San Juan is but a tiny slice of Puerto Rico. The most amazing aspects of the island are outside the city. Looks like you guys had a blast. If you ever go back try the south coast, Playa El Cocal in Yabucoa, or Isla Culebra both have amazing beaches.

The mistake people from mainland US make is think PR is the same as any other state. While it may have some retail/food entities from US, it's its own country. It's more like visiting any other Latin American country. A lot of the abandoned buildings has to do with old inheritance laws which are antiquated and more often than not beneficiaries not wanting to do anything with the buildings due to financial status or are they're not found since they've moved to US. The government recently passed a law to force a sale after 5 years or so if property is not claimed or deemed public disturbance. There is also a big infrastructure projet to start soon that hopefully will clean up the electrical system.

Thank you for having an open mind, and for taking time to find out more about PR. I hope that you enjoyed it enough to visit again some time. There is A LOT to explore and enjoy. One website that I've really benefited from for 10+ years is PuertoRicoDayTrips. GREAT source of information.
