second step is the most important. i had several projects that i thought i botched but could still save somehow, its the fastest way to learn
@muselikesminecraft
@muselikesminecraft 2 года назад
Second step really depends on the situation. Never quit a model just cause you messed up somewhere along the way, it's always a good learning opportunity. However, if you're simply not having fun making a model, there's nothing wrong with stopping in my opinion. all model kits aren't created equal, and some can be truly horrible experiences.
@SerenadeURA
@SerenadeURA 2 года назад
The most important beginner advice is that there are very few permanent mistakes. Paint can be stripped and you can try again, even bad gluing can be saved. Outside of destroying your parts, almost everything can be undone in some capacity and made right.

@@skelenton92 I like Doog's models. Plasmo has better production quality and variety as Doog is primarily military aircraft. I enjoy the explanations of how and why a modeler does what they do. There are some really talented folks put there than only post videos with subtitles or no explanation at all. While it's neat to see their work there is no educational value in it for me.

I recently started building after watching videos on RU-vid for several years. Bought an airbrush for my 6th kit and it was a game changer for me. I would say I have 500ish U.S in the setup. Booth, compressor, gun, stand and cleaning pot. Well worth it if you can save for it imo.

@@an032nv go for it, honestly airbrush is not essential if you want, many people make it look like without airbrush you can't achieve a good result which simply isn't true. Although I am airbrushing a good year now, I still remember that I very much enjoyed brush painting , and for sure I am going to try again even when I own an airbrush. The trick is to buy actual good water based acrylics from brands that are related to scale modeling so they are made to stick on plastic well (I'd recommend Vallejo) working with acrylics made for canvas will be very challenging and , not enjoyable at all and the result sill not be very good. Good luck mate, enjoy !

The fun thing about model kits is the skill ceiling is just so, so high. I've been building for about 9 months now, and I'm still learning tons of new things. It really keeps the hobby from ever being dull. There are always new techniques to try, or new methods of doing things, or cool little tricks you can pick up. One of the reasons I love watching others build is seeing what they do and trying to apply it to my own.

Though our perspectives are quite different, I wholly agree with you. I am 75 y/o and have built countless models since I was 10. There are tried and true skills that will work, but there's also flow of new products and ideas that need fresh thinking and revised techniques. Many of the old products that I used no longer exist and have been replaced by safer/better materials. The biggest changes I have seen are Acrylic PAINT new ADHESIVES, and affordable AIRBRUSH. ......still learning.

I do not think of this as a beginner's video but as a masterclass. There is a LOT of information to be had. Thinning the paint to brush is not an obvious step, but critical to success. Thank you for the many hours of enjoyment I have had learning from your very well-done videos, not to mention your ASMR inducing voice. I wish, however, you would build some less spectacular kits. My shelves virtually groan under the weight of Revell, Airfix, and AMT models with their flash, ejector pin marks, and yellow old decals. I try to make silk purses from sow's ears. An expensive kit is going to look better with less effort, but I'd like to see some "that's good enough" moments.

One thing to note when building a kit with D-Day invasion stripes is that none of them were as straight and neat as the decals. I knew a guy who was a crew chief on 4th fighter group P-51Ds. He told me that the order to apply invasion stipes came at 9:00PM on June 5th 1944. He said it took all night and they used anything they could find to smear on the stipes, brooms, mops, even their hands. If you're going to go through the effort to build as realistic a model as you can, raggedy stripes would seem to be a must. There are two ways to accomplish this: One is to apply the decals as shown in this video, then follow up with a paint brush making the lines appear hand painted. Two, perhaps the better option, is use the decals as a measuring guide to mark where they go and paint the stripes in their entirety by hand.

a quick tip to those who dont know. if you want your metalic/silver colored planes to have more shine, start by painting the model gloss black and then apply the silver color after the black is dry, for some reason it makes the silver more shiny most of the time

Almost 5 years ago, I had the opportunity to acquire a model kit that, due to its age, was rare and usually somewhat expensive. I stumbled upon your videos while looking for tips and tricks for painting model kits, and ended up buying a cheap kit at the local hobby store to practice on. Even though the vast majority of your builds are painted with airbrush, your detail work with small brushes had enough wisdom in it to help me paint the entire thing by hand and gave me the confidence I needed to put together and paint up that rarer kit, which I still have today. You deserve a lot of recognition for the tips and tricks you show off.

