As always, great instructions. I truly like that you mention the #4 rope (Size) you use, and the length, which in this case is 36 inches. Not many mention this and it's extremely helpful.

Had my neighbor come over today with one of these things and sure enough I knew I would find some help with it on RU-vid!!! Much appreciated on the instructions on how to re-thread this thing. I wasn't sure if it was the same thing as my Stihl MS391 so I figured better to be safe than sorry. Regardless, Thanks Again for this video. Made my job 100x Easier on re-threading the pull cord.

Thanks for the video, had this bookmarked for the past year since I knew it was going to need it at some point. Ordered some rope on amazon as well. 'Lo and behold, rope got stuck pulled out and had to do the replacement. This video made it pretty damn painless, even though my saw is about ten years older than the one you used.

Great job on that video. I looked it up because I have to replace the cord on my MS 180 tomorrow. I was thinking about using parachute cord, thinking it might be tougher, but not sure. I create lots of instructional videos, too (mostly in the nursing/medical world), so I really appreciate how well you did this one. Thanks for sharing that info with us!

I’m know this is an old post but did you ever replace the cord with parachute cord?
@Vrider97
@Vrider97 Год назад
@@mannyo2909 , I ended up having other problems with the lightweight MS 180, so I did not replace the cord. I ended up buying the MS 250 instead. I'm not sure if the parachute cord would work on the 250, because the cranking pull is totally different from that on the 180. Pulling the cord on the 180 has almost no resistance, since it easily winds some kind of spring that then releases and cranks the engine. However, on the 250, there is a direct connection to the engine, so the pull pressure on the cord is MUCH stronger. I think on the 250, I'd use the pull cord from Stihl. Just my thoughts. :)
@mannyo2909

@@Vrider97 yeah that’s what I have an ms250, I used the 3.5 mm cord to replace mine.

Thanks so much for making this video. Using your clear directions I was able to replace the pull rope on my MS250. I didn't have any #4 starter rope so I was able to use a length of parachute cord, which seems to be about the same diameter. Just started it up now so I guess I'm good to go. Thanks!

I recently had problem on my trimmer every time I started I pulled the rope out of the plate. the knot was clean so was the hole. I reinstalled it and I could pull like crazy on it and it would stay put but as soon as I was to start the machine it popped out again, easily. Clean as a whistle, hole and knot intact. now I installed slightly longer rope as I thought it might be that I was pulling it fully. everything okay for now and it better be if it wants to win my trust again! :D lousy swed

That is nice information to know and if I can get my MS-250 to start, I may end up having to replace my rope. Right now the only saw I have which works fine is my old Poulan saw. It have given me great service since getting it in 2000 new. Since my Stihl saw never worked for me, I just purchased a new Poulan Pro which I have not used yet. My main problem with the Stihl saw is getting it to start. I tried the instructions which came with the saw, but it didn't work. The Stihl saw have been in the shop several times and it still don't start like it should, but the other saw starts just fine.

l have a Giantz 75cc 22'' chainsaw. This chainsaw has 2 springs, one ( assuming) sucks the rope in which is 6mm, other is 12mm starts the engine. After l changed the snapped spring (12mm) Everything was ok till l tried starting it. There was only one revolution which wasnt enough to start it. l fooled around with for a while but, l coudnt work it out. Where did l go wrong? Thank you for sharing such a helpful video :)

Check all the wiring before replacing the module including soldering the connections and ohm check the switch and magnatron coil to see if there are any problems anywhere. Usually the modules dont wear out. The module can be shorted which means it will not work at all. Since you have weak spark go over the wiring, checking for places that it might have rubbed through arcing or shorting to ground. Finally use an ohm meter to check the specs on the coil and off switch.

I am here 8 years later but my 6 hiur old MS 259's stock pull cord seperated from it outer sheath and the inner was like a wet noodle ! I took it to a dealer thinking it was covered under warranty..nope,they charged me $26..got it hope,pulled the cord 4 times and saw was about to start so I took off the choke position and pulled cord again and it all came out and unraveled. so back to the tech and he said he put a new rope on it,picked it up yesterday late,so this morning pulled on it and saw almost started on 1st pull,took off choke position again and pulled and damn cord came all the way out again and recoil spring undid,.so I took it apart completely and re-assembled and installed back on saw and pulled on it 4 times and it started and this time the cord and everythings still together..so I will do the repairs from now on..now tomorrow it may blow up again but I know what to do. I did call Stihl today and guy called me right back and is sending me a brand new recoil housing and fully assembled for free.. I did notice something,,that is that some 250's have only 1 pawl/dog and others have 2..this is on plain jane MS 250 only..mine has the 1 and I was thinking maybe it needs 2 to make it maybe stouter so it can even the load across the plastic piece that holds the rope when pulling the cord to start the saw up..anyone here know about this,and if so what do you think ? I have a shitload of trees that need to be cut and I need this saw,and don't want to worry about the cord assembly breaking again.
