Absolutely love the Kirby kits. I have a 500w rear hub diy kit and the install was pretty straight forward, had to test fit the wheel two or three times. I also ditched the bag and designed and 3d printed a bracket and integrated cable management box. I made a custom torque bracket from 4mm stainless steel. The 500w kit is all I ever need. Good power and pretty good range with the included battery 48v 13a. Nice instructions not many go into detail about the washers.👍

I like these videos. The everyday use approach (obviously you don't need everything in the kit, if you don't want to).. and the subtle humor and throughness. One thing I would've liked to see was the casette/freewheel installation, and probably some mention of the hub spacing on MTB's (depending on the type of dropout), what you can do and what you can't do. There's plenty of videos on the tube about changing freewheel/casette for sure, but not many doing it on a 2kW hub motor. I've got an MTB with QR dropouts and those only have 135mm spacing at the hub. It won't fit a motor like this and a 7 speed freewheel/casette I think.
@OddBallPerformance

Thank you for making this video. I have been thinking about building my own electric bike and most videos are more like paid promotions and don't have a lot of actual advice in them. I would make one suggestion on buying the caliper space to the motor. They sell brake disc shims to go behind the rotor in 1mm increments. Use a rotor shim, and then you can adjust the caliper on the mount as they usually have some side to side adjustability to keep the pads evenly spaced on each side.

@DudeStuff Buddy these three ebike build videos are just awesome and will save a lot of new ebike builders time without the frustrations and headaches. The information on removing the plastic spacer behind the disc brake is so helpful along with the washer spacings for the dropout. I can wait to try my installation again when I have the opportunity!

13:00 yes when the wires touch you are actually completing a circuit on the coils this is reason why you have resistance which is only present in permanent magnet motors. If if was a induction motor you wont experience any resistance until you apply power to the coils.

Thanks chap, top, top geeza!!! I agree about the PAS sensors too, can be a real pain to fit and using throttle only gives a much smoother ride.

I would really recommend installing the pedal assist. Two advantages saving battery power and getting the exercise everyone needs. But if you are in top condition and still want to ride the bike as a normal bike you can of course But hey why not have a little assist by riding up hill and or wind in your face. The gears will definitely be helpful. Thanks for sharing from Mexico.

The one thing I wish that these conversion kit manufacturers would do is make some kind of housing that can contain the controller and then the housing could bolt to the seat tube to secure it. That would make installing the kit much easier for the one installing the kit.

Glad to see you were using flush cut cutters to trim the tails off the cable ties. The number of times I cringe when someone cuts off the cable tie tails leaving a 3 x 4mm razor sharp edge. I used to use thousands of cable ties at work and if we left any sharp edges we were in trouble from whoever cut themselves on them. By using those flush cut cutters with the flush side toward the head of the tie the tail gets cut flush with the surface leaving no sharp bit sticking out.

Nice job save... you have to take in account of REAR flat tire... he has it nice and tight but that doesn't work out well once he gets a rear flat tire. I've rode my E-bike so much that I keep a repair kit on me to repair a flat to and from work. Gotten good enough I can usually to that repair within 20 minutes but the same note? I had my motor hub or the front and nine tenths of flats happen to the rear tire. Usually front tire pops up something sharp and REAR hits it. I'm going rear drive this build around... so I'm also going to go either with a solid tire or solid inner-tube because? I've had a day that was bad enough? I changed TWO flats in one day, new innertube and all and inspecting the tire itself to insure I did pull out the offending item that punctured my innertube. But even with the front mounted motor? I MADE SURE there was enough slack in the power cord leading to it? I could pull the wheel off enough to change the innertube. It's tricky but possible but ONLY if you leave enough slack with the power cable leading to the motor. He's got his power cable so snug to the motor... he is going to have to cut those zip ties to be able to get the tire FAR ENOUGH off the bike frame to change a flat. But besides that? Spot on nice and tight work! A little too tight in my opinion. Then again I use by bike to commune to work so I need the ability to fix a flat on the spot. You'd be surprised how fixing a flat for twenty minutes beats walking your bike home to fix it THEN spending that 20 minutes fixing it there.

@DudeStuff

High power front hubs are sketchy they can slide out from underneath on turns in wet weather, unlike a car that won't fall over. The dropouts on most forks aren't great for over 1000w imo. Feels really weird dropping off a kerb on front wheel power as it loses momentum instantly as the front leaves the ground.

i had an incident where the soft walled tire moved on the rim and tore the valve from the tube due to the higher speed from the rear wheel, the way to fix that problem is to coat the tube and tire with Talcum Powder, i use a small paint brush to coat the inside of the tire and rub the powder by hand to the tube, then just shake out any surplus powder from the tire, this method stops the tube sticking to the tire under load and works 100% , i now use Maxi Hookworm or Schwalbe wire rimmed tires with larger tubes and no mishaps re punctures or tire slippage, hope this helps.

It's a good thing that you never get a flat or have to service the inner tube or tire. Especially out on the road. You would want to always keep your rubber mallet with you along with some extra zip ties. I'm not sure about the connections to the controller. Hopefully they are not too permanent as well.

Great guide - it is not advisable to trash the brake sensor though, that is pretty much the number 1 safety device on home-made ebikes. It kills the motor on the slightest touch of the brake so having a finger close to it when around pedestrians could prevent a crash. Especially if you are using pedal assist - there often can be lag between pedalling and the motor turning - and more important, lag between you stopping pedalling and the motor stopping turning, which can catch people off guard and cause a crash - the brake sensor causes instant loss of power when you as much as tap the brakes helping stop this.

Yeah I don't use pedal assist because I think it's dangerous at low speed and really don't have an issue controlling the bike without both fitted

@@DudeStuff yea it can really catch you out at low speed! Good point though that *without* the assist you can do without the brake sensor - riding with assist and no sensor on those bikes is like playing Russian roulette with a semi-automatic!

@@Debbiebabe69 you are so correct. Anyway the cutouts that most suppliers send with these kits are just for cable breaks. That is why I purchased a new back hydrolic caliper with integrated cutoff switch.

19:50 ok when setting the back wheel into the actual axle holder on the frame mount itself put your Gears at the bottom then line up the chain with the cassette on the bottom Gear which is the smallest cog on your Gears then you able to easy slot it in
