One of the most fun ways to find and catch GIANT bass is by flipping a heavy texas rig into grass, also known as "Punching"! This technique is super complicated to learn, however, so it is my goal for this video that you become better at fishing grass for bass today! SUBSCRIBE if you like bass fishing tips, and want to learn more about how to fish grass!

@G8AR
@G8AR 3 года назад
I use both hands when flipping which was something I developed over time without purposely knowing I was doing it. I really don’t find there is that much of a delay since I set the hook using either hand. I will admit there have been a few times that I have missed strike due to that split second delay, but usually those situations occurred when I had taken my attention away from he flip in search of a new spot to flip to. I have even had larger bass almost pull my rod from my hand when pitching into pencil reeds. The another very important tip is to pay full attention to your pitch until you have brought it out of the water and are getting ready to flip to a new location.

Thanks for your videos man. I like how in depth you are with your videos. I been doing it wrong for so long even though punching is something I've done most of the time. As a matter of fact most of my best Bass have been punching with senkos and less than a 1/4 oz weight. I've lost so much 16Lbs line and hooks because of it. I have a heavy duty rod specifically for that and it has been sitting on my rod rack for about a year. Time for a better set up.

Hey Tyler. The grass matts in my pond are so thick that I end up dragging huge clumps of grass every time I retrieve my punching rig. It takes long and it's not very efficient. Is there any way to avoid that? I have a very streamlined presentation (1oz tungsten flipping weight w/ a texas rigged beaver style bait).
@TylersReelFishing
@TylersReelFishing 4 года назад
In that scenario, I would just say to find some different mats to flip. I am assuming that the grass you are fishing is not actually a mat, but is more of just a solid clump. The fish would not be in those anyways since there is no habitat underneath for them to live in. I could be wrong, but that sounds like what it is to me

6.5.1-7.5.1 gear ratio reels are better for flipping and punching mats. The higher gear ratios like 8.0.1 or higher don't have the torque or ie winch power to get bass out as easy.
@TylersReelFishing
@TylersReelFishing 2 года назад
Ehhh maybe older cheaper reels. These nowadays are strong enough, and a fast gear ratio allows me to make many many more presentations than your slow one
@rjuniorwj

@@TylersReelFishing Well I use A newer 7.5.1 that has 24lbs drag. 8.0.1 and higher gear ratio reels, really aren't designed to be flipping in heavy cover. If it works for you that is all that matters.

@johncoleman7308 4 года назад
I’m left handed and use a right hand retrieve. I taught myself so I just did what felt best. It made more sense to keep the rod in my dominant hand. Doesn’t take near as much coordination to reel the handle so I use my dummy hand for that 🤷‍♂️
@michaelkuech
@michaelkuech 3 года назад
Same. I just don't like switching hands. Right-handed, grew up as a kid with a right-handed spincaster, but when I got my first spinning reel, I had to change it to the left. It feels so much more natural to cast and play with the lure with my right without having to swap. Getting used to reeling it in with my left took all of 5 minutes. Baitcasters feel even more natural with my right, and it makes no sense to swap after casting.

Best grass is hyrdrilla? Flip some milfoil and you might change your mind about that
@TylersReelFishing
@TylersReelFishing 4 года назад
No doubt that milfoil is a fun grass to fish and flip! BUT if you look at the top lakes in the country, one thing is constant: Hydrilla. It grows the fastest out of any invasive grass, and is statistically shown to produce the best habitat for a predator ecosystem
@ThatSB
@ThatSB 2 года назад
Youre bringing your bait in so quick you arent gonna give a big bass time to move to it. You do it right when showing the movement techniques... but in your little section on how to go about flipping, you literally are coming off like you should be throwing the bait in for 1/4 second and ripping it out. Maybe should have explained you were exagerating
@TylersReelFishing
@TylersReelFishing 2 года назад
With punching, The bait should be in the area for a max of 4 to 5 seconds, which I showed. Punching is about creating a reaction, not enticing a fish to swim from a long ways away. In thick vegetation, a fish most likely wouldn’t even know it was there if the fish was a few feet away from where I flipped. That is why you have to make many repetitive flips throughout the grassy mat
