My video summed up in one sentence : bruh it’s 2022. STOP joking about mental illness.
Also don’t mind if this was kinda raw and unorganised. I watched the movie and reviewed it without actually making a script cause I wanted it to have a natural flow. This is me talking about it as if I would to a friend.
Btw, I read this article before making this video and picked up some the points from it cause I really resonated with them and felt the same way while watching it - theswaddle.com...

Okay so there is this movie Split... and it stars James McAvoy.. and its about split personality disorder and I loved the acting and it was an amazing experience. That being said.. I am not sure whether the mental health aspect of the movie was depicted in a healthy and ethical manner. So will you please watch and review it? Thanks a lot

The movie never claimed schizophrenia. The little girl had trauma related psychosis. The last scene was like hypnotherapy where the therapist brings you back to your childhood…and you realize why you were traumatized. You are totally right about the psychiatrist friend. He was a waste of space.
@noiya.r.n
@noiya.r.n 2 года назад
But there is no evidence that patients who have trauma-related disorders experience psychosis or hallucinations that directly invoke their trauma as was portrayed in the film-research has only showed that people with comorbid trauma-related disorders (e.g., PTSD) and psychotic disorders (e.g., schizophrenia) may have some psychotic symptoms associated with the the trauma, such as paranoid delusions about people’s intentions or hearing voices that support those delusions. A common symptom of PTSD OR C-PTSD is intrusive memories (flashbacks, nightmares, etc.), but this is nothing like a hallucination.
@ABhattacharya
@ABhattacharya 2 года назад
@@noiya.r.n Yes, I concur. In PTSD one has flashbacks, but not hallucination. Here the protagonist was definitely psychotic as she wasn't imagining but visualizing. I say it is not Schizophrenia because that is not trauma related- it is organic. This disorder definitely does not exist in the DSW-however it is closer to PTSD, in how it is induced and appears to be Schizophrenia in how the patient is experiencing it.
@noiya.r.n
@noiya.r.n 2 года назад
@@ABhattacharya I understand what you mean-I’m sure there have been cases where people with complex PTSD experience psychotic symptoms that do not constitute another diagnosis. But the hallucinations in this movie are also very unrealistic, among other aspects of mental health portrayed… I feel like most of this could have been remedied with a basic internet search, but I guess that would ruin the weird premise behind this film. I would have been way more receptive if Rinku had dissociative identity disorder and they portrayed her as having an alternate child identity, for example-at least that is still considered in the realm of possibility for a trauma-related mental disorder and could have made for a really captivating story.

The best friend’s character was THE MOST problematic aspect of the film. And we’re talking about a film that had many such plot/loop holes. I’m not a psychologist/psychiatrist, yet the film just boiled my blood to the core. Have huge respect for Anand. L. Rai and team for investing so much into their films, but the slightest level of sensitivity is what the film lacked.

But this is not really a movie about mental illness. I think it depicts the reality of the society today. People do make a joke out of mental illness. People do trivialise mental illness. For me, I did not take any offence in the fun making because it's what is happening. But the main characters being doctors and doing all these funny things is a bit illogical. Some movies depict reality, some movies exaggerate because that's what movies do. What is influential from a movie is really not clear. I think you're offended perhaps because you're a psychologist. And sure, that makes sense and that's okay.

Completely agree with your point. Movies create influence and that is how people perceive it in real life. Mental condition is not a joke and shouldn't be treated as one. The portrayal was definitely wrong but I think people should be smart enough to see that rather than foolishly believing in whatever is being catered to them. I believe its the illiterate and unintelligent people who will get influenced by this not the smart ones. The film however was very good and like I said it should be treated as a film rather than trying to derive a moral story out of it. Just for fun and entertainment.

