This 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix V6, towed in from 4 hours away, has been around the block a few times and has 325k miles on the odometer!
Owner says that for over a YEAR he has been trying to figure out a persistent 5V Reference and MAP sensor Circuit faults.
Car has a Long Crank Time, Runs Rough, Hesitates, and Idles at 2000rpm!
He has replaced EVERYTHING under the hood including the PCM, tried some wiring modifications, and finally threw in the towel.
There are FOUR different MAP sensors in the "spare parts" box, among many other things.
Let's dive into the "Parts Cannon Pontiac" and follow a logical approach to see what's going on with this 5V Reference Circuit and the MAP sensor.
Can we get it back on the road with NO PARTS REQUIRED?
Place your bets now!

Ugh! I put a Flagship 1 ECM in a GM over the Summer for an A/C problem. It cured that problem but it killed the alternator. That ECM is still sitting in the top of my toolbox. I won't use them anymore. My kid's girlfriend headed for town in her 3.0 DOHC Taurus Tuesday and being out of oil, it jumped time and, well, it's toast. I found a 1998 Corolla with 196k on it for cheap. I plugged the scanner in and it only had 3 modules. 0.0 No codes. Runs like a top, shifts great, drives good, and even has working A/C. It got 4 new skins yesterday and this coming week it gets new fenders on the front. Thanks Ivan. I needed a good episode this morning. Makes my coffee so much better. ;)

25 years ago soldering wiring on a car could be a pain, extension cords lousy irons etc. Let's face it, some people don't know how to solder properly. Today with all the wonderful cordless options it truly is the best option and there's no excuse to not learn.

Lol I wish I could time travel to the 90s or something and just hand someone our modern tools, like that soldering iron. They'd be speechless 😂

This is scary. After Ivan ran down the list of conditions, I thought the 5V reference is shorted to ground. I'm not smart or experienced enough to do this work. Head full!

Great video Ivan. Makes me miss my 96' Baretta. That had to have the EGR replaced. I think there may be a wire rubbing somewhere intermittently. Looking forward to part two.

@reneneron2971 15 минут назад
The EGR bypass is useful as a diagnostic, but the ECU is expecting the exhaust gas as a diluent, so it will impact fuel trims. Depending on the engine, some determine if the RHR valve is flowing properly by measuring temperature downstream of the EGR valve. If low, it will also trip the CEL.

The MAP is right there by the coil pack Ivan. I have a 2000 Impala with the 3.4. Same shit. I have replaced so many intake gaskets on these things I can do them in the dark with my eyes shut.

My problem with the Launch scan tools (the ones I used) it has no vehicle history! You can save a report but it doesn't auto save any vehicle history of the cars that you connect. I can't find it. No history is a major annoyance.

I had a 1991 Chevy cavalier in the shop the other day. Intermittent stalling turned out to be a TCC SOLENOID. With a 3.1 v6

Pardon my look of mild amazement that a '91 Cavalier would still be out there hoofin around w/325k on the clock.

You're right. You can't get a crimper in there. That's why the proper repair is to pull it apart, run a new wire, and crimp a new pin :-)

Those eBay MAP sensors are a joke. I fitted a 3 bar one to my turbocharged vehicle (not to the ECU, just for secondary monitoring) and the boost pressure blew the sensor apart. The insides were the cheapest crap. Hot glue and a non automotive rated PCB and sensor.

Pretty much all unbranded eBay/Amazon sensors are a joke tbh.

I am pretty sure that engine is a 60° Chevrolet V6 engine so it's different to the 3.8 litre Buick V6 engine which has a 90° V configuration !

Hey Ivan one thing you want to also check is directly under the power steering pump there's a cam positioning sensor there it has a bunch of wires going to it be sure to look at it i've seen get bare wires. PS GM wiring harness ain't all that much better it really depends on the environment It is stored in but generally most engine bay wiring harness would disintegrate because of heat I know I just rebuilt my entire 1988 C2500 Wring harnessed from head to toe 🤣🤣 as I'm doing LS swap

Hi Ivan, I was hoping you might have had an easy one finding the EGR valve pulling down the 5V reference. The customer mentioned Rock Auto as where he purchased some of the sensors. What's your opinion on the sensors supplied by them. I had to replace an O2 sensor on my 2006 Toyota Sienna van and bought a Bosch from them since that was the OE brand and the van has been running fine with 135k on the odometer. You and Amanda stay safe.

10.26.24. The lower intake manifold gaskets had to of been changed on that car! The original plastic framed ones would’ve never lasted that long. They had to of been changed out with the metal framed kind. 💁🏻‍♂️The Dex cool™️ was not kind to the plastic framed ones.

summary 1) what's not working? 2) research/read/learn system(s)!!!!!!!! 3) explore what's COMMON between problems. (Is generally true that there's only ONE defect. This is NOT 100% but is likely 80-95% true.) ((Multiple failures ==> power or ground or ecm)) 4) with sensors there's five suspect elements a) power b) ground c) signal d) sensor e) ecm 5) check the above with emphasis on COMMON failures = associated defects. 6) VERIFY success = run full monitors.

Why do these people throw parts cannon at such expensive parts I don't get it like an ECM that must cost 5 to 600 euro I'd say you would definitely have your car fully diagnosed and back on the road at a professional mechanic shop for less
