scenes are from part 4 and she was a legit psycho in that movie. I tried watching bates motel and couldn't get into it . Not vera farmigas fault it was the script . It just felt like oh she kills people and is chill while covering it up so shes psycho. That doesn't compare to stuff like Olivia hussey secretly tickling Norman at his fathers funeral then slapping him when he giggles . That's psycho .

Rewatched this during the pandemic and wow, it really holds up as far as sequels to iconic movies! (Mindy and Kirby were not wrong!) I hadn't seen it in probably over 25 years, but those plot twists were pretty epic for the time period (remember early '80s were big on slashers and not big on cerebral plot twists). And I forgot about the knife through the mouth, oooof. What a rude way to kill off a legacy character, but the '80s were notorious for that! (And Hitchcock kinda hated Vera Miles for dropping out of Vertigo when she got pregnant so maybe the writer just did that to give Hitch the last laugh?) I remember 3 and 4 being ok, 3 being more fun (and directed by Anthony Perkins, and second lead man Jeff Fahey being super hot) and 4 being more of a dramatic prequel/character study. But you're really funny, I'm glad I found your channel.

I love that this is equal parts Hitchcock homage and 80s-slasher-era horror. Holland actually says in an interview somewhere that they had to update the violence to compete with the slashers that had come out in the 23 years between films. It's also a better whodunnit than most of the slashers leading up to it, but I think that's because of the Mrs. Poole addition. To be fair, she does show up prominently in diner shots with the notes, and Norman, it turns out, is not hallucinating when he says he's talking to his *real* mother, though we and Meg Tilly assume that he is. I agree that the twist isn't satisfying, but the movie is gilded with some of that bonkers 80s horror energy that I enjoy so much.

Hi Nick great reaction as always I agree with you that the mrs Spool is Norman's real mother twist is a bit unnecessary. I think that either the twist that you suggested about Laila and Mary trying to get him back into custody was good or maybe keep Mrs Spool as a character and the sister angle but make mrs spool Norma's twin and how Spool had a secret jealousy for the fact that her sister had a child and when she died, maybe Norma asked Spool to keep a watchful eye on Norma and that's how the psychosis started, she was becoming unhinged and took her likeness of Norma and the guardian angel role she was given too far. It sort of in effect creates a chicken or the egg situation where you don't know whether this was the thing which made him crazy or whether it went back further. I think an example of a short of late attention to a iconic character or backstory (well I think there are two but I don't want to write too much mild spoilers for Joker and Halloween 2) is with Arthur Fleck has this condition where whenever he is nervous he bursts into uncontrollable laughter. This is not only a good addition but it completely recontextualises everything you think about when you think of the Joker bursting into laughter like at the end of Batman mask of the Phantasm or The Dark Knight interrogation scene. Also the Laurie Strode is Michael Myers sister in Halloween 2 is another good example of this sort of twist working to the films advantage. Sorry this comment is long Nick, Looking forward to more videos all the best and great reaction 👍😊

The house exterior is original*, only part (office) of the motel was rebuilt for this film (the wide shot when Dr Raymond first brought Norman home was a matte painting. It was fully rebuilt for part 3, and has remained on the studio lot ever since.) * The history of the "house" is a bit complicated. Given the cheap construction method of studio facades, it's doubtful that any part of the original house still exists, it's basically nothing but a recreation (Although it's definitely possible that it was still mostly original for parts 2 + 3. Part 4 was filmed in Universal Florida using a different facade. You can tell the difference easily by the windows on the "tower". In the original design, the windows extended all the way down to the top of the porch roof, the Florida version windows stopped a couple feet short. Plus all the windows are slightly undersized , and the ones on the second floor are set a foot and a half too high.

Sam Loomis didn't die for you to do this with his child, ma'am! And the plan was so stupid. Why not send Mary there, Mary shoots him, dresses him as Mother, tells everyone he went crazy again and tried to kill her, boom. done. The gaslight-until-he-relapses thing is diabolical! Anyway, Anthony Perkins was amazing in this.

Thanks for reacting to this classic!! Most reactors don't do this after the original. I was a bit gutted and amazed you kept palming everything off as a 'hallucination' and that Norman was killing people - he only killed the old bag at the end after he'd went mental again. Dr. Raymond phoned Norman from the motel parlour (which is 5 seconds away from the house) so its totally feasible that he got up to the house in time. He used the back stairs (shown several times in the film) to get up to the first floor and sneak up on Mary. I'd love you to do 'Psycho III' if you can. By the way, it is 'Toasted cheese sandwich' not 'Grilled'. Who puts a sandwich under a grill? You put it in a Brevil or sandwich toaster to make a toasted cheeese sandwich lol.

It's insane how history can influence movies too. If it weren't for Reagan's policies on the field of psychiatry, Norman would have had a better support system and therefore not go insane again.

PSYCHO II is better than the original its how a sequel SHOULD BE...the old woman at the end did the killings there's nothing to be confused about..she killed them all because she was protecting Norman....

Speaking of Phantom of the Opera, you should watch Dario Argento's "Opera"!!

Even as a kid I thought making sequels to Psycho was sacrilege so I never watched them, which was totally the wrong choice. Underrated series, especially 3 when Anthony Perkins directed and decided to go Camp with it.

I enjoyed this movie though I was bummed that in the end Norman kills again. Contrary to what is said at the beginning, our justice system treats most people convicted of crimes horribly and uses victims’ rights arguments as an excuse to serve unnecessarily harsh sentences. :(

Hello, Nick! You are my favourite reactor and I recommend you Quills to watch. It is based on the story of Marquis de Sade and I suggest you to read some information about him before starting the movie. There is also a song inspired by him, named Sadeness, by Enigma. You should check it out because it has a bigger impact on you if you know the story behind it.(the slowed version is very good as well)
