Please, feel free to check out the trailer (fan-made, but still good) of Pulse before seeing this review:
• Pulse trailer
A malevolent intelligence in the electrical system is moving from house to house. It terrorizes the occupants by taking control of the appliances, either killing them or causing them to wreck the house in an effort to destroy it.
Then it travels along the power lines to the next house, and the terror restarts. Having thus wrecked one household in a quiet neighbourhood, the pulse finds itself in the home of a boy's divorced father whom he is visiting.
It gradually takes control of everything, badly injures the stepmother, and traps father and son, who must fight their way out.

cool review Matt, I've never heard of this film or if I did maybe see it once as a kid, I don't remember it. I will try and find this one cause of your high praise and it does sound interesting. The way you describe it as a good father/son story and that the stepmother and father are nice and not evil sounds refreshing. Thanks for reviewing little unknown gems, it gives us old school video hounds something to hunt for at the flea markets and used shops.

I remember watching this movie back in 89, I tought it was a well made film especially considering the budget they had. The special effects were very impressive too for the time. What the hell happened to Cliff De Young I always liked him.

I agree this is truly an underappreciated movie with a great premise, I wish it would get a propper DVD release with extras, the original trailer and commentary.

This movie, more than any other, terrified me as a kid. I think because it almost seemed realistic and you never actually see the “monster”.

This movie is what got me into my career in IT and Communications now. I have always been interested in electricity and electronics and from my 10 years in my career field I can say this, there are some interesting quirks with electricity and RF signals that leaves me scratching my head and makes you go back and re-watch this movie and ask the question, did the director actually know or experiance something strange? The part with the TV repairman was actually true, I have seen it with my own test equipment in a controlled test as well as in the field and far worse to the point I shut main power off for safety reasons. I have seen relays burned out like that, circuit breakers melted for no good reason. When you toss in wireless devices (radio , wifi, cellular) you really start to see weird crap. A residential gas fired water heater does not use electricity, especially in the 80's there were no efficient electronic gas control valves available for consumer use so the whole shower scene is complete rubbish. One thing about the movie that bugs me to this day is Where tit the pipe wrench come from towards the end of the movie? I get that it was obviously used to loosen a water pipe but how??

I just figure that a wrench was just lying around...just like other tools around one's house. Very interesting comments though, that's cool that it pretty much got you into a 10-year career.

Of course the shower scene is rubbish, however, why let that get in the way of the movie plot? But it is sort of annoying to those of us who actually have a clue as to how things work. That type of water heater, how in the world could get get so hot so fast? Normal water heaters can not even keep up with the demand for water. Too long of a shower would result in the water getting cold. Also, why in the world would a shower enclosure become jammed or locked preventing egress? Also, a warning of this movie that could be somewhat valid. The spooky sounds of a big empty house, can become exaggerated scary in the mind of a young child who really does not yet understand how things work. A young child left at home to watch himself, should have the phone numbers of trusted adults that he can call, in the event that something happens, or that he simply needs somebody to talk to about whatever is bothering him.

I believe it to be just a testament to a different time, where maybe more was expected of children, to put it very generally. Less technology and less to worry about. Believe this time period was the origination of the “latchkey kid”.

I couldn’t quantity how much this movie has influenced my life. I think that at the time, I couldn’t believe they made a movie that explored a subject matter that I had already found interesting, and had people around me in electrical and electrical-related fields who were influences as well. So it all just gelled and put me on a path that I’m still traveling. Praise Paul Golding, his introspection is genius imo. It was more like a documentary to me than a horror movie, lol.

watched this film last night and finished watching the ending this morning. Really good film. Reminds me of Poltergeist but in a good way. More proof that practically effects rule! I loved all the close ups of electrical appliances turning on and plastics burning it looked really cool.

Great review of a fantastic movie! I actually interviewed Mr. Golding recently about this film and he gave me the info on how the film got lost in studio politics. I will have the article up on my blog soon and will send you the link when it is up.

They want stuff with little dead kids' ghosts, or braindead gorefest "crazy serial killer" movies. They don't like to think, and hate suspense.
