Wait till I tell my kids that I'm not the ONLY guy who runs outside when he hears an interesting engine sound!...though, on second thought, I bet most modelers do the same. Anyway, nice build review of an interesting aircraft. Thanks for all your work!
Nice progress on this Odd looking bird ! and I can't wait to see what you do the the Paint work ! if you go with that Chipped look ? that will be precious !
Very nice build on the cockpit and the gunsight is just great ! That picture , I was thinking where I saw it, because I saw it somewhere , and now I remember that it is in a book that I had when I was a child , even in English I was always seeing the planes images and so , it is ' 'Fighters 1914 -1945' by Bill Gunston , it was the first time that I saw this odd but interesting plane :-) , funny to saw that picture here again ...now to wait for your final build , with all that weathering to be done should be again a winner !
Brilliant! It's funny how such as thing as an image can have that effect. Coincidentally, there's a wartime colour photo of a Whirlwind (has no fuselage lettering) that takes me back to a time when my friend and I would play Top Trumphs on the way to school and that was one of the cards!
I got myself an old Airfix Whirlwind and it's actually my first Airfix kit! I would have never known about the Whirlwind if it wasn't for your review. I love your airplane interiors! such talent! Will you paint the port side wing black? I swear if you do I will do too. :P Please tell us how you do your paint chipping and fading in your next update Please :)
I recall reading that the mast in front of the canopy was a late modification when the two whirlwind squadrons became Whirlybombers. Masterclass in buggered paintwork? I hope so
Actually, I forgot to mention in the video, that I also sourced a photo of a prototype - all silver finish, no fuselage lettering - and it had the antenna mast coming from the canopy, so that all makes sense. :)
Great start as usual Gary! I was wondering at some point if you could do a video showing us how you did the wingtip navigation lights? I'm a bit wary of putting an ill shaped piece of clear sprue on the end of a wing and making a mess of it! Also with regard to the photo of the Whirlwind without the aiming masts on the front, is it possible the photo could have been altered by a wartime censor?
Looking forward to the rest, it looks like you are in for a long weathering job, The roundels er type A1 but not an exspert, but then again that's what you get for drinking snobby tea ;-)
I know, I should get back to my Moroccan spice with a slice of lemon and a few mint leaves picked fresh from the garden. I'm such a peasant! Hehehe... ;)
You're popping out videos like a mad cow with a stomach upset... ;) And that is a good thing... :D Well, not for the cow.. but for the rest of us who enjoy your videos.. so the more, the merrier!! Really like the look of that kit, but as I have already built two of the old Airfix / Bilek kits I will refrain from purchasing this one. Instead I will enjoy yours, as and when it gets done.. so far it looks very promising!! :) Will be interesting to see how you'll do the weathering, I expect no less than a masterpiece.. :)
Thanks for sharing. Heard so much whining about the kit, I dropped the thought of buying it, but it looks actually nice! I should know better than to listen to all the bit**ing in the forums!
Looks like a Whirlwind to me! I actually don't see the point in whining about a 'slightly too long this' or a 'wrongly angled that' so I tend to shut off when a thread on a forum heads in the direction. Gotta keep it fun!
That went together quickly, looks great, except for the discrepancies that you're going about correcting. But, if you can weather it the way it looks in your reference images, it's going to look the biz. Looking forward to the next update. : ) Cheers, Martin P.S. What are you doing uploading videos at 4.00am UK time?!
Got it primed tonight, so starting the colouring in tomorrow. Ah, I had set it uploading at about 9pm, so it would have been ready at 4-ish. I clicked the publish button so that it would just 'go live' whenever it was processed. PS: What were you doing watching videos at 4am...? ;)
You're right - those decals do look distinctly lemony, rather than orangey - but judging from the photo of V.HE on the net, they do look more like Type A1 rather than C (I'm no expert, I just this minute looked it up at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Air_Force_roundels !), and if that's the case, you should be able to pick up a sheet for about 5 quid - try www.hannants.co.uk/product/X48032. Looking forward to seeing the finished product after your usual brilliant weathering, though I am tempted to suggest just taking a Brillo pad to it after the paint dries!
Well there you go! You're absolutely right! So where the hell did I get 'Type C' from which is totally different...? Hmmmmm.... I know the Montex mask set is for the thick yellow surround type, so I probably had one of my many, many brain farts somewhere along the way - that seem to be the normal these days! :)
