I liked the Philips Optical systems too. I don't think that seeking was any slower than any of the other players of that era. What they were, were noisy. You could hear that big old lens focusing and the meter movement style tracking drive served as a diaphragm to amplify the servo noises. The tracking system was just a really cool bit of maths working from just 4 sensors to produce EFM data out (can be seen on a scope as an eye patten), Tracking and Focus. Where as the Sony system used 6 Sensors. The Philips Optics never had many problems with sensors where as the Sony ones would always have sensor failure.
Agreed. I like the CDM-x series of transports. Always read any badly scratched CD without issue. Far more robust at error correction. The TDMXXXX DACs had a warm rich sound.
Great video! I have one myself and i use the digital coax out straight in to my DAC so basically just use it as a transport. Annoyingly it has one dead LED segment, any advice on what i could check to get this fixed would be greatly appreciated!
Just try reflowing the solder joints on the leds display and also follow the tracks back to the IC that run them. It could be the led is physically dead.
