The problem appears to me to be more some weird judgment of Thile going on in the comments. What’s the issue exactly? He didn’t take any mandolin solos - allowed the other mandolinist space. He sang well, he played supportive mandolin. Huh? What’s the Thile bashing all about? He’s one of the best musicians of his generation. As a mandolinist he’s peerless. As a musician playing with other musicians I always find him gracious, respectful and humble.
In Australia we call this the Tall Poppy Syndrome. Gotta cut brilliant people back down to size. Chris is a natural leader. Perhaps that is counter to the culture of acoustic Americana but essential to advance the craft. His Live From Here platform catalysed the entire genre. He’s a genius, which I guess makes him a target in today’s world.
I'm no musician but I do believe ALL the people up there are very talented. I have not been able to see the American Acoustic tour live - but have been following it on youtube and appreciate all the videos people have put up. My observation on Chris (who is very talented) which has been the case in many of the videos, is I feel that he insists on being the center of attention - even when he is not soloing. He tends to take the how do I say "the dramtaics" a little to far. The body gesturing is distracting at times.
