Hello Mamas!
I’ve learned a lot about boosting breast milk supply through the highs and lows of nursing five babies. In this video, I explain how pumping after breastfeeding, even for just five minutes, can make things a lot less stressful for you in the long run! Stay tuned for more!
Breast Pumping
I found that by following this “pump after nursing” system, you stimulate your body to produce milk and store up a nice little stash of frozen breast milk, which can make providing your baby with breast milk a lot less stressful! Hope you enjoyed my video on breast pumping tips and that you’ll try it out yourself!
Have you tried to pump after nursing? Share your experiences below - I would love to hear what you have to say!

This is such a relief. My son is 18 days old and I was exclusively nursing until about 3 days ago. I was only making 1-2 oz each time I pumped (after nursing). I thought I will never make a bottle.This video put things in perspective for me. I guess I need to be patient and pump more so I can make a nice storehouse of milk. Thank you for sharing!

Hi! Thanks for the question. If you pump enough to freeze, it's always best to freeze it right away. However, you can refrigerate small portions throughout the day and then combine them to freeze later. So if you pump 1 ounce after a few different feedings you could refrigerate those and then freeze them together once you had a few ounces. What you should NEVER do is add warm, freshly pumped milk to already chilled milk (refrigerated or frozen). Hope that helps!

Great advice! My most successful breastfeeding journey out of 3 babies was when I followed this method. I was so glad I did because with this baby (second born) I developed post partum depression (2 months PP). It helped alleviate some stress in regards to feeding because I was still able to give my daughter my breast milk via bottle even though I wasn't currently producing enough. Thanks for sharing!!

One of the best pieces of baby care advice I ever received was to pump a bit of breast milk after each feed. Here's why this technique helped me so much and how to do it!

I just wanted to say thanks so much for all your videos on breastfeeding, especially this one! I have a 4 week old and breastfeeding is going amazing and I have a great freezer stash already thanks to this video. I had so much stress with my last baby after I went to work about not having enough milk for the next day and there's no way I will have that worry this time. Thanks so much!

I really love this idea. We have a couple of cousins that did this when they had their babies and they had a good storage and a better time breastfeeding their babies.

OH, one other thing, you can place the milk in the plastic bottle from your pump (buy more than one) throughout the day and at the end of the day, you can put the amount you have into one plastic freezing bag. This is what I did. xo melissa

My lactation consultant advised me this if I chose to pump. It's kinda tricking your body your baby wants more. And it will not interfere with your supply. I'm a stay at home mom. I dont feel the need to have to pump a lot and store away. But I do need to have something for when I'm away from baby.

HI Hazel, I don't know how old your baby is, but making sure you get a good latch is key so if the baby is not latching on and nursing from your breast directly, contact your doctor or a breastfeeding consultant and make an appointment right away so that they can help you figure out why your baby is not latching. Double check with them, but I would think that pumping regularly until your baby is successful latching on would be very important. I wish you the best of luck! xo Melissa

You need clean fresh parts each time. You can gather the milk in the fridge during the course of the day, and then freeze it all together at the end of the day. Or you can freeze it fresh if you have enough to do so (which is always a good idea). Sometimes its good to freeze smaller amounts b.c then when you defrost, it is easier.

thank God I saw this video. Because when I pump I only make 1 ounce after breastfeed. it's so frustrating to see that. I dont have any milk stack up because of this . Now I can really start pumping after each breast feed and still have saved supplies for future. Thank you so much for this video
@cloudmom

Hi Hazel -- I am so glad you are trying to breastfeed your baby. From what I have read, you can mix the breast milk from different sessions as long as it is still from that day -- i.e. you pumped it that day -- then you can store it up and freeze it that night in one batch. Double check with what the AAP says but this is what I did. xo Melissa

Melissa, I've learned so much from you, so please don't take this as criticism. I tried this method when my daughter was born 2 months ago and I ended up overproducing. By 5 weeks, I had almost 20 bags in the fridge and then I realized...I don't want to feed my baby previously frozen milk from several months ago. I want to feed her fresh milk. Frozen breastmilk loses many of its beneficial properties. Pumping too much creates an imbalance of foremilk and hindmilk. I also had a problem with overproduction. So, I had to quit stashing for now. I'll probably start a little bit before I go back to work, but I didn't find it helpful to pump a little after each feeding from the beginning. So this is just a message to those moms who want to try this method. We did, however, give my daughter a bottle of expressed milk once a day since week 3 or so (after the pediatrician gave us the okay) and that's been working really well.

Thanks for this info. I am 20 weeks pregnant with my first and really keen to breastfeed. I am interested in building up a good supply in my freezer as I get migraine headaches and sometimes have to take medication that can pass into breast milk. I would like to have a good supply in freezer for these times, so baby can still be breastfed and this looks like a good way to do it.

Hi, I'm wondering if it's suitable to gather all the breast milk pumped from the different time into a same bottle, or you just fridge the milk into a individual bottle until the amount is enough to put into a storage bag to freeze, will that action spoiled the breast milk?

Hi! Thanks for the videos :) You mentioned in the comment below "From what I have read, you can mix the breast milk from different sessions as long as it is still from that day -- i.e. you pumped it that day -- then you can store it up and freeze it that night in one batch". Do you keep the first session's milk in the fridge and gather into the bottle before freezing?
@cloudmom
@cloudmom 10 лет назад
Lizz CC exactly! But you don't want to free one day's milk with a prior days milk, rather you want to gather milk from a given day and freeze that. So work up to one bag's worth, but also if you have enough to freeze, you can freeze it right away as fresh is best. xo M

Hi! I was recommended to do this by a lactation consultant because my daughter is a "lazy eater" and won't drain me when she feeds. In fact she falls asleep no matter what I do, lol. I find that I'm starting to produce a bit more after each feeding, even at night which is GREAT because I've been having to supplement a little at night with formula. I will say though that it is TIME CONSUMING. I swear by the time I'm done feeding her and then getting her to do something else while I pump its time to feed her again....any advice on making this more time effective? Esp on days I need to run errands?

Hello. I find this idea brilliant, but I have a question. After nursing I pump, right? But do I freeze immediately that ounce of milk? or do I leave it there while I pump again so at the end of the day I have 6 ounces? Does the milk go to waste if I don't freeze it immediately? Teresa Vielman Hey there. :) I can answer that for you. Breastmilk can be kept refrigerated for about a week, and frozen for several months. I don't use this technique, but I always pump as much as I can and slowly work to fill up a bottle, keeping it refrigerated for several days. My milk hasn't gone bad at all!
