PT Cruiser Alternator Replacement - Complicated As Usual

THERES EVEN A WAY BETTER WAY AND SHOULDN'T TAKE U NO MORE THAN 40 MINUTES MAX..you about it by removing water reservoir on top and removing heat shield and shaving off the EAR of the MANIFOLD..with a grinder.. and shave off part of the shield from same side of the ear of manifold to pull alternator out from there.ull see what I mean when u get there..way better than spending hours taking axels off or bringing down motor DONT HAVE TO THIS WAY..any questions..riosteamster21@gmail.com..GOOD LUCK.

PT/GT alternator can and will come out through the top ,(IF) you remove the nut and the one bolt on the coolant recovery bottle. Once it's out it's pretty straight forward getting the alt out through the top. Beats along the axle out, and removing mounts and doing all sorts of other stuff that's totally unnesisary. Job takes all of two maybe three hours. With hand tools. It's tight, but not impossible. On a regular PT it should be a lot easier

Pulling it out the top is WAAAAY smarter than the method shown. Once the coolant reservoir is removed you have full access to the adjustment bold on the alternator. Good call.

@@supernintendo7579 dad says its all set. He wasn't sure about removing that arm, but once i informed him it helps get it out. He worked it and got the old one out and the new one in. Hopefully aunt will be happy and nothing else goes wrong with her car. Thankfully for this truly informative video.

this is why i got mine so cheap. pain to work on. thank God for people who share on You Tube. Share the knowledge! The young man tried really hard to fix it for his mom. It sat for months after that. My determined dad and uncle fixed it, I cleaned it. Such a blessing. They got it off their property, I have a way to drive to work again. Guys who work on cars patiently make the best partners, ladies. Just FYI, feed them well when they walk in and don't complain they leave grease/dirt everywhere. You don't even know what they have been through unless you are out there with them through sleet, rain, snow...I am buying my brother new carpet runners and a portable heater.

Good for you. Basicly take your time, don't rush, or get all pissed off, slow and easy does it.out the top is less time consuming, but doable

I actually instead took out the wiped fluid bottle and it came right out thr top with a little adjusting and wiggling around where I from we should soo date hahahah

Your exaggerateing a bit there. (15 minutes). Unless you've done dozens of these ( on PTs) your going to be hard pressed to do this job in under about 2 hours. That's removal and replacement

Yeah... that's what a lot of people have been saying I should have done. I'm definitely gonna try it next time (I have a feeling I'll probably have to replace one in my GT at some point)... Lol yeah, they have a lot of their little issues. Glad I didn’t give up on mine, tho!! If the canister fails (I think it may at some point on this red PT) I will totally do a video on it! Never worked with the evap system before, but I imagine just replacing the can wouldnt be too bad

I try to do everything myself on my P.O.S.P.T.C. Have put every dollar I have saved into a piggy bank and will have enough to buy a 2019 Porsche Turbo Carrera by next summer.

That’s what everyone has been telling me as well, something about removing a heat shield and a/c lines... I think either way is probably equally as much of a pain in the butt lol, up from the top may require an extra set of hands too.. idk.

It works for the normally aspirated PTs but I'm not so sure about the turbos. My comment above applies to the NA PTs. I also own a 04 GT 5-speed which still has it's original alternator and the A/C still works. Time will tell.

Channel C.G.E. I don't think any of those problems where ever touched on that car. It's a 2003 touring with only one previous owner and I know it was in a minor accident in the past and they probably gave it up when those problems took over. I didn't know about all those front problems pt's had until After I bought it. Thing has had problems after problems. Changing the heater core was insane! But, looks like every fix on this thing is an insane job. Been watching your videos and others to see how things match up an all. Just good thing I stopped driving it before things broke and cost even more money. I refuse to pay for labor at a shop unless it is something way above what I can do, like rebuilds of engine and transmission. It gets into those areas, I'm not touching it lol everything else, I think I got the skills to tackle it as long as I have good visuals like you and others I've see on here. Forums have helped a lot with many issues, but really need those visuals for harder jobs. So thank you for all your hard work making these videos to help people like me.

oooh, I would STRONGLY recommend going back in and fixing the ground strap. Sooo many problems come up with the PT Cruiser because of broken and disconnected grounds all over the vehicle. Thanks for the video. I'll need to keep this knowledge in case I have to replace the alternator but hey, once you've done a TB/WP on this car, lifting and lowering the engine is second nature (finished my TB/WP ordeal after 30 hours last week).

I guess it depends on if you want to spend the time on it. If you want to get the car up and running quickly then it’s definitely worth the $630. If you’re willing to take the time to break a few knuckles and save the $, then its worth it too. Good luck!!

I have had to work on cars at my apartment... since I seem to be the only brave (or smart??) to do any mechanical work, the apartment manager allows me to work on cars. Plus I have worked on hers as well... btw, I'm a paralegal, not a mechanic.

Hello!! Hmm that is odd. Maybe (if you can even see down in there I don't remember lol) check to see if one of the pulleys are misaligned (like, not even with each other). Also, if you are talking about the alternator belt, it is possible to over-tighten it and it will burn out fairly quickly. That's all I can think of off the top of my head, good luck!!

The way I did it was tie a rope through one of the bolt holes for leverage and then trim the metal flashing on the back of the engine and once you do that it will come right out.
