A panel discussion with a psychologist, architect, and interior designer on recent exploratory research in environmental psychology. Experiences happen in spaces; can the space shape the experience? How can we design spaces that encourage healing, learning, and productivity? Dr. Sam Gosling, with the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin in collaboration with Joel Anderson, Architect and Principal, and Stacey Speck at Cushing Terrell, a multi-disciplinary design firm, along with Tamie Glass, Austin based interior designer and UT professor, discuss their research to better understand emotions people value in different spaces of the built environment. This research focuses on common areas in offices, health care facilities, education, and retail spaces.#DesignPsychology

I like it. For me, the purpose of the building is to serve the needs of the occupants of that building in such a way that they fulfill the purpose of the building. For example: a church is a place of worship. That is its purpose and intent. That said, it is the people occupying the church that are doing the worship NOT the building. Thus to fulfill the purpose of the building, the designer must design the church in such a way as to facilitate the psychological worship experience of the people visiting the church. The same can be said for any building or any part of any building. That is architectural design.

This video and, more broadly, the subject matter has so few viewers. The failure of design psychology to get its deserved attention is manifest in our cities and in the everyday things we use.

its absence is seen in every failed architecture structure.

@@dhungryarchitect I have noticed and given long thoughts about that. Certain spaces and materials used in construction make me feel like wanting to leave fast whereas others make me want to stay and touch them. It is worth trying to understand the process involved.

spatial psychology should be in every architecture academe and course, rather than put it in the category of theories.

What was Dr Sam Gosling talking about with the application of psychology to social housing being a failure?

Hi Rosina. Look up Pruitt-Igoe Apartments. It might be a good starting point!

@@arc-psy6091 I am from Europe and just googled that and man oh man, The whole eastern block of Europe looks like that. Millions of people here are living in cities that look exactly like this. And then you can wonder where all the depression of society here comes from. I hate the previous (communistic) regime for that soooo much.

Modern architecture is at its best when the last piece of concrete is carted away after it has been demolished.

Architecture today is making people depressed. Especially our dictated future of the ugly dystopian future of architecture. All buildings look ugly today and in the future unfortunately becuase that is the trend.