I completely agree with the fact that the movie didn't throw proper light on mental illness but should that be the main sole reason to dismiss the movie on a whole? And also, when did we decide to make movies as advertiser of mental illness awareness, shouldn't the awareness start in our education system? Yes I do agree there are better movies that talk about mental illness like a beautiful mind, silver linings playbook, etc. but atrangi re comes no where close to being a film that talks about mental illness in the first place because that wasn't the creators intension or vision from the very beginning. You can criticize the film for it's portrayal of mental illness but you cannot dismiss the fact that this movie is really really good. You have your opinions and I have mine and although I agree with you on most of the things you have said in this video, I still stand by the fact that dismissing this film and hating it is just not fair. I understand what you mean and it's entertaining for the dramatic element it has for most of the target audience who just watch the movie for fun and nothing supposedly educational. So yes, it's not a movie about mental illness awareness. However, while the plot is mainly focused on the nature of a mentally ill character and how they effectively "treat" it, don't you agree that as makers of the film, it bestows a sense of ethical responsibility to have factual accuracy? In India, Bollywood has a very great influence on views and opinions of people. It's not a demand for making it about mental illness awareness but when you do bring in a sensitive topic such as this, it's rather a basic expectation to not cause damage the lives of the affected people and the efforts of people trying to make the gravely needed betterment in the area. Sure this isn't what occurs to people who are just enjoying the show and find this to sound like salty nitpicking by professionals, I guess. But if you sometime happen to visit an institution that deals with mental illnesses or people that either have their loved ones or themselves going through this and realise the influence these things can have on people, I'm confident you'd find what is being said more agreeable. It's natural for the general audience to easily ignore all the inaccuracies and that's not objectively wrong on the viewers part to think they're harmless. But as a movie maker, these faults are not really inexcusable.

I agree with what you said. I think its important to take medicine for that person to feel better, not for the comfort of those around them. The movie gives off the message that people with mental ilness annoy, bother the people around, which is humanly wrong. Another thing is that taking medication comes with side effects, which for me were horrible and now I feel like a different person and it is not nice. (I used to take antipsyhotics. I tried different ones, but I decided to go off them) And bruh, if you expect me to take pills for you, I am mad. Another thing I am angry about is when everyone with mental ilness was put in the same box, saying they can see the hallucination. Maybe I am going too far, but it kinda feeds her psychosis. This doesn t go only for this movie, but I absolutely hate it, when people romanticize mental ilness. For example, depression. It s not only being sad(don t get me started on people saying that depression is just saddness), insomnia, sh. It s also smelling bad because you haven t had a shower in weeks, missing deadlines, failing exams, being fired, looking bad(please, not the mascara tears), older than you actually are, but we don t see these in movies, because it isn t fancy and cute, is it? (But, there are also people with high functioning depression) And guess what? Even if you show a little bit of this, there is also that person, who saves you and becomes your lover. I am sorry for people, who like 13 reasons why, but I don t see a personality trait, besides her disorder, depression. (From what I remember, there is someone that likes the main character. I understand that you want to help her, but love?) You just minimized her whole being to her mental ilness. Good job! Sorry for the long comment.

Your points are logical. I just watched this movie and then I came to see review for this movie. I feel the same as you said. and, at some points, their emotions and acting were okay and Dhanush especially has done a good job. however, this film has to be very serious entirely by not directing some mocking or funny scenes. I know that people should have at least little knowledge about mental health to understand this movie otherwise some people will take it in another direction. and I am saying this coz, I have also gone through a serious mental illness and I am still healing from that. and as a patient, I understand the importance of the main character "Rinku". I cried a lot while watching it, I mean I couldn't stop my tears 'cause I am relating the character of Rinku. anyway, this movie would be something else if it was directed in a more serious way like you said. thank you for this video and god bless you all.❣❤❣

I think it’s not schizophrenia, could be a rare manifestation of PTSD or (I forgot the exact term for this but I remember that it’s seen in kids with unstable and abusive households where they create an imaginary world or an imaginary friend; it’s been more than a year since I’ve read psychiatry 🤭)… I agree with you on using terms like “pagal” and other derogatory terms to describe Rinku’s condition. As a doctor, I feel like they should have just hired a psychiatrist while writing the script but as an avid cinema lover, I think the movie is good, it made me cry at a lot of instances and I had a smile on my face in the climax. The title atrangi re was being referred to the story, as told by the actors in the promotions.

So as per what I've studied as a Clinical Psychologist, when we talk about positive symptoms (anything that's an abnormal addition - hallucinations / delusions), it stops being just about PTSD or imaginary friends because it hampers their daily life. Delusions and / or hallucinations (along with a few more symptoms but majorly these) are enough to get you a diagnosis of psychosis, schizophreniform disorder, or Schizophrenia, depending upon the duration of the symptoms 😅

That friend and psychiatrist enraged me SO MUCH. I get your being concerned about your friend, but don't you have any ethics as a mental health professional, as a medical professional. Especially the scene where he casually says the auditorium is filled with patients having OCD, Schizophrenia so they will see whatever Sara wants to show... like whaaaaaaaaaaaat? First, it is so unethical to pull a stunt like this in a hospital/medical college/anywhere, that too with no supervision of seniors, second, since when did OCD have hallucinations as symptoms, third, just because 2 people have schizophrenia doesn't mean they are going to indulge in each others' psychosis/hallucinations. Not getting accuracy on portraying mental illness is still debatable/forgivable, but at least get one correct in the entire thing.

