Pulley winching - attach return line left, or right?

#winching
When you pulley-winch - double-line pull, triple line etc - typically you return the line back to the car, and often that's to a recovery point which is either on the left or right side of the car. Does it make a difference?

And yet another good video! Thank you for all your info. You are now my official go to guy for off road science! Seriously, great job, congrats.

I would never have thought of that. Thanks for the great info. I guess it also demonstrates the twisting forces applied to the chassis which would need to be taken into consideration in some situations.

Fantastic Robert, I can see where this can increase safety margins of a potential rollover of vehicle at steep incline or a near a cliff edge when one side of the vehicle is higher than the other side. 👍

Absolutely! Or, if done wrong, increase risk.

Downforce problem: I recall the days people would have a bridle shackled to the front (or rear) axle, not the chassis (Army salvage book advice?). Winching or towing would then tend to lift the axle up and out of mud/hole rather than force it down. Trouble was the bridle would get hung up on rocks/timber if not secured properly when not in use. Should be considered as an option in gnarly situations rather than simply going for chassis pull mounts even on IFS vehicles. Go low for best pull effort - especially if your rig is jacked up and on 35s... Maybe Robert, you could you could research this aspect.

Good stuff. An interesting phenomenon for sure. I definitely try to spread the load out as much as practical when I can. If you have two recovery points up front, might as well use both of them when you can. In the case in the video, running the winch line return leg back to the opposite recovery point would have been my preference. That seems like it would have minimized the yaw/slip effect ( and spread out the load to more anchor points on the chassis ). One thing that has been bugging me with a lot of Spanish Burton rigging demonstrations lately, the lack of properly upsizing the compound leg of the system. If the winch is using X strength rope, we should be rigging XX strength in the compound leg. Most winch line is already sized less than 2:1 FOS generally speaking, so we would severely be limiting ourselves by using the same strength line for the compound legs. While traditional snatch blocks and recovery rings are limited to single line passage, modern wide groove recovery rings, like my Bee Safe Recovery Gear or the Yankum unit, have enough capacity to support twin'd winch lines in these setups. If the winch extension is the same diameter of the winch line, I suggest looking at adding the capability to 'twin' or double the extension line used for the compound legs. The other option, which is also supported by the new wide gear rings, is to upgrade the extension to something twice as strong as the winch line. Bee Safe out there.

What do you mean by "opposite"? Yes agree with SB rigs, I'm going to cover that.

@@L2SFBC Winch line returned to one of the recovery points on the front of the vehicle ( vs to the X-lock? ). The extension used to form the Burton, to the other recovery point. This would more evenly distribute the forces. The load on that return leg combination between the burton AND winch line is mildly concerning anyways....roughly up to 3x winch force?
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC 6 месяцев назад
Ah ok yes that can be done. I'm going to cover this "4x overstress" issue shortly.

As always, it depends. anchor point position, surface nature, slope, car weight distribution, steering position, driver mood, etc, etc, etc. Thanks for the video.
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC 6 месяцев назад
It does but with all that controlled for - well, not sure about driver mood - we see the result.

A quick thought about that Spanish Burton setup. What if you connect the return line of the winch to one recovery point and the line from second pulley to the opposite recovery point? Will it cancel that yaw effect or just decrease it to some degree?
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC 6 месяцев назад
It will cancel the yaw effect provided the forces are in equilibrium.

Hi Robert. Is it acceptable to use the bridle across both front recovery points to distribute the return load evenly and centrally?

I have a question, would those of us running winches with an offset drum notice any difference in the results you've posted?
@L2SFBC
@L2SFBC 6 месяцев назад
Yes, and your single-line pull would be out too. However this all assumes there is equal weight/grip left and right to begin with...
@cameronwood1994
@cameronwood1994 6 месяцев назад
@@L2SFBC So as my winch drum is offset to the left (good old Land Rover, eh?) what you're saying is by connecting it to the right-hand attachment point on my bumper it'd probably balance it out to a degree in my case?
