Oh BTW. When you unpack a new lawn mower, there are little tags and stickers all over the engine to tell you to add oil before starting. Same with any 4 cycle engine.

hard to pull or won't pull?....take out the spark plug and then keep pulling the rope until you see the oil shoot out from the spark plug hole. when you see no more oil coming out wipe the oil from the plug and put back in. should start right up.

I have a craftsman lawn mower that did the same thing. It's a few years old and I never changed the oil. The last time I started it, it slowly died like it ran out of gas but I had fresh gas in the tank. When I pulled on the cord, I could barely pull it. I checked the oil and there was a small drop of oil on the tip of the stick. I thought, oh oh, but I was not ready to accept defeat. I filled it with fresh oil and sprayed seafoam in the cylinder through the sparkplug hole. To my amazement it started easily on the first pull and runs great! Just some FYI.

Several years ago I learned a similar story. With nothing less than a brand new Alfa Romeo. By brand new I mean out of the show room, that kind of new! That particular Alfa dealer gave the task of preparing and finish the car, for client delivery. To the new kid who add been there for just a few days... an apprentice at best. Long story short. The client was still able to drive almost 150 km (not bad)! Than the engine gave up. Leaving behind a huge mess to be cleared among client/dealer/Alfa. With the middle man (dealer) trying to wash their hands out of the subject. I know for certain that the client took months to get a new car... Nowadays I'm not sure. But at that time it was common for many brands to send their new cars "dry". Oil of the type recommended for the particular market and place. Was added as part of the pre-deliver operations.

To answer what I'd do, replace the head gasket, fill it up full of ATF, get it freed up, turning smoother and try running it again. It'll probably at least somewhat run, might be salvageable, and even if you used it until it died again, can't beat the price.

Thats really good advice. However in the next video I'll discover the bottom end trashed so I need to figure out what to do then. More than likely I'll try and salvage it but on a budget.

I really appreciate the fact you get straight to the point, have great camera work, and you have the perfect voice which is easily and clearly understood. Maybe you could get voiceover work? Regarding this top quality tin foil machine, I'd be tempted to oil up the bore etc, fill it with oil and see if it actually runs? You have no money into it and it would be an interesting video to hear the engine and see if it made power to mow. Just a thought. Would be good channel content though, people love that sort of thing. I'm from NZ, but I'm guessing that is about as cheap as mowers get? Looks like a good mower. My guess is you should turn it on its side . Disconnect the wire from the plug..then try turning the BLADE. After a few times and the BLADE turns, reconnect the spark plug, set the mower upright, then try the recoil rope now. It should work now. If not..then you have a problem on your hand. You could possibly get by with a light hone & new piston rings to hone the scratches out. When I honed my 3hp engines cylinder out it had minor scratches in the cylinder but not enough that I can feel the scratches with my fingernail, after a light hone & new piston rings, the engine didn't burn oil anymore. Yes,I didn't get a Richards, one of them who was in my area seized the engine up in his brand new Yamaha YZ125 motocross bike engine that his dad bought him. He didn't put any 2 stroke oil in the oil tank before he rode it so that damage which was done to $6000 AUD worth of motorbike in the 1990's obviously wasn't covered under warranty !

No kidding that's a shame on not putting oil in it....... I don't know if you took it apart yet ???? If you didn't I have a suggestion for you ....... Get a new head gasket and put it back together........ Then halfway flood the cylinder with Marvel Mystery oil and put some of the same in the crankcase .............. Turn the mower on its ass end to let the oil in the cylinder soak for a day..... Then take the spark plug out and spin the engine with a drill to blow it out ........ Then keep spinning the engine with the drill to circulate the oil in the engine..... Let that soak for a while while spinning every 2 or 3 hours......... Check compression with the drill turning the engine ...... Remember you have the ACR in that engine...... If you have at least 45 PSI you are good to go ......... I have done that a few times on the older L Heads and they did fine......... Let me know Mon Ami ~!~!

I knew a guy that did this. He bought a new mower, never read the directions, started it up, and seized it. Amazingly the store took it back and gave him a refund. Can you rebuild this and rehone the cylinder? I rehoned a B&S from 1964 once in an engine rebuild class. It was pretty easy but that was 25 years ago.

