Many people do not know the difference between the Public and Private Sectors of Society. This is why oxymoronic terms like "State Capitalism" exist. Well, starting in Ancient Greece and Rome and moving forwards in time, we will show what the Public Sector and Private Sectors of the economy are, how they're defined, and explain what both Capitalism and Socialism are and why they are that as well. These are the actual historic definitions and meanings backed up by the sources listed in the pinned comment, at the beginning of the video, and references will be included at the bottom of the screen.
The script for this history video was 12,523 words. And yes, this is a history video. I am neither National Socialist, Fascist, Marxist Socialist or anything else like that. And as you can tell if you watch this video in full, I am absolutely NOT promoting any of these evil ideologies in the slightest.
For a full list of all my sources, check out this link docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
John Hargreaves's original question - "In the creation of the National Socialist state by Hitler, did he not effectively privatize the whole state as his and his board of directors sole control?"

History isn’t as boring as some people think, and my goal is to get people talking about it. I also want to dispel the myths and distortions that ruin our perception of the past by asking a simple question - “But is this really the case?”. I have a 2:1 Degree in History and a passion for early 20th Century conflicts (mainly WW2). I’m therefore approaching this like I would an academic essay. Lots of sources, quotes, references and so on. Only the truth will do.
This video is discussing events or concepts that are academic, educational and historical in nature. This video is for informational purposes and was created so we may better understand the past and learn from the mistakes others have made. #history

Ian jedi Dude, the “capitalist” ruling class, only exists because of big government at least in the US. You can tie half the billionaires back to some sort of government official within their family, bill gates grandpa. Or government contracts that gives them an advantage. That is not capitalism that’s state capitalism which in essence means. You guessed it, socialism. They were paid by your tax dollars to get to where they are at. A capitalist won’t have the ability to create armies and use them, but a socialist will. The government won’t save you, and if you spin a revolution to create a new one, you are gonna end up with the same problems, if not worse. The only solution is less government.

Public companies defined as state sector is certainly quite eye-opening and I think it can explain some of the ills in today's world. The lack of a single owner who is individually responsible for the company's actions and intends to stay for the long-term essentially means that company's management only cares about short-term gains because each owner is very small and can immediately sell their shares if needed. Not to mention "too big to fail" businesses that are essentially states in themselves which can extract resources from society for their own survival. Unsurprisingly, too big to fail companies are mostly publicly-listed banks, large industrial conglomerates and state-owned businesses which have a vast amount of owners and hence it is "moral" for the state to rescue them.

That is an assumption and you are making a bizarre attempt at mindreading "... you offer no actual rebuttals..." Oh but I did and just because that it is difficult for you to grasp doesn't mean I haven't thoroughly done so in a one paragraph post. The facts are I did with sound logic and objective fact. Just because you don't find your confirmation bias in my statement of facts doesn't mean I didn't factually offer a full rebuttal based in facts. "because you know that would require you to actually look at his sources..." More mindreading and assumptions and I could not only factually say I have looked at his whole video and his sources, but I could also make a strong case that I have read more of his sources than he has because of his poor grasp of these sources and the conclusions that many of them outright refute on their own merit. I could certainly say that I factually understand them better than he does and that I factually surpass his knowledge and understanding of the subject. "... and you might actually change your mind." More assumption masquerading as fact because the argument is an intellectual polished turd with conflicting sources and he cannot factually prove his premises. So NO! "Capitalism is not a government system.." You don't say? Are you assuming again? I never asserted that it was and it was TIK who asserted I would say that in another turd polishing segment. It is an economic system, that as a sum of it's parts, has a government as an obvious component. Do you see the important distinction and key difference? That is why this argument can be refuted so easily because it originates in broken logic and foolish beliefs misrepresented as facts. "...it is an economic practice." No the practice is just a repeated process that is a component and one that is economic in nature. As I have stated already it is an economic system, a sum of it's parts, and conflating distinctly different terms and concepts is as broken as the rest. NOW, my factual rebuttal was in the first post here and you can make your case or rebuttal here and now. Just as I told your buddy TIK and who has not made an appearance despite being called out and asked to refute a single sentence argument. I may not be able to factually back this statement that follows but he seems a lot like a little squirel who is quietly and unceremoniously guarding his nuts by refusing to even defend his extraordinary claim and simply keeps polishing more turds with sources as he posts more multi hour videos using sophistry to mask the deficiency of his work.