However, how she's not even taking Dhanush's name says a lot about her own taste in movies and actors. You don't disrespect Dhanush..nope!

I have not seen the Maps. This movie is not about Maps. It is for entertainment. Nothing more and nothing less. If you look for a primer on mental illnesses, you will be disappointed. You are looking at the wrong place. The husband : Seeing his just born girl child. To wife "You say, she looks exactly like me. but I see no similarity. Tamasha was a movie dealing with insecurity and borderline personality disorder and I guess bipolar disorder too. It did tried to show a deeper and realistic portrayal of the circumstances, mental state of a person going through it. But it flopped bcs it too complex for most of the audience understanding. I feel if Atrengi Re went deep audience out right rejected it. Mental illness is a complex issue and needs to be understood thoroughly so that u can portray it in such a way everyone can understand it. I guess the maker's themselves didn't understood what they were dealing with hence they choose to keep it like typical bollywood rom story.

as a someone who is very interested in cinema and wants to pursue it as a career...i loved the movie....and i sat here to watch this with a very salty mood preparing all hate comments before even actually watching it....but honestly i kinda do agree with you...they really did cause more harm than good and they never countered the taboo...it was more like "promoting paagalpan" and making mental illness a funnily weird of some sort...the movie was entertaining no doubt the actors were fab but they failed to make the point they were trying to...makers really could've done a better job and that doctor character was very genuinely shit...with that doctor they have delivered the message that all psychiatrists are frauds and people will become more scared them...

Iam a doctor and trust me i honestly hated how mental health and it's treatment was shown . It did entertained me but i second u . Thats absolutely not how it works. The psychiatrist friend was a shame . Thats not how it works. This movie definately doesn't claim to be an ambassador which educates about mental health but since it will reach mass audience and people's minds are way more impressionable than many claim it to be also this may be the only medium which may have exposed them to mental illness related issue therefore it definitely raises eyebrows. See mental health is deeply misunderstood in society and let's break our privileged bubble and realise that bollywood and regional cinema still is major source of entertainment and knowledge to many people across country and a movie likes this is will act as an information primer about mental health and it's treatment and misinformation can be extremely fatal and we don't wish to experience blunders it can create . I have seen some cases of pseudoscience and misinformation getting diagnosed when it's too late . We educated and privileged section of society may just take it with pinch of salt because we are preconditioned to recheck facts on books and internet but it will not cross minds of many people . I absolutely enjoyed the movie but they could have best of all worlds if they would have had self educated themself about these things and then write this movie . It could have atleast been more right or educational and still entertaining. Educational movie can we very entertaining as well

Okay. There are many things said here in the review that are correct medically about mental illness but you can’t expect a movie to be 100% medical ethically! It’s just a movie at the end of the day…

I never see them mocking serious physical ailments like cancer. But they always mock mental illness. Also why can’t I expect better research? If I find something wrong, I will give my opinion. They don’t need to follow it but at least my viewers will not let it influence them.

@@awkwardgoat3 You are correct. I am not denying that at all. Ofcourse I came to watch your review because I was expecting some substance. I just wondered how much we can expect from Bollywood - or are we expecting from wrong folks? Perhaps more education of these issues is really needed to change people’s perception overall. Was talking in broader terms about this just being a movie. Not that I don’t agree with you.

If we are looking for a social change towards Mental illnesses then we mental health professionals have to rethink about our role as professionals, are we merely gonna sit and make instagram videos or RU-vid videos (that too only for elite classes) or we have to go out real in grassroots, meet with public officials , lobbying for rights of persons with mental illness. This is a broader problem which needs grassroots interventions. We cant expect it from movies only.

Waste video by so called intellectual girl... I really don't know that how today's educated class see outter things? The movie is based on multiple aspects not only mental illness of a girl. And all these facts copied by some articles or books won't help the core audience of India. It's a movie to give some sort of message to society so please take it in that way... This girl is considering a movie as a psychological patient's biography for medical students. The movie is awesome by the way...

It is a problematic film, very bad for those who don't know alot about mental illness but it was a light heart watch.... A one time watch maybe... I think it does put forth a little bit on suppressed trauma and on the fact that suppressed trauma can come out in very strange and unexpected ways and does not just psychosomaticly impair an individual.
