Puberty Doesn’t Turn Us Into 'Aliens.' We’re Just Girls | Op-Docs

Adolescence isn’t easy. With puberty comes immense mental and physical change - and a self-consciousness about how you and your body are observed, treated and understood. Bronwen Parker-Rhodes's previous Op-Docs shed light on what can be isolating about childbirth and menopause. But what’s left unsaid begins even earlier, when girls are often made to feel strange and ashamed about their bodies.
In Bronwen's short film "Just Girls," above, girls ages 14 to 17 open up about the excitement, confusion and anxiety of going through puberty today. What they share speaks not just to their peers - or parents - but to all women whose coming-of-age experiences went unacknowledged. Bronwen hopes that rather than gloss over what happens during puberty, we can share it more openly.

This is a very important video. Men and boys need to be educated about the female body. We need to speak more about young girls being approached or cat called. This can happen before girls even become teens and it's scary.

@@aspiring... sarcasm isn't helping bridge the divide of understanding. If we were to put the same level of expectations on you, am I to assume you know male puberty as well as you know female puberty? It's as if parents are supposed to be there to help because they're gone through it already, would a mom be there explaining why a boy feels like burning down the world? No. A dad would probably help though but apparently society teaches us those are accessory objects with no purpose and exist purely to oppress the rightful rulers of the world. Know what I mean?

Wow, this doc really struck me. It was moving to hear these teenagers talk so candidly about their experiences. Puberty/menarche can be such a disorienting and alienating experience. Watching this documentary reminded me of how strange that time in my own life was - how you feel like you’re being shoved, face first, into the unknown. Your body is changing, your relationship to your body is changing, and the world’s relationship to you is changing, all at once. What a trip. Thanks for posting this one.

This digs up old feelings and makes me laugh at my younger self and want to laugh at these girls, but also it makes me upset I wasn’t offered resources. Had I been put on birth control to regulate myself and had a parent who taught me about biology, I would have suffered less pain, had less acne, had no risk of teen pregnancy, etc.

Being a woman is a beautiful experience. I choose to frame it in a ✨beautiful ✨way and am actually very excited to have a daughter and pass on the ways of womanhood to her. To celebrate and welcome her passage into womanhood the way I wanted someone to for me. I want to throw a period party, (I think this is a Hispanic thing) and give her red jewelry for her first moon time. Special jewelry she is to only wear during her moon time. Maybe we go to pick it out together. To be teaching her about it beforehand, and frame it in a powerful way. How women have the power to create and sustain life. That men also have the power to create life but not sustain it. Etc. I’m excited.

no one grows into a woman, you learn how to act like a woman based on the availability of appropriate role models that rise to the occaision. A girl and boy are no less free to grow up as they are to be in control of the environments that they exist in. Just because your body changes doesn't mean your mind does if it doesnt know what to do with the information. That's why you end up with adult-children well into their 20s and 30s

Respect to them! I think that it is important to educate more, the social presure put on by boys seems to be huge. It soundes like as if boys where accused of not knowing about the period. It is important not to accuse, but instead to educate them on the period. It is impossible for a man what it is and how it works. Men are just not educated about it wich would help to raise awerness! Like in many discussions about feminism men should be included and their voice should also be heard, if not they will just block the conversation, wich is not good.