You have been lied to. I could never understand as a kid how a stock market downturn in 1929 could affect the whole world, especially since the market recovered within 6 months and then started a long decline as the government tried to help us more and more. I remember every teacher telling us we get a depression after a war ends, but they could not explain how we were living in a post-war boom in the 50's.In fact according to my teachers "post-war boom" was an oxymoron. The answer is that according to the government metrics on the economy we were in a really really deep depression until 1964, but we did not notice because the drop off in the economy was government spending. Shows you that the government statistics you have seen all your life are a lie, or at least do not measure what they claim to measure.

It probably took you longer to read it, than it did for us to "discuss" it, learn about it... even in the relevant COLLEGE History course... as if the teachers wanted to "gloss over it", skip it, for some reason... or maybe in a hurry to get to the next part.

After 40 years and a degree in political philosophy, you just turned my conceptual understanding of capitalism on its head. If big business is part of the state, albeit a different type or aspect of what we traditionall call 'the state', advocating capitalism is really about freedom for the broad base of society: individuals and small business, the private sector. Perhaps building a co-operative is now more capitalist than a proprietary company because it's less hierarchical in its power structure, and its objective is not to go public (not to mention Zombie companies) but to distribute profits among those that created the value. Which, following capitalism, would be actual value, not a financial hoax as more and more often associated with big business (again: zombie companies).

@35:00 This seems to be a contradiction to your previous statement. You said that big businesses don't count as "private" or "capitalist" and cannot exist on their own because it would be too hard to internally manage them. But then praise Vanderbilt for competing with a state monopoly, thus becoming a big business monopolist himself, which I thought wasn't possible without state help? You also seem to inherently associate all corporations with publically traded ones, even though there are many privately traded large corporations like Koch Industries, IKEA, and Rolex. This seems to fly in the face of your assertion capitalism can only stand for small-scale, local, independently run businesses, and free competition will just naturally prevent large corporations from forming. Unless you are really going to try to say that Koch Industries is a small mom & pop operation. Furthermore, you say that big businesses find it extremely difficult to calculate internal prices efficiently, but is this inefficiency really large enough to hamper net growth of the company, and how does state funding even remedy this? As I've said, there are plenty of large, privately traded corporations that exist and turn a profit. Also, it doesn't really make sense to say that publically traded corporations don't count as capitalist simply because anyone can buy stocks. Sure, ostensibly anyone _can_ buy a share in the company, but ultimately, the *ownership* is still in private hands, and the majority shareholders that hold the actual *power* in the company, the ones who can make all the decisions, are ultimately private individuals. It really seems like you are stretching or restricting what counts as "capitalist" according to what you think is good or not, and relegate every bad outcome of capitalism to "not real capitalism." Is this not the exact same thing as the "not real socialism" argument that you decry from socialists? If, as you say at 59:32, that "left to free-market forces, the central state would collapse," what is stopping the "small private individuals" from banding together and forming unions, thus, by your definition, states? Is a stateless society even possible? As a historian, surely you realize the innate human proclivity to form groups and cooperate? If the state collapsed due to the power of the free market, then who would enforce claims to property or laws? Can there even _be_ laws without a state to enforce them? Would private security and firefighting agencies replace the tax-funded state ones? I'm not sure the Crassus model is something most people would like. This vehement opposition you have to seemingly anything government-related seems a bit counterproductive and not well thought out. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you really seem to define socialism as anytime a government or "state" has control and does something. If this is the case, then by that logic, are not absolute monarchies socialist? Wouold you really argue that monarchies are on the left side of the spectrum? Couldn't you say that socialism has always existed since the dawn of every human civilization? If so, then this seems to be a bit of a muddied definition of socialism and makes it an incredibly non-specific term, which I'm not sure was your intention.

