Singing tips part 1 of 3 from "The Voice of the Philippines" finalist Monique Lualhati. This lesson focuses on defining and nailing vocal runs as well as enunciation and pronunciation when delivering songs. I found Monique's tips very helpful for my own singing. I hope you do as well.

I liked that teaching approach in which the girl corrects you / That makes us understand how pronounciation is important and I'll pay more attention to it , thanks .

No doubt that immediate feedback is the best. You can certainly learn with videos, but how much you could improve in one year with the videos, you could improve in 5 hours of immediate feedback.

She definitely is great. I've been told both that I need to enunciate more... and also that I need to slur the words more from diff instructors. It's hard to know what I need to work on. I would say too proper is worse than too slurred... but I'm looking for the balance.

+Music Production Videos It depends on the type of phrase and kind of sound you're trying to get. My advice is ..listen to great singers and copy them verbatim. Vocal coaches spout a lot of bullsh*t, and do teach very different points of view ...in the end listen to what the great singers are doing and do that, but listen to many different styles not just or as that vocalist might have a very different vocal make up than you

You may want to learn about placing your vowels and that could help.

David, I watch many singing tutorial videos on RU-vid and find yours among the most helpful as you get straight to the point of what to actually do to improve the voice with good demonstrations, thanks for your efforts. Paul, England.

Thanks Paul. I appreciate your comment and the feedback :) ...lots more coming soon. I've had my biggest vocal gains ever the past two months and I can't wait to share all I've been learning :)

I've just tested the enunciation theory. It worked instantly! I've always had hard time keeping the tempo -singing the vowels too long or not long enough. With this theory, I can now do it. Thanks!

+A Team There are a lot of great Filipino singers (I'm friends with lots of them), but they work and practice really hard to become great singers. It's not just something they wake up (very few anyway) one day able to do. Monique's dad is a singing coach and sometimes made her practice one line over and over again for hours. She practices still every day first thing when she wakes up.

I think this is the best teaching setup to learn proper singing because of the immediate feedback and correction. The issue is to find a teacher who uses that technique.

3:11 this is super and "meta". "There's a fire starting in my heart". RU-vid presented just one other video, for that topic, "enunciation". Anyone feeling bored because in the intro it's a male voice doing a male range (as it occurs: Adele can do the low range - that well that she needs to avoid what you call crooning) - - skip the intro and start the minute the fire started in my heart. (BTW. only here it occurs to me that it is "enunciation", not pronunciation. Funny, that I seem to have not come across that word, pronunciation, dealing with that topic, yet. Thank you! Very good lesson you do. Edit: Wow, at 4:25 you mention "pronunciation", ironically, I mean, "isn't it ironic" in context with "difference".

A simpler way to put this I think is to sing on the vowels.

I remember when someone finally said “ annunciation” but they spelt it out when they said it. Then my problem was my mouth would want to spit the words out faster than my mind was keeping beat. I had and have lots of “realizations” when it comes to learning how to sing. It’s definitely the hardest instrument to learn. This was a great video. I loved how she didn’t hesitate to keep correcting him, many people start feeling bad and back off. My buddy gave me my first singing lesson. He said you need start from the very basics. You can’t sing, you can’t sing because you haven’t learned yet. It’s like a guitar you can’t just pick it up and start playing. I was like, “damn, I can’t sing!” lol!

Nice! Both of you have awesome voice. Monique obviously have a solid & formal training, perfect pitch/hearing, what else to say? She and many other singers there are awesome. Just worth mentioning this about the English word, if you who never lived in the Philippines..IMHO, You will find these formal way of instructions a lot in Philippines, very formal classical/ broadway like, so it produced great singers, or theatrical artist.. And dealing with English language/words are taken extra serious notch, primarily because 1. it’s not the native local language you’re born into (note: it adapted the American english not Brit, since historically under US occupation) so the English language “must” be learned in a very certain way, it became a norm to handle english words & diction with same level of formalities as in learning other subjects, like math, science, etc. 2. Strong & deeply rooted US influence. Speaking English as close to them as possible is like a competitive sport. But honestly, on the balance- some english songs (mostly contemporary ones today) you’ll notice doesn’t enunciate all words clearly. Some have intentionally sang it in a way that you will not quickly understand until you read the lyrics, adding spice & flavour to the overall music, since it’s not a writing & speech contest anyway, but music. But of course once you bring it and sing it in the Philippines, especially as a local singer whether covering or doing an own version of it, it undergoes a different level of acceptability. Since the local norm of English is different, there’s always a “must” be this and “must be that” to meet the local norm otherwise expect a very high level of scrutiny. Like what I mentioned, a very classical approach, like doing a stage or theatrical singing, writing essays & declamations. But if you are the original artist, and you held a concert there singing your own english songs, (especially if foreigners) no matter how weird sounding your words may be, If you are for example someone like Alanis Morissette singing style, or a soft whispering Billie Eilish or Michael Bolton singing all nasally or Kurt Cobain (RIP) even if it sounds like a blend of singing while regurgitating a meal and no one knows what you’re saying, that’s okay because you’re a foreigner and the original artist. Just worth mentioning that one. Thanks 😊
