Made one of these as a shop project in machinist's school in the early 90s. People are still amazed by it. I kept it on my desk for a conversation piece.
It's true you never stop learning in this hobby! I've been doing it about 15 years and still consider myself a novice. 😅 I'm interested to know what you learnt? The shim centring trick? Ironically that's something I picked up from another youtuber. 😎
@@machinist_matt 3 things actually, will definitely use the aluminum foil to catch chips (as a new hobby machinist) The quick centering method ( probably won't use, but cool) and putting square stock in a round ER collet! (Will use in a pinch) good video, looking fwd to seeing more of your projects!
I made a real pig's ear of drilling the holes for the screws holding the column to the base. In hindsight, I think that the simplest way to get it right would be to mark out the base and drill the holes tapping size for the screws and then temporarily fix the column to the base with a tiny spot of superglue: then spot through into the column to mark for the screw holes. The base can then be removed by applying heat and the holes therein can be opened up to clearance size and countersunk. The marked holes in the column can then be drilled to depth and tapped 2.5 mm. That's the method I shall use if I build the engine again, trying to make a better job of it. Thanks and best wishes.