G'day David, Another great build and this time for beginners and older folk coming back to the hobby after a long break. When I was a boy modeller there were no airbrushes for our hobby and none of the other advances in tools, jigs, chemicals etc. Just glue, paint and brushes, my first 'hobby knife' was my one and only little pocket knife. These types of videos will be really helpful and keep a beginner's focus on just the model. Since I got back into our hobby, I concentrated on aircraft of the RAAF, many of which, during WW2 and afterwards, were bare metal. I found out that multiple coats of a deep, flat black primer gave the best results when doing bare metal finishes. Also, I always paint 'invasion stripes' freehand and do not pay too much attention to getting perfect straight lines between the black and white stripes. This is because I have collected many period photographs of invasion stripes being applied by ground staff using 6 inch brushes from large tins of paint, applied out in the open air. So called invasion strips were applied at very short notice and the qualified Surface Finishers were busy replacing aircraft ID numbers and roundels that had battle damage. So, invasion or 'friendly fire' stripes are never accurate when applied from decals with precise, straight lines. I was in the RAAF and I learned that aircraft flown frequently are really quite dirty and worn when seen right up close. Weathering is, of course, for each modeller to decide but, here again, during the height of big air battles, like The Battle of Britain, all aircraft endured extreme wear and tear. Of course, on small models, this realistic weathering can look way over the top. However, when doing 1/32 or 1/35 or 1/24 scale aircraft, weathering can be shown much more like it was in reality. Mostly, we have movies to blame for this trend of meticulously painted and new looking aircraft. Antique aircraft used in these big war films in the 60s and 70s just could not be artificially weathered as they were worth a fortune to restore. In war movies you can tell the aircraft that are 'on set' 1/1 scale dummy models; these are the ones that have been weathered a little and are blown up during the film. For me, I can't over stress the importance, and time saving possibilities, in doing detailed research from old photographs found in history books and even old press clippings from newspapers of the day. There are websites that archive old blueprints and technical drawings for just about every aircraft, tank, ship or submarine used in WW1 and 2. These can be valuable sources for accuracy, particularly if you need to know where the real panel lines were; or what attachments to a tank are accurate etc. Thanks you this video, I'm going to get a 1/72 aircraft kit and restrict myself to what I had as a kid; just to see if my adult experience in modelling can turn out a better, simple little kit. Thanks David and take care. Cheers, Bill

Fantastic results. I think hand painting is under rated. Many of these planes, tanks, etc. didn't receive super high quality paints and finishes. Many were also touched up in the field by hand. So the unevenness you get from a well hand painted finish can produce very good and accurate results and is a lot of fun. Airbrushing is also fun, but presents a whole other set of difficulties. The worst of which is a clogged or spitting airbrush. This was a super fun build to watch.

I wish I had someone telling me all the tricks. But I started when we did not have internet yet and I knew nobody who was building too. When Ifirst started we still had two toy shops in my small hometown, one had Airfix, one had Revell. Shortly after only the Revell shop was left. I didn't have decal solutions for most of the time and some Revell decals from the 90s were true nightmares. Later on, life got into the way and i stopped building models. I still have a lot of unbuilt kits on the shelf. Someday in the future I will start building again.

Border Models 1/32 Lancaster. Love to see you build this amazing model. They call it the most detailed model ever made. Full interior. It will have to be a multi video series. Cheers!

*The result is very good with an airbrush, congrat PLASMO! And the solution for apply decal on the engine cover is so simple ... Thanks!*

You are the best David. Or Plasmo. Realy tu es le meilleur. Merci pour le petit pot plastique et peinture. The pot and the paint in the water pot.
