Psychologist Reacts to Saga of Tanya the Evil Episode 1 

This series gonna be a real deal in terms of psychology. There are a lot of deep psychological things happening in this show.

I like how he didn't know that tanya wasn't even a pre-teen

I freaking love this series. It has one of my all time favorite one-liners, as well as one of my all time favorite character names. That, and I love the VA work Aoi Yuki did with Tanya.

Oh, Tanya has a lot of emotional/pysch baggage to deal with. Tanya's backstory? Episode 2 "Looks like I'm up, hold my beer". Tanya has all the advantages in aerial combat, she's a small target, lighter weight so the equipment makes her faster and can go higher and then she's a powerful mage so that increases the equipment output. Everything Tanya does is to wrangle a promotion to a cushy job in the rear, she just does too good of a job in the front lines.

I wish the anime didn't exagerate Tanya's personality to make it seem like she's a psycopath, How she's presented in the second half of the anime and in the movie is more in line to the source material. it's espassaly bad with ep1 ending(which was anime filler) goes out of it's way to paint Tanya with Psychotic tendencies even making do something that's out of character, i.e killing her own soilders outside of military regalations or smiling at her fellow comrads' deaths. She would send people to a pill box as a punishment and would figure the would have a higher chance of death, because stationary object, then a person in the trenches but she wouldn't smile over it.

Actual history? At 12 eventual Admiral Faragut was commanding a ship in war during the War of 1812, admittedly as an Ensign commanding a captured prize ship...but he was also technically on his 4th year of service at that point, and chosen over other, older officers because he was both more senior in years in service...and had a better record. At 12. There's other examples of 'wait a minute' ages if you go through the history books, too, though that's one of the lowest with major accomplishments. Admittedly in the pre-modern era you have things like Gustav Adolph leading armies at 16, but that's a case of nobility and its own complications.

In manga men around Tanya were constantly ashamed that such little girl was so patriotic and self-sacrificial that they were boosting their own morale and determination. Also after manga I constantly regret that they decided to uglify so many characters, especially Serebryakova(I think she even could become seasonal waifu)

The "I would try to get off the frontlines and live a comfortable life." sentiment from the initial assessment made me laugh.

So glad to see you did this show. I just finished it and am doing the review round now. This was a surprise gem for me. Did not expect anything that good, I was just bored and looking for something to mindlessly drool at while I fall asleep..... Next thing you know, It's 2 AM, I'm at episode 8 and annoyed that I need to sleep... pesky human needs always getting in the way of good binge.

This is their world's first world war, and just like in our WW1, there aren't any good guys. That being said, the Empire is in a way the "good guys," because they are the ones who are attacked and declared war on and who are defending against foreign aggressors. The anime is so confusing, because they took material from quite a bit further into the story and pulled it forward to make into episode 1. Apparently they thought that the actual start of the story didn't have enough action to draw in the target audience, either willing to take the confusion as the price, or maybe even thinking the confusion serves as a hook... Getting the rebellious subordinates killed isn't evil by the way (despite what the anime-exclusive grin might suggest). By the rules of their military, Tanya should have executed them on the spot, or put in front of the war tribunal, that would have ended with their execution anyway. By arranging for them to be killed by the enemy, she gave them an "honorable" death, which means a posthumous 2-rank promotion and the according financial and reputational benefits for their families, instead of being branded as traitors and their families getting nothing, except scorn from the more patriotic elements of their neighborhood.

Pretty late but I don't know if anyone said this already but she's basically using magic meth in battle that's why she becomes so euphoric

10:55 like seriously. In war there are no persay good guys. Only the winner and the loser. Who afterwards bend the truth so they look like the good , saintlike guys. Especily in a WW scenario

The Nazis were heavily invested in Occult research prior to the second world War. You could say this alternate world focuses on a story line where their occult research succeeds. Magic is very new in in this world much like how many technologies at the outbreak of the second world war were in their infancy and hadn't been fully adapted or put to use by all sides. This is a great series that touches on this concept.