I don't recall that I even bothered to re-hone the cylinder. I just to remove the excess aluminum on the journal , from it overheating, put it back together and it's been running ever since.

Unfortunately, thats why i usually hunt the older ones. The fresh pallet buys (as i call them, because sellers typically buy these by the pallet from HD or Lowes liquidators. These are RTVs , or Return to Vendor because they are damaged , defective, warranty etc where they are returned to the manufacturer and the manufacturer doesnt want them and just take the loss and so they sell them super to cheap liquidator wholesale houses for a few bucks. They in turn mix these up with other RTV items, toasters, coffee makers, etc and but them on a pallet 6 ft high. Plastic wrap them and sell the pallet like a " grab bag" if you remember as a kid , and the price could be from $100 to $200 per pallet. I stay away because 85 to 90 percent of pallet buy engines were either run without oil or the 2 cycle ones were run with straight gas.

Stumbled across this video in research for my mom's identical mower. On first examination the air foam filter was saturated with oil. As it ran fine last season and she couldn't get it to start. I removed the plastic cover and noticed that the tube coming from the engine block was feeding oil into the air filter which I had a fear that the oil got into the carburetor. I cleaned as much as possible which wasn't bad. I then checked the plug and it was filed with oil. I replaced the plug and put everything back together. Now the recoil/pull rope is locked up. I'm planning on taking the recoil cover off again and plug. Plug first. It just may be in a compression lock. Hopefully it will run again.

I picked up an old Bolens mower that was rusted through mostly to get the discharge chute and spare parts from the engine, it was a 2013 model so it was the first year they made these little OHV Briggs engines, the engine seemed fine, I went and stuck it on another deck I had then it wouldn't turn over anymore, I adjusted the valve lash to around 4 thou on both rockers and it was still way too hard to pull on the compression stroke, I took the head off and it didn't look excessively carboned, it looked like the compression release was tipping the rocker in the head, I don't know maybe the compression relief was sticking or the cam lobes were incredibly worn, the oil that came out was pretty dark and it's a cheap unit with the foam filter, so it's probably just worn out, I gave up on it because I see absolutely no value in trying to open these engines up since first I'd have to get the well rusted on blade adapter off and then I'd have to open it and even if I did find a failure I'm not going to fix a 10 year old high hours one of these engines, so to the curb it went for the scrap pickers.

it would seem the carb is leaking some fuel into the engine and causing the engine to "hydrolock" Leave the spark plug out for a few days, and twice day, pull the rope a few times. Now I wonder how the heck they forgot to put oil in the engine. The oil is literally one of the first things you pull out when unboxing. Maybe they didn't know where it goes? They should have read the owner's manual to see where to put the oil. The only other thing I can think of is that the mower wasn't shipped with oil. It's a shame this mower had died so young. It's so clean!

Great to hear! Now that I think about it, it seems that people like to skip a crucial step when they don't understand how to do something. If this was a trimmer or a blower, it'd probably be destroyed due to running straight gasoline. But you get a bottle of 2 cycle oil when you unbox new equipment. The fact that there is a bottle of oil should tell them that the engine requires it. Since there is no oil fill on 2 stroke engines, they might get confused and check the manual to see where to put the oil. Only then, by reading the manual, they learn to mix it with the gasoline. I get that some people are unfamiliar with 2 stroke engines, and lawn equipment in general, but new equipment comes with a manual for a reason and reading it will tell any new person how it operates and how to use it correctly.

"...the mower wasn't shipped with oil." FYI rarely any equipment (mowers, cars, tractors...) is shipped with full liquids. It's neither a surprise or detrimental. It's simple practice and economy. Exercise: Ship 500 mowers, that "just" take 1.5 liter of oil in it's engine. With a density around ~0.9Kg/L. So 500x1.5x0.9 = 675Kg. That's way more than half a ton of extra weight. To ship exactly the same quantity of product! As a manufacturer you'll pay for the extra weight AND you pay for the extra oil... While adding an extra hazard to deal with, if something happens. Not good at all. See where I'm going?! ;-) It only get worst. Most products use way more than just 1.5L of oil. Many times have other oils and coolant added to the equation. And let's not talk about fuel's during transport! Also the fact, that the same product can be sent to the market on the colder North or warm climate South. Demanding different types of oil from the get go. Which create another management nightmare! ;-)
