PiL performing Death Disco live at Enmore Theatre in Sydney on 11 April 2013
Public Image Ltd (PiL) are an English post-punk band formed by vocalist John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten), guitarist Keith Levene and bassist Jah Wobble, with frequent subsequent personnel changes. Lydon is the sole constant member of the band.
Lydon emerged after the break-up of the Sex Pistols with PiL's Public Image: First Issue (1978). His new band had a more experimental sound: Wobble's "droning, slow-tempo, bass-heavy noise rock, overlaid by Lydon's distinctive, vituperative rant". Their early work is often regarded as some of the most challenging and innovative music of the post-punk era. Their 1979 album Metal Box was ranked number 469 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The NME described PiL as "arguably the first post-rock group".

Lets be serious. That performance is stunning. The baseline on this track combined with the lead guitar, drums and JL's vocals makes it sensational. To any doubters read Johnny's autobiography. He is a very very interesting character and not what you may have been led to believe about him. I think he's great.

How the song and performance doesn't make people break down into tears is astonishing, miss my grandmother more and more every time I play this. Fuck Cancer.

I like PIL much more than the Pistols. I went to this concert and it was brilliant.

Saw them live in London years ago. They were as brilliant as everyone says. Rotten was like a manic angry school teacher berating a bunch of slackers for their self indulgence. His artful fury never stales.

Angry primal screaming, accompanied by a guitar that floats in and out of being metallic screeching and pure avant garde noise? Being back by a heavy bassline, pounding drums, and gurgles of synthesizers? Yep, that sounds just about right to me! Great performance! It's always a little funny to me to see the often massive gap in reactions to Public image Ltd.'s more traditional Alt-Rock and their totally experimental Post-Punk.

@Cameron...your reaction is almost exactly the same as mine was 34 years ago & I wasn't the only one.It just goes to show how incredibly different PIL were to anything else.Thankfully I stuck with it & learned to appreciate it.The fact that it still provokes the same reaction all these years later shows just how groundbreaking they were.I can't think of another band whose music still sounds radical so many years after it was first heard.

This shits all over Pistols. They were a 1 trick pony. Metal Box was a tough listen at first, but you soon realise what a ground-breaking piece of art it was.

That was awesome (and was first released in 1979 Cameron) - You have to be there with the bass rumbling and John's stage presence to really get it I suppose.

I may understand where you're coming from Cameron. A lot of their earlier songs, like this one, don't follow a traditional pop format but are more hypnotic, and it's not for everyone. I don't know how much of the band you've heard but their material is quite varied. If you're interested I recommend 'Rise' from 1986.

The clue is in the title. Death Disco consists almost entirely of this hypnotic groove with the Peer Gynt riff on top - though the lyrics (clue: about death) are good too. But as others have said formatwise the songs vary - even though the common theme is the great driving bass / drums / rhythm foundation. (Personally I'd like Lu's guitar higher in this mix, can't imagine what Religion is gonna sound like with the bass this high generally.)

You cant compare the Pistols and PiL I Love both, but PiL is so much more experimental and had this special Sound. Pistols is basically Just Rock n roll Like the Beatles (what isn't Bad, i Like both)