The same happened to me. Discovering that Nazism was a version of Socialism forced me to change my perspective of the world, and it was scary for a while, but that was until you realise that everything comes down to you. You're not being "oppressed" by some unseen entity, and you don't "deserve" more just for showing up. It turns out that other individuals (not groups) are standing in your way - and they can be pushed aside by you if you work hard. You're poor because you're not creating/producing something that the rest of society values. @@TheImperatorKnightFinding out that Nazism exploited socialist socialist ideology more than anything else. I don't understand how by pure ideology one cannot distinguish ideologues like Gramsci from ideologues like Stalin or Hitler. By the way, the so-called "libertarian socialism" is a term used in political science. More than opening your eyes you have simply started repeating what every liberal says. In doubt, since we like to associate without any distinction socialism to Hitler (And no, doing public works and nationalizing and creating social groups and having a "workers" party does not mean being a Marxist, at best it is a heavy form of revisionism),I advise everyone to read "counter-history of liberalism" by domenico losurdo. You will discover many shocking things that liberals generally deny about their ideology

Near the end the dots began to connect, but I think these videos would really benefit if throughout these longer videos you had occasional moments to summarize/recap on the previous points made and how they connect to your argument. Other than that, great video!

Hello TIK, i enjoy watching your videos, as many others i too am grateful for these videos, truly taught me more history than any history book in school, with an actual explanation for the statements said. You make excellent videos, and i wish to see more like these, unbiased, truthful, academic viewpoints presented in a comprehensible video. All the best from Slovakia. Also if i may, i have a question regarding what you stated about the 'private' schooling system, i also happen to be working at school which is classified as private. We as a school receive some money in taxes as do other state schools meaning from your definition that this is a state school, but we also get tuition fees paid directly by the parents of the children attending, private individuals, therefore it is also privately funded. The school which is regarded in our state as a company which provides education, and yes the education is to some degree dictated by the curriculum given by the state. So i need to ask if the school is funded both by private sector, the parents and also the state through taxation and some state grants, if such an institution is a private institution or a state one, and also to add the school is owned by two private individuals, the founder and her husband. Thank you very much for your videos and also your reply if possible.

I cant believe I lasted through the whole video, but I'm glad I did, well done again. You do an amazing job at presenting the history, both ancient and recent, and current economic situation that most countries are in and the problems with it - especially regarding socialism or inefficient large public companies which exist in capital economies. My question is - what can be done about it? It's not a rethorical question, I actually would like you to present videos on solutions because I think you are an incredibly smart and well researched person. Some people may think "easy, vote for the more private-friendly/encouraging party", but as far as I can understand it, in the US at least, Democrats are "for the state" and Republicans are more "pro-business" which generally highly favors large businesses which are public anyway. Another important question, what do you see should be the role of the state, if any at all? Again, you mention the problem (inefficiency) but not the solution, and I would be very interested to know your views on it. Especially when it comes to healthcare, education, public works, etc. Regarding healthcare, it seems to me that given two options (a) state-governed healthcare provider vs (b) large publicly-funded inefficient insurance companies the choices are both bad. Also, what to do with families with kids with high special needs that require high levels of care? I dont pose these questions to troll, really just hope to have a discussion and to know your views.

I can agree with the fundamental position of private ownership being efficient through functioning prices, and I'm really glad you brought up the increasing similarity between increasingly larger companies and states. However, from a philosophical standpoint, and outside the additional reliance on price, a small and large company are fundamentally the same in that they are internally authoritarian. The market as a whole may avoid totalitarian control through choice and competition and so I can come to terms with this as a whole, but every business is otherwise it's own unit dictatorship. I find that this presents a danger much the same as the socialist state. If companies are able to naturally grow to their current sizes absent of the influence of the state, then any element of the private sector may become public as the company effectively assumes the role of THE state. You say that companies naturally collapse to smaller forms due to the inefficiencies of central planning, but there are other competing factors, such as mass markets, or the simplicity of interacting with fewer suppliers and buyers, or even chance, that will favour larger corporate structures that may propel them to the scale of overriding the government. While I certainly agree that the government certainly has abused it's power to create or maintain monopolies in the past, it may at least in theory serve as a protector from such companies with ambitions of attaining power. Do you think the presence of a state placed under obligations and limitations is necessary to prevent an economically-elected unaccountable dictatorship? For example many tech companies have free reign right now due to them occupying an entirely new market. As such they've become extremely powerful and abuse their power with harsh penalties, selective application of their rules, and ideological and partisan activism. Even though some of these companies received public funding in the past, they're certainly serving the private sector right now aren't they? As such I can't help but see a need for and welcome regulation restricting them. Alternatively consumers may simply choose not to use these services, or use alternatives from competition, but many simply do not or can not, and as such it becomes similar to a tyranny of the majority, wherein the majority is whatever proportion of people supporting the company that it takes to keep it afloat, except that it needn't even be a majority. And then these companies can remove their competition (eg. Parler) not through the government state, but through pressuring other companies. As you put it, they become the state; the state of the internet.

