Punch Brothers perform Jimmie Rodgers' "Brakeman's Blues" on August 5, 2011 at Boarding House Park in Lowell, MA. Brought to you by Less Than Face Productions.
The Punch Brothers. I guess they've been around for a very long time (from the comments). But this is first time I've encountered them! Wow! They are Super! Bluegrass Perfection!! Thanks!
this is bluegrass reverberating. I will not walk away lightly...i will not die. bluegrass is evolving beyond this era. thank you for the great punch forward.
Wonderful stuff. Thanks for sharing. I was at that concert, and it was the best Punch Brothers show I had been too, by far. Just wondering, did you capture their cover of "Another New World?" I would do just about anything to relive that again. Cheers.
If you want traditional you shouldn't be watching Chris Thile. He is in his own world when playing. Sometimes I love it and others times don't. That much talent is always looking for something new and different. Like Mark O Connor.
I do know what you are saying. I have played fiddle for 30+ yrs. I started in TX old style contests and watched the greats like Morris Brothers, Soloman Brothers, TX Shorty, the greatest Benny Thommason, and others. The new generation seems to think that playing at breakneck speed is better. Ruins many songs in my opinion. Only a handful can retain the correct rhythm and bounce if you will at these speeds. But they are true artists and that is what makes them different.
I’m not complaining about Chris’ singing at all, but wonder for traditional tunes like this why they don’t let Critter sing lead from time to time-he’s just as facile with this kind of stuff.
The only other outsiders we let in were Doc, Tony, and Grishman. And only after they earned it. Seems this dude is worshipped by MSB(luegrass)M. Real bluegrass is ruff, rusty, and unshaved. Not techno digital. Thumbs down.
As an actual southerner, i can tell you I think he's doing fine without your approval. Funny you came here asking about him, but seem to already know all about him. Smells like a weird troll. And it's Grisman, no H.
LISTEN TO THAT FELLER SING!! Gosh, can he hold a note...so accurate also. If we could understand him more of the time, he'd be perfect! Noam is a consummate master but I'm longing for a more simple and musical approach, like he used to have; he's out-thought and out-rolled himself on here. Too much jazz.
I was going to leave a negative response but then I realized it's coming from a player I respect. Personally, they can go off on whatever tangents they want, I'm still smiling throughout. Hope your family puts out more music, together or individually. Happy New Year!
Really? Following Noam's lead break you thought they were all sticking traditional? It was almost as if Noam was daring him to go crazy improv after his own lead.
