Hi Dale! We made a mistake! To change the imprint name to your imprint, you will have to purchase an ISBN, either from Lulu or Bowker. If you use a free ISBN from Lulu, the imprint name will default to Lulu Publishing. Happy publishing!

Question: Why should I go to Lulu if I am going directly to Amazon?

Additional print options and features KDP does not have. Also, Amazon isn't the be all, end all of self-publishing. Authors need options.

Hey Dale! Thanks for the great video. I'm still a bit confused about the ISBN. I've been publishing my books on KDP and getting a free KDP ISBN from them for years. Now I want to also sell the same books on Shopify via Lulu. I'd like to stick to free ISBN if that's possible. So my question is, can the same book with the same format (paperback) have two different ISBNs depending on the publisher (one for Amazon KDP and one for Lulu)?

I'm making my first publishing attempt with Lulu this week after only using KDP previously. I'm a bit nervous because I've had some issues with Lulu when I made some orders and the books never arrived, so I ended up out of pocket. I'm hoping I have better luck getting the proof of my own book!

Q #2 - On a previous video, it was recommended to purchase an ISBN through Bowker, unless the other considered provider is reputable. Without compromising you, would you consider Lulu to be that reputable ISBN provider?

Dale, these are super helpful videos. I do have one question I could not seem to find answered in your videos. Is the binding quality the same between Lulu dust jacket books and Lulu case-wrap? I could not find out whether the cover options affected the binding quality or not? Thanks so much Dale, Andrew

Lulu still has my books for sale after I deleted my account about 2 years ago. I called twice about this & and no action taken. I see used copies for sale on Amazon & have never received royalties!

I’m glad to hear your situation got cleared up. Lulu had quite a HUGE cleanup task on their hands and had a lot of unhappy account holders to manage while they steadied the ship. I didn’t envy them for all the hits they took during that time. But they made it though and I’m glad they got your issues handled.

I'll have to look into Lulu, as KDP print is a bit of a letdown. Mainly because as an Australian, there is NO WAY I can get my own paperbacks, short of waiting for them to appear on something like Book Depository, which can take ages. Other than that, KDP Print is ok.

I am Australian too Riley and have sold on Amazon FBA for several years and Merch by Amazon since it started and have got a US address through the Myus.com website. It is great. You really only need to see one of your books to see what it is like. Amazon is a huge company and worth putting your fishing line into ...

Hi Dale! You might remember me from one of your other videos where I said I was thinking of publishing with KDP. Lulu also seems like a good option. I just want to hear your opinion on the two publishers and who you would personally choose. And I am currently editing my book but I needed a little break so watching ur channel.

Though I’ve had a great relationship with Lulu, I still lean heavily in favor of KDP. That’s just my opinion.

Good Morning Dale! Wonderful information.... I was wondering if I have uploaded information to KDP and I desire to have distribution through LuLu, can this be done? If so, I do I make sure there is no conflict with Amazon? Thank you..

It depends. Is your ebook enrolled in KDP Select? And for print, you’re good. Just deselect the Amazon distribution option in your Lulu dashboard. You can still use Barnes & Noble and Ingram.

Hi Dale, I just liked and subscribed. That was quite informative on various aspects of publishing. My attention piqued when Red Hat® was mentioned since my husband is a programmer and has talked a lot about Red Hat® over the years. I'll be playing this video for him later. I have a question, someone else's video stated that it takes several weeks to get a Lulu book posted to Amazon, but the video is from way back in 2011. Have you actually used Lulu for any of your books, and if so, who long does it take to get to Amazon? Also, though we all strive for our content to be perfect, mistakes can happen, so if a mistake is noticed after the book is published through Lulu, how hard is it to correct the mistake and have that correction transmitted to the books brought through Amazon? The same 2011 video said it was quite difficult, but of course that was seven years ago, so I hope there have been improvements since then. Anyway, thanks for posting this. Chelsea is a delight.

I have yet to break ground with Lulu, BUT I'm right now in the midst of trying their calendar feature. Books are up next on the list. I'm especially interested in their spiral book feature and hardback options. From my understanding, uploading corrected manuscripts functions like most other publishing platforms. Glad you enjoyed the video! More to come for sure.

@Wren Sanders McKay I publish mine at Lulu.com. To my experience it has taken an average of 2 to 3 weeks for my books to appear on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. That is paperback. My ebooks sometimes get there sooner. I hear that I'm lucky. The company says please give it 6 to 8 weeks to appear. But so far mine has been sooner. I just released some new books and they took around 3 1/2 weeks. Some of them still haven't been approved by Amazon even though they are listed for sale. Lulu says Amazon is swamped at the moment preChristmas rush not to mention the loads of no content books being uploaded. But when times are slower they are usually good about getting the books up. I think it's more Amazon and other outlets that take more time. I know Ingrams is a little faster to approve a book than Amazon.

the bad thing about lulu print paperpack is you have to buy your proof not like kdp, you publish and you sell, in lulu u publish, you buy proof, then you start selling, sooo bad

Yeah, Dale this is true. You can sale your book on lulu.com platform in their store with no problem, but once you want to use the agragated side of the program and send your book over to amazon, or anywhere else they require you to buy a proof. I agree with OMIRIX above, this is a turn off. Who wants to have thousands of book proofs in their house. I don't.

here the message : In order to approve your book for distribution, a proof copy of the most recent version of your book must be purchased. Once processed, an approval button will appear on your my projects page. Please wait for the delivery of your proof and review it thoroughly before continuing the distribution process.

Need Help! I had to make corrections to my book I published on lulu after seeing the issues from my author proof. I now want to change it from perfect bound to spiral. I’m on here now and it’s not allowing me to change the paper color and the bound! Is there away to change it??

There's support available through the dashboard. I don't know that Lulu checks comments here and I'm just now breaking ground on the platform, so my guess is as good as yours. Their support is responsive and efficient, so drop them a line. I had an issue with correcting a hardcover book and they answered in about a day.

Update: Lulu states that once you add a ISBN to a book, you can’t switch to coil bound. You ISBN has to be removed and then a start the process over with that book. Once the ISBN is removed, it can only be sold at lulu. The rep told me that I can still publish a perfect bound of the same book and add ISBN to sell on all platforms.

You know what, I should've known better. ISBNs are static. This isn't just a Lulu policy, it's ISBNs in general. Sorry, it took that much work to find out, but glad you found a solution.
