Thanks for watching! I hope this video helped someone out! The explorer PTUs are similar. However you have to pull the whole rear exhaust manifold. Please consider subscribing!
Sir you're the Bob Ross of mechanics. I felt so at peace listening to you explain. You got to be the most relaxed tech I've heard. I would have had to edit out all the F-bombs myself 😅
I bought a Taurus X about 5 months ago and just last week considered the PTU and extracted what oil I could and added new. It’s quiet and working fine, so I’m considering between adding a drain plug, or just continuing to extract the oil. I believe that my service was the first time it was serviced at 150k. I do the transmission every 15k, and the coolant every 20k getting half the fluid each time and of course oil changes every 4k. Got to be kind to that water pump as well. It’s proving to be a great car and I believe it will continue to be a great car as long as I maintain it well.
Outstanding Video and explanation. I've got to tackle my daughter's 2011 Taurus limited AWD. It's roaring under acceleration. I sucked out about 8 ounces and refilled with 12 to 15 but I think the damage is done. I haven't road-tested it yet and I certainly didn't want to remove anymore than I have to and video demonstrates that. Thank you Sir. 👍
Fabulous video. Great content. Superb editing. This video is exceedingly helpful for PTU Transfer Case replacement on my son's 2011 Ford Taurus Limited AWD [not SHO model but is similar enough to be very pertinent]. Thank you so very much for sharing your expertise.

Thank you very much Big Ben, your video really helped… a lot!🤙🏽 The thorough details were on point and the video is quick and straight to the point. Quick catching, only the need to know and no time wasted. Thank you again.🙏🏽
Good vid. Just browsing around for tips/tricks that could help at work. I use my engine support bar to twist the engine for easier access. What are people doing to these to make them fail so quick and often? Running mismatched tires?🤷🏻♂️ I just don't know. I've personally had an Explorer ST, and 2 SHO's all over 120k miles one of which had over 250k and never had an issue, but I've changed roughly 25 of them over the past 10 years for customers. I just don't get why. One came in and it had literally exploded and when it did it broke the axle shaft, the tranny, the rear turbo, exhaust manifold, and oil pan. It also broke all the bolts off in the block. That one was a 17 PI car with the ecoboost.
Great video, I appreciate it. I am having todo this to my 2014 MKT 3.5 TT ecoboost AWD, it was due for big repair after 222k miles w/o major issues besides a timing chain. I know that PTU is $1,100. What should replacement cost me? If I had the tools I could do it my self but even then I rather pay.
Great video, would you recommend replacing with another ford unit or the Dorman serviceable PTU? Seems like Ford kind of F’d this up, putting an unserviceable part with gear oil in it right next to hot exhaust. A drain plug would have sure been handy.
...I love you. Thank you for this. Getting ready to do this on my MKT. Just one dumb question...Would you drill/tap and install a drain plug on this before putting it in? I'm divided on whether I should do that or not.
Great Video. I found it while looking for help as I'm changing the passenger side CV axle on my 2017 AWD Edge. When I pulled the shaft out, a bunch of fluid ran out, which was expected. What I'm not finding is information on whether that is the Mercon LV running out, or the 75-140. Is the PTU compartmentalized so that the gear oil won't run out of the passenger CV Shaft seal or is that indeed 75-140 and not LV like other videos claim? Also, I can't find a new seal anywhere for that cv shaft. Sorry for so many questions, but I'm at a loss and will add my own video once I'm done just so that there is one out there unless you have one and I just haven't located it.
HI.. when you pull the RH axle out of the PTU, it will leak out mercon LV. Not gear oil. You'll want to check the transmission fluid level after reinstalling. Heres a link for the seal kit: (You'll want to heat up the plastic seal guard before hammering it in. Check out other videos for what special tools you need to install the seal. conquestauto.com/products/edge-taurus-flex-explorer-transfer-case-output-shaft-seal-kit-oem-db5z-7275-e?
Thank you for the great video - do you know what size that valley mounting bolt is at 2 o clock, and whether it needs a thin wall socket? I can’t seem to get a socket on it no matter what
@@BigBensCarsAndCycles hey - thank you. Not trying to do PTU (yet) although it’s certainly due, trying to drop the oil pan atm and this was one of the bolts I needed to loosen. Thank you again for your help and quick response
certain models have that and it may be part of the cooling system for the ptu if I remember right. Without that sensor, you may get a check engine light
Question to ask anybody I’m trying to take the catalytic converter down on my 2015 Ford edge. It looks like it doesn’t have four bolts to pull it down. Am I gonna have to take the manifold off to change’s the gearbox?
@@thomasmica2856 on a 4cyl fusion, it's the same as an escape. I've got a video on Ford escape transmission removal which covers how to remove that type of ptu during the video
