A good number of psychology classes are very biology / chemistry based, lots of anatomy. Even med schools will count a good number of psych classes as bio/science classes.
For sure, neuroscience would also fit more in the category of a science course but yes depending on what school you go to, the psychology major may have a decent amount of science courses as well

I’m not studying to be a doctor but I’m studying to be a nurse. I’ve been thinking about what I may like to pick as a speciality and I think I’m going to pick neurology. I’ve always been interested in psychology but I don’t wanna be a full psych nurse and psychology and neuroscience overlap a lot. A lot of mental disorders happen because of neurological problems. So they go hand and hand most times. I think the brain is extremely fascinating. The simplest change or injury can effect us in such a negative way. It would be interesting to work with people with brain injuries/trauma. People who suffer from strokes, seizures, Alzheimer’s, mental disorders, epilepsy ect…
Currently I am doing my psychology bachelor, which is very science based (biopsychology, medicine, pharmacology, statistics etc.). After that I will do Neuroscience in my Master. Maybe also computational neuroscience. I am really only doing psychology in my bachleor because, I love neuroscience and its the most direct way (at least here in Germany there are no good bachelorprograms for neuroscience).
@@dr.willisofficial8041 First I wanted to become a professor. So the topic is pretty irrelevant for that. But I learned that becoming a professor usually means earning nothing for most of your life, till you maybe are lucky enough to get an average-decent paid job. That's why I wanted to have more of comp. focus, which opens more possibilities than just Neuroscience or psychology in the free market. I thought about the direction of machine learning or Ai, but also data science which has a great future, but I am not 100% sure, what exactly I want to do. I just think that this area offers many great possibilities and If everything goes wrong I always could just work as a research scientist.

What about studying psychology and neuroscience? How would that turn out? Is it good to major in that without knowing what I'm going to be in the future? But overall neuroscience and psychology are very interesting to me.
I've heard of people majoring in neuroscience and minoring in psychology or vice versa. If you like the hard sciences but want to focus on psychology as well that might be an option. I think the hardest thing about choosing a psych major or neuroscience major is that you should know what you want to do before choosing the degree, because there may be limited career options if you don't know what you want to do. I am still in the process of deciding between psychology and neuroscience for my undergrad. Now I like psych because of the theories and how much more versatile it seems to be in terms of jobs, because it doesn't restrict you as much. However at the same time I feel like neuro is more facts based, and would give me a better grounding and understanding of the brain, which might make it more advantageous? Correct me if wrong but I think neuro is more in depth because of its strict biological focus as opposed to psychology which is broader and looks at things from different lenses, i.e contexts such as social, behavioural, etc. Saying that, I am not too sure about what my career would be in either field. The thing you mentioned about psychometrician seemed like something I'd be interested in, will do more research into that. That's awesome! And yeah sometimes there's no right answer. I've had people do a major in one and a minor in another to kind of get the best of both. Yeah I think neuroscience or maybe even biochemistry is a great place to start when wanting to understand psychedelic assisted therapy. Neuroscience might be the best blend of hard sciences along with some social and therapeutic knowledge of human behavior. Hope that helps!

But I love neuroscience so I am planning on getting a minor in Behavioral Cognitive Neurosciences. My biggest issue right now is exposure to what fields/jobs exist within these designations. I just applied as a neuroscience major on the premed track - however, my university makes it incredibly difficult to achieve a BS in neuroscience, with 120 hours of requisites. This will make it very hard to achieve the pre med requisites on top of volunteering, shadowing, and possibly working/an internship. This is making me lean towards getting an easier psych degree (people say that psych classes are easy at this school) but I feel like med schools will look down upon a psych degree as it is more common and less respected. Also if for whatever reason I am not accepted into med school, I am stuck with a useless degree. As a former neuroscience student, how possible do you think it is to do Neuroscience + premed? Or should I opt for an alternative such as healthcare information management + premed?
Yeah great question! The neuroscience major at my school overlapped a lot with premed so it wasn't bad but I understand for some other schools there won't be very much overlap. Honestly I think whatever you major in, as long as you have good grades and do well on the MCAT, as well as the other courses for pre med you should be ok. I know a lot of students who majored in english, sociology, (maybe easier majors) but absolutely killed it when it came to taking prerequisite courses for applying to med school so even though they had an easier major they still did well on their science courses. I think that's the most important thing. As long as you major in something you like and you do well on the premed courses (science courses like chemistry, biology, microbiology) that's more important than finding a major that you think med schools will prefer. Hi, Phil! This was super duper helpful. Seems like neuroscience is the right fit but I’m still in a bit of a dilemma. I love learning science, but I always find myself struggle with lab work. I’m a clumsy person by nature. 😂 so for my career, while I really enjoy the theoretical and analytical aspects of science, I want to apply that to studying people’s behaviors and communities - rather than being stuck in the lab. Can a neuroscience major go into that sort of work?
To me that sounds very applicable for a neuroscience major! You might be able to get in contact with those careers that you can see yourself in and people who are in those fields to see what they majored or what steps they took to get there. Hope that's helpful!

