Kenwood House Volunteer, Mark King, gives an online talk on Countesses, Creators, Collectors, Cousins: the ‘Female’ Side of Kenwood House.
This talk covers some of the characters closely connected with contributing towards the current features of Kenwood House, London. Their influences and artefacts can be discerned in the landscape, the interior decoration, the decorative arts collections, and particularly the great art collection which can all be found at the northernmost edge of Hampstead Heath, London.
The cast of characters provides the opportunity for a guided ‘virtual’ tour through Kenwood House and its Estate, ably guided by Mark King, Kenwood House Volunteer, member of the Friends of Kenwood, and London Blue Badge tourist guide.
Music: Piano Trio no.2, written by Cécile Chaminade (1857 - 1944). She was born in Paris and died in Monte Carlo, and was the first female composer to be awarded the Légion d’Honneur in 1913. She made her début in England in 1892, was admired by Queen Victoria and would certainly have been known by some of the women in Mark King’s talk. She was relegated to obscurity after her death, and it is only since the turn of the 21st century that her work is again more easily available.
