In my area we are pretty much down to Publix or Winn Dixie. There is a Wal-Mart and an Aldes but the selection at both is pretty slim and Wal-Mart turned a lot of local shoppers off when they went full self-serve checkout. There are people there to help but I prefer regular checkouts and I'm not alone. Anyway, Publix is head and shoulders above the rest. I really like their deli and bakery but their fish market and butcher sections are also quite good. The staff is also more helpful and friendly. For me anyway, they are my go-to grocer.

ALL Publix managers come from one place, the bottom up! You can only become a manager at a Publix by working from bag boy or at a warehouse up to that position. That’s why you’ll NEVER find one that’s rude or unprofessional, or one that doesn’t know EVERYTHING about a Publix store

Thank you for covering this! I was a Publix employee for ten years, and I it's been my favorite place to shop and work. As an employee, you have access to stock in the company even if you are part time. The stock is in a Closed Market so the only thing that determines it's value is how well the company is doing financially....which is always in the black. And YES Customer Service is always a priority with Publix. About Mr. George's Open Door Policy....the story goes, that when he was working for Piggly Wiggly, he made an appointment with the big wigs of the chain to share his ideas for the company and he was made to wait for HOURS because they were "In a very important meeting" and when the big wigs came out of the office to go home for the day, they were talking about their golf scores and completely ignored Mr. George. I myself went back to Florida recently, Tampa to be precise, and not far from the hotel was a Publix. And *the shelves were stocked*, I believe this is because Publix has it's own infrastructure when it comes to it's products, especially their store brand (which is JUST AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER than Name Brand). And I promised my family that I would bring home a Publix sub ( I'm in Indiana and the closest Publix is in Tennessee). If you ever make your way to a Publix Supermarket, I highly recommend their Ice Cream, their Subs such as the Ultimate (ham, turkey and roast beef), the Chicken Tender Sub (plain or with Mild Texas Pete Buffalo Sauce), and the Holiday Sub ( Boar's Head Turkey, smoked gruyere cheese, bacon, and Publix's Cranberry Orange Relish) and their sub's bread is baked fresh in the bakery twice a day, Cuban Bread, Guava Pastry, Birthday Cakes that are *never, ever dry* , and their Lemon Pepper Rotisserie Chicken.
@scarycarrie1809

I agree with you about their ice cream, very creamy and flavorful. I especially enjoy their holiday flavors and love the rum raisin as well. And they're a half gallon, not 48. oz. (1.75 quart).

Worked as a bagger for 3 years at three different Publix in Lakeland, Florida, 1983-1986. Always felt a.certain pride. In those days, Publix was not open on Sundays, so employees could go to church. But when George Jenkins stepped down from daily operations, his successor immediately opened stores on Sunday. They SAID Sunday work would be voluntary, but that didn't last long. Still...mostly good memories of the job.

I remember that big art deco wing shape would light up at night with neon lights. It was one of the first things I remember vividly from my childhood. I was probably around 5 years old (1965). I remember the Rexall because my dad left me in his truck and went inside for just a minute and some guy tried to lure me out of the truck with an ice cream cone. I locked the doors and he took off. When I told my dad about it, he got a gun out of the glovebox and went after the guy but he had split by then. It has never been a safe world.

They are actually supposed to expand into Kentucky sometime next year! They've confirmed that they're opening a store in Louisville.

Been with publix supermarket for 43 years and still working with them. There's no other food chain like publix. The belief that Mr. George established early on still exists. Publix always takes care of its associates and customers 100%.

I love shopping at Publix. They closed the market nearest to me so I shop there rarely now. But I love the bakery and deli area. Their produce is always so fresh and they have produce that other markets in the area don't carry like Fennel and Driscoll's strawberries which are always sweet. Their beer selection is quite varied and I love that you can build your own six pack.

My first job at 16 was Publix back in 1997. I was a sophomore in high school and only worked part-time. My best friend worked with me too. I enjoyed it but didn't stay long due to still being a student.

Publix supermarkets are always, clean and friendly old fashion service. Polite, friendly, helpful, good attitudes. They'er prices are a little pricey, but it's still worth it to shop at them.

Publix makes a point of hiring employees with disabilities. At my Publix we have a checkout woman who is deaf and there is a sign and her name tag say she speaks American Sign Language. At a different Publix when I was growing up there was a bag boy for a number of years with, I think, muscular dystrophy (used a sort of walker). I’ve seen a number of employees with Down’s syndrome. Publix is a good store.

A friend of mine worked "part-time" there but he quit several months later saying that he had differences with his store manager even though my friend always kept his assigned area well-stocked. Needless to say that he has never walked in into one of these stores in over a year. Me? I shop where ever I find good deals.

I worked at a Publix in South Florida in the mid-1970's while in high school. We had to wear long pants, solid color button-down shirts, and ties. I was so happy the stores were closed on Sunday, because the Saturday shift was 7 am to 7 pm. It was actually 6:30 am to 9 pm, as we had to prep the store before opening, and do the weekly major cleaning after closing. Every night of the week there were scheduled cleaning tasks. If you were willing to work hard, they gave you lots of responsibility.

My first occupation was at the age of 14, a bag boy at Publix (store #152) in Plantation. Some of the best years of my life. I was fortunate to meet Mr. Jenkins, not once, but on two separate occasions. Got to say hello and shake his hand. Those were the old days when he’d pull up unexpectedly, being driven around and visiting different stores in his Cadi, walking right in the store proudly wearing his Publix tie and a long cigar in his mouth. The next thing you knew, you’re being introduced by your store manager and third man. “Hello, young man…my name is George Jenkins”. I’ll never forget that.

Now that store is#703. I started there in 2001-2020, now I'm at 747 in plantation, and I'm heading to store 1776 in May

@@kristianolliviere9045 I worked at 342 on knob hill for a few years after 152. That whole mall burned to the ground because of a kitchen fire at the pizza place. Only thing that saved Publix 152 from burning too was the 15-20’ alley that separated the mall from Publix. Of course, they had to level it all and begin again.