cognitive neuroscience is great if you want to become a neuropsychologist or a neuroscientist. If you want to be a therapist or a consultant any psychology degree will be helpful I think as well. Neuroscience degrees has a bit more chemistry, biochemistry involved depending on where you take it, but I've had many people say they really liked it even though it was challenging at times. Options are endless! If you know what you want to do for your career perhaps you can reach out to a professional and ask them what they majored in, best of luck!
Hi this video was really helpful. But I do have a question. What would a BS look like for psych? If I would want to be a licensed therapist but also still want to do neuroscience as well? Can you still be a therapist if you do a BS in psych rather than BA? I am interested in psychology and neuroscience. (Leaning towards majoring in psych and minoring in neuro or even double majoring) but my end goal is just blurry. I would love to be a mental health therapist but I’m also interested in research. For example researching brains and giving out psychological assessments which you stated in the video. ( dont think I wanna go on the pre med track tho)
Most programs will either accept a BS in psych or BA. At least in the U.S typically as long as you fufill pre-req classes you can major in anything you like but you should check with the school that you apply to. BS typically has more science classes, sometimes students will do a neuroscience minor as well for more science classes, its up to you. Many mental health programs have a research focus that you could look into. Psychometricians are the ones that typically do assessments under the guidance and supervision of a psychologist. Theses jobs are available for students typically after college and some research experience.
There are many masters programs in neuroscience, I think depending on the program they may have different pre requisite courses they like prospective students to have. Depending on the program you want to go into, they might offer some guidance in how to get started. Best of luck!

I'm still in high school dont know much about this but am really intrested and want to study it in the future! I love psychology but am started to be intrested in neuroscience to, what jobs do neuroscience offer ? Like Can u study neuroscience but be a able to get a job in psychology? Good question, a lot of neuroscience jobs are in research, teaching, maybe some consulting. Neuroscience is more of a specialty focus from psychology so they both share a lot of the same jobs and research. Some people major in one, and minor in the other for college so you can study both if you wanted. Neuroscience is just more of the biological and physiological focus of emotions and behavior. You can either major in neuroscience or psychology, most programs don't have a preference, although majoring in neuroscience might set students up really well for neuroanatomy and other neuro courses they will take in grad school! The only thing about neuroscience is that in some schools its a lot harder than psychology and may be difficult to get good grades in some courses, so just a heads up about that. Prospective students should major in what they are interested in, but try and keep those grades up when it comes time for application season. Hope that helps!

Im an int'l student currently enrolled in BA psy/bio interdisciplinary but am looking to change majors cz yes bio is heavy for my everyday work-study-life schedule and i thought it i could do but pure bio i cant .. the BA interdisciplinary psy/neuro sounds more appealing than bio being more closer to psy.. I want to work with kids later on.. maybe as a child psychologist, kids on spectrum, speech pathology or just research... also i had physics/chem/math in high school but was never good at it and still scared of those.. i have a computers degree also.. would you mind giving your input if it'll be worth a shot OR not get overexcited and stick to BA psy.. !? Getting into a psychometrician job is a great way to work with neuropsychologists because you learn about the testing and assessments that they give, and it also looks great on a resume when you apply for grad school!

Hello, great question. If you want to be a neuroscientist you'd have to look at specific neuropsychology phd programs. Neuroscientists are different than psychologists so the programs are different and they do different things. If neuroscience is more of your interest you'd most likely be doing more research on the brain/possibly teaching and not clinical therapy/treatment. Some programs may require you to take additional courses in order to apply and some may not require it so it depends on which programs you choose to apply to. Best of luck!

Depending on where you live, I've heard of people graduating from undergrad with a degree in psychology and applying to get a masters in neuroscience. The two majors aren't too far off, especially with a minor in biology. You might ask the schools you're interested in about a masters in neuroscience with what you have so far and that might help guide you on perhaps what specific courses to take if they want you to get a certain amount of science courses
I’m so interested in both! I studied psychology for my undergrad and fell in love with the neuroscience courses I took and I’m working in a behavioral neuroscience lab now. I have been for about a year. It’s making me want to pursue a phd in neuroscience rather than clinical psych because it gives me the option to be a psychologist or a neuroscientist. Could you help me with a few differences between B.A. in neuroscience vs psychology. I think they are very similar and I don't see the differences (B.A. in neuros vs psy). I think Humanities and social topics are where I am headed. Will this pathway get me there? I am not sure if premed or research is for me.
Really great question. I have to be honest I'm not too sure about the differences between the B.A. in Neuroscience, I wasn't sure there even was one. I think like you suggested they are very similar perhaps to psychology. From what I've seen of working professionals, it may not be the major that is the most important but the relevant work experiences, internships, and job opportunities outside of school that will help immensely. Working backwards and finding someone who is doing what you want to do in the future and seeing what they majored in or what helped them get to their stage in their career has been helpful for me.

That's a really good question. Most colleges have a major dedicated to neuroscience, so whatever courses are included in that major, a student will take those courses. Both medical students and psychology students can major in neuroscience. Sometimes schools have department focused in "pre-med" or "pre-psych" which is just courses like biology, chemistry, psychology, and neuroscience that students take to prepare for grad school. The path to become a neurologist is different than a psychologist. Usually it means going into med school first after receiving a bachelors degree, then doing 3-5 year residency after med school. Neurologists work with the physiology of the brain, they can prescribe medications and treat diseases. If someone wanted to be both a neurologist and a psychologist they could theoretically do 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of med school, 3-5 years of a neurology residency, and then 5-6 years of a PhD in clinical psychology. But that would be about 16 years of school after high school. Usually people pick one or the other since there are different education paths. I hope that helps!

I think if I understand your question, people can usually major in what they are interested in, but they will most likely have to fulfill the requirements of the program that apply to. So most programs will have necessary courses that all students have to take before being admitted to their program.

I think avg with a college degree in psychology or neuroscience students may expect 30-50,000, but it widely depends on location, specialty, and further education and certifications as well as long-term experience

It would depend on the program. Most clinical psychology programs require prospective students to have taken basic level psychology courses. I believe masters programs are similar.