Hi TIK, as usual very interesting video. I've recently discovered your series and I'm quiet a fan, maybe not of all the answers you provide but of the questions you raise and the logic you use in your explanations. This said one doubt: what is the reality of capitalism and free market you use? According to your definition, capitalism is private own business. But who is the 'owner' of General Electric or Ford ? Looks like large companies are more oligarchy than private owned. Sure, there are private owned success stories like Microsoft Apple and Google but after a while this private companies go to stock exchange, and become... public owned, in quiet a similar way (even if less brutal) you describe other socialisms. Then it ends up that capitalism is a form socialism, in fact plouto-socialism. This raises the validity of the definition of socialism you use: if all economic models can be qualified as socialism what the point? If you've already answered this question, thanks for providing me with the link. And again thanks for your videos.

This is an amazing video and I'm really grateful for how much knowledge and insight is shared. Question though: I understand why corporations should be considered public if they are sustained by regulation and state intervention, but I don't understand why being publicly traded would necessarily make a company "public." Isn't the stock market and the corporation - assuming an actually free market - merely many individuals making individual free decisions? And a company that loses money for a long time, can still be an investment. Perhaps an entrepreneur building a giant, massively complex interconnected theme park, who loses money for many many years while it is in development before becoming massively successful (or not). Perhaps the point is just that in reality it is almost always the case that large corporations are in fact surviving off of regulation and handouts? Would love to hear more on this! Thanks

I am finding your videos and the range of topics very interesting and some challenging of my previous understanding of events mostly because of the forensic way you deal with specific events / topics . you've given me lots to think about , I particularly like the "don't take my word alone as truth here are the sources check it out yourself" approach ,though some of the books referenced have eye watering prices . .

Hi TIK. Really enjoy your videos, smashed through crusader and am now eagerly anticipating each Stalingrad release. Since I’m all caught up on your battlestorm content I’ve ended up going through some of your other material and that’s how I found this video. I get what you’re saying in the video, I’m just interested to know your own opinions on the balance of power between the individual and the state. I ask because I take an interest in the third industrial revolution and think this can only be rapidly achieved with the guiding hand of the state using the levers off the state like collectivised investment and subsidies of new technologies until they are mature enough to survive in the free market. Given that, to my understanding, the third industrial revolution will bring higher levels of efficiency and a move away from non renewable to renewable energy sources (a pretty good idea given that capitalism is based on open world theory where energy resources are not finite and no account is given to the cost of the degradation of the environment) it is something I greatly desire but do not think our capitalism could achieve on its own (for the reasons I previously bracketed). Only a collective state can put controls in place in the short term to redirect an economy. Sure, you can argue that once none renewables become more scarce, prices would naturally increase and other renewable energy sources would become more economically viable. There are, however, loads more fossil fuels available to burn, well more than would take us past any point of no return for catastrophic climate change. Only the state can artificially adjust the market to charge the direction of the economic model to avert climate catastrophe (if you believe in the climate change argument). This is an extreme example but I believe it to be the case so I’ll use it because, if true, the planet will suffer and without this pale blue dot there isn’t going to be a society that is with being a part of (war, famine, mass migration and mad max anarchy). I’m just interested if you, having thought yourself a socialist back when you were a student have now thrown yourself behind libertarian Laissez-faire ideals or if you can still see some benefit in collective ‘state’ interventions. This isn’t an attack or challenge or attempt to trip you up. I’m just interested if you think the collective state can have its place in guiding society to a better place.

Programmers learn that the key to writing a good code is to make it as short as possible, because it makes it also easier for other programmers to read and understand. Indeed, I could spend hours writing multitudes of lines, or I could learn methods to perform the same amount of work, in a marginally shorter time, which in turn makes it more bearable and comprehensible for other programmers to read. There is absolutely no question what is worth more here. "Work smarter, not harder."
