The homes in the pictures appear to be above high tide. So, what's your point? Shouldn't the government set aside sections for public access? Why must the private property owners pay?

I dont live near enough to a coast to realize this is a problem for coastal towns. Ty for spreading awareness. I would have never imagined this could be a problem for people, and some people may say this isnt a big problem but it is. I can imagine the disparities this can create. Everyday i learn more and more how people treat others less than, and how it manifests in SO many different ways

@blobmonster9494 I understand that fully. However, why must the residents whom been there for decades be prohibited from using the beaches that they were using before rich people move there. If they purchased rights to that part of the island then that's different. But they can't put up a fence illegally to keep people out.

Well in all honesty Hawaii is a part of the us and if a us citizen pays for the land its theirs to do with what they will as long as they pay property tax. To remedy this Hawaii government should set aside protected land that cannot be built on or altered by private entities.

Similar thing just recently happened in Thailand where a guy from New Zealand kicked a female doctor in the back because she was sitting "on his" private resort stairs leading down the beach which is illegal. This caused an uproar and now everyone around there just walk past his resort and sit on the stairs, waiting for him to make a move again.

Why this Rich people allowed to build their houses right by the water if its illegal
@Craig-ib7gk
@Craig-ib7gk Месяц назад
It's not illegal to build except below the highest-tide line (which would be stupid to build lower-than anyway). It's illegal to block access to the beach. In fact, in many places you , the private land owner, must provide that access. Maui, HI has similar laws. All beaches are public. All beaches except military coastal establishments can be freely visited by the public. Further, all private "ocean-front" land development MUST be built well-beyond the highest-tide line, and MUST provide reasonable access to the public, including ADA compliance, to cut through their property to reach said-beaches. Kapalua Bay beaches are a good example of this. About 100 yards up from the shoreline is a lateral sidewalk, parallel to the surf line. Everything further up from that sidewalk is private property, but everything on the ocean side of the walk is open to the public. Those sidewalks periodically have abutments up the hills, leading from streets or lot parking, where people can enter and walk down to the beach.

I was literally talking about this yesterday with my co workers. People buy these properties and try to take over public beaches. Many times it’s foreigners coming from elsewhere taking the beaches from the community that was there first.
