As soon as you lifted the box up I noticed the latch wasn't snapped/locked in place and was saying, "I'll bet that's the issue".. lol. I can't believe the shop missed it.
I saw that connector not fully seated and the noticed your video was only ten minutes long. That was confirmation of the problem. The TIPM is right in front of the battery. It was probably just nudged during battery installation and the unlatched connector wiggled loose.
At 4:05, to the right of the TIPM is the air filter housing. Perhaps when the owner changed the filter and reconnected the clips to hold the housing top, an arm rubbed against the connector lock-down latch.
Another fault that appears after an unrelated action. I though "there goes another TIPM", but the real culprit was briefly visible at 4:36. Great catch, Ivan! Scope was fundamental, again!
You convinced me long ago the necessity of a scope in these situations and I am very close to that point right now on a no com situation, without a scope. For some reason I also seem to have a no com situation with Mitchell (invalid info) I have to resolve first for the mapping schematics. If after I get that sorted and find nothing obvious, I know a guy that will be getting an email.👍👍🇺🇸
This week I had a 2008 RHD Wrangler with the wipers going slowly and rear Washer Pump constantly on and Side Lights on! No TIPM faults, communicate with it no problem, tested wiper and Indicator switches, sees all Inputs correctly and work properly when switched on! Initially the main Battery cable was wiggled and everything briefly stopped! Cleaned up all Battery and Earth connections, fault still there! So Faulty TIPM. Had quite a few go belly up on various models before! Caravans, Calibers etc!
From the first moment you showed the TIPM I noticed the unlatched connector but assumed you had done it. It seems strange that someone could accidentally leave that unlatched, but I have underestimated people before!
2:53 When I heard CAN bus, the first thing I thought of was ohming out pins 6 and 14 of the OBD2 DLC; however, the CAN IHS is not connected to the DLC, so I would been wrong.
I have the same problem intermittently in the same 2010 jeep. Even the color is the same, had it from new. I had the RER radio with XM but it died a while ago. I replaced it with an Android radio plus an adaptor module for CAN/audio amp signal conversion. I had this intermittent communication symptom that you are showing for years now. I never found the actual cause. But, when it happens (2-3 times a year) I unplug and reinsert the main connector on the back of the radio. I got used to doing this while driving.
Had an 05 caravan that the locks would stop working. If I let it go it would creep to the rear doors and a couple other things. Pull the IOC fuse, wait 10 sec and put it back. Everything worked.
this is actually similar to the problem I had that got me watching your channel in the first place. except I figured it out right away except for the one that took out the alternators; the "tech" had installed the new battery literally backwards because the one that was in it was 180ed to get the cables to fit better. it was raining, and I didn't wanna put the new batt in myself in case I did the same thing.
That TIPM is a stupid design that the release on the connector isn't protected by that side plastic piece. Also the release should be facing the other way so stuff like this doesn't happen. What a funny fix. Good stuff Ivan!
When you lifted up the TIPM at 4:36 in the video I could clearly see a connector was unlatched, didn't know which one it was, but it was obviously not connected properly.
6:55 you said it looked like a module problem. But I thought both signals being identical meant that there was a broken line between where the scope was tapped in and the sending module. The identical signal simply coming back around though the terminating resistor instead of flat-lining.
From your title, I said to myself before clicking on the video, I thought to myself: "of course he can fix it".o) Are Jeep TIPM's normally that loose, or was/is it "loosely mounted" for diag/repair access etc? Great work as always Ivan. That customer is going to be very very pleased.
Wipers playing up and the wiper connector being unlatched...surprised the first thought wasn't "someone's been here already and tried to fix this" rather than "this'll fix it".
Starting at 1:37 I was wondering how long it would take for you to acknowledge that open connector latch. The cost of the parts required for this repair = Free. The cost of the skilled labor to identify and fix the problem = whatever the current hourly labor rate is.
somebody was messing around with the jeep probably when the battery was going bad thought it had other issues maybe thought they plugged the connector back in it has happened to me before
You are by far the smartest auto tech I have seen here on YT, have just recently subscribed and watched half a dozen vids but you get things diagnosed working with perfect logic, and have a complete understanding of the systems you are checking. You also have excellent diagnostic systems and a flawless understanding of their use and working. That said I hope you are not afraid to charge fully for the work you do.., you are worth every penny and clearly are saving many of your clients a lot more than you cost had they gone elsewhere for help. (Repeated this comment to ensure you see it.., I and I am sure everyone else appreciates you!)
Good question. Esp. since it's from the "FCA" days (2010). Or as someone replied above, perhaps offroad shock/vibration. Most of those types of locks I've seen are pretty hard to shake the lock clip loose.
I don’t see any problem calling in a specialist. Like Ivan said, at least they didn’t start replacing stuff that didn’t need replacing. A new TIPM probably would’ve “fixed” it because they would’ve latched the connector after installation.
Haha, "no bus" is such a useless message to put on the dash for the typical vehicle owner. I can see younger me screaming at the car that I'll HAVE to take the bus if the car won't bloody work! XD
I have a 2012. Had an issue like this after installing a CB. Everytime I’d key the mic the wipers would turn on and every light on the cluster would come on for a few seconds. Never could find the cause. Ended having to remove the CB.
Poor quality coax, poor bonding between components on the vehicle, or just components that weren't designed with proper shielding. Sometimes adding a ferrite core on the right wire can help. But you need to know where it's going crazy. Might need an oscilloscope.
@@major__kong Yeah. I tried everything I could think of. Tried the ferrite cores....tried moving the ground. Eventually just yanked it out since I never really used it anyways.
repairing machine tools for over 40 years, checking connections and seeing if everything is properly seated is a basic check, could save days of trouble shooting
What bothered me was the one hour diagnostic and he was almost set to leave after not seeing the issue. My feeling is, if you’re charging me that hour, you best stay there for an hour and check things, like powers grounds, in-depth visual inspection, whatever, but charge an hour, spend an hour.
@@GNX157 what we as customers are paying for is the SKILL and EXPERIENCE. If you have a good mechanic and he finds the problems in 20 minutes than you pay the hour diag fee. Some people will never understand this. A lot of mechanics/shops will also allow part of the diag fee, if not all, to be credited to the repair itself. For example, they find your water pump is bad so if you have them replace the water pump they’ll take off the hour diag fee from the final bill. You’re ultimately paying for the mechanics experience and expertise when you have your car diagnosed.
@@GNX157 for intermittent problems, my rule is that the issue HAS to be reproduced before touching ANYTHING. Otherwise if you go on a wild goose chase, you might accidentally "fix" the problem without knowing or proving it! 😉
3:59 If the wiper arms snap down onto the windshield without blades on, that will crack the windshield. It would have been better to disconnect the wiper fuse or just let the wipers run dry. Cheaper to replace wipers than the whole windshield.
The old unplug and plug it back in job, knowing what connector is the trick for sure. Thanks for sharing, I definitely appreciate the jeep videos. Its great to bank some knowledge for when these issues pop up, especially in the middle of nowhere.
