Yes that's true what I'm saying is that in that story it would have been nice to see a meme or two for balance.

That apology video is why I'm a complete fan. They knew how to make her dangerous and committed to the bit for her. Punchline to me is closer to "Ghostmaker" where they're overall a "better" version of that character in a way.

Oh yes, I have been thinking the very same thing! I haven't read the comics themselves, but feel very well informed thanks to Sasha's splendid coverage :) but I have the distinct feeling that that may well be her end game. In many ways, I find her to be much, much scarier than the Joker himself. Not that Joker isn't still terrifying when done right but he is, it could be argued, a bit played out? So having her take him out and take his place as the Clown of Crime seems like it /could/ be a good move in the offing. Only time will tell, though, and until then, I'm content to get to see Sasha's continuing coverage.

@@ShauriCheshire Yeah, that concept will really work in her favor. She could be more like a cutthroat version of Amanda from the Saw franchise. Instead of idolizing her mentor she could disregard him and usurp his role.

Interesting. I think on some level she does admire him though. He's her ideal. So I reckon it would hurt her if he never truly takes her seriously as a "partner" or a villain.

I agree that's how I hope her legacy goes because from that first outing she showed she really isn't one to deal with Joker's BS. Her doing this is more so proving to herself that now she can improve.

Don't know if this applies to Punchline but I've mused on a villain in a similar position to hers, where the supposedly loyal evil servant starts with "To benefit the Bad Boss, I need to do things in the shadows without him knowing" to "Bad Boss doesn't know what's good for him. I need to take control" and escalates until finally "Oops, I accidentally killed him. Guess I'm in charge now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯."

I don't have a problem with this too much because Joker has managed to hold his own against Batman pretty frequently despite not having a lot of training himself. I actually prefer when martial artist characters are reminded that their techniques can only get them so far against enemies that are either stronger or are simply dirtier fighters. I do think Punchline's skills should be toned down a bit though. I don't have a problem with her standing up to Nightwing over time, but matching him right at the start might be a little much.

@@VladyO I liked the Joker with dreadlocks and red eyes. He was a decent fighter and utilised weapons.

I mean she really is written to try taking this place when depending the medium, we still can have sidekick Harley, so it was a weird option in first place doing this, they should have taken punchline in a whole different perspective, tho the only original one would be kid helper and even that one is debatable

Great point. I agree on the hints that, while she's clever and dangerous, she does also take herself far too seriously, and for all her competency she is also an edgy college drop out. Exploring this side could give the much needed weaknesses and flaws that she needs to be a more dynamic character, rather than too good at everything. It would remove the Mary Sue ish tendencies the character has veered towards sometimes. I think her dynamic with Joker is really crucial here, because he should not take her as seriously as she takes herself. It could be an interesting dynamic if we have Punchline taking herself very seriously etc while Joker clearly is just amused by it all. Moments in Joker War showed this tbh. It would be good to give her a reality check at some point re. her significance to Joker I think.

@@MidnightIsolde yes! And I think that this would make for a good "modern youth" villain in the way that she's cynical and innovative but also sociopathic and way too full of herself. I hate the trend of youth in comics either being amazingly smart and special or lazy and conceited. I think this is a good merging of the two.

Yeah, I definitely think Punchline is a better villain for Bluebird than any of the other Batfam--there's more of a personal vendetta there with Harper's brother that raises the stakes.

With Joker, he can go toe to toe with them because he's *completely* nuts and is the kind of fighter who will let you beat him semiconscious just to get close enough to put a knife in your ribs. Even when you win against someone like that you don't look or feel like it. Harley isn't a fighter and it's shown (or at least it used to be, IDK about currently), but she does manage to prolong her fights by being a world class gymnast though. And half the batfam takes it easy on her. But in the end she still gets her @$$ handed back to her in a Bat shaped box. Punchline is waaay too capable for what she is. Although I could see her repurposing some of Joker's old "gags" to supplement not being a "trained ninja from childhood". But she's not "athletic" and she's not psychotic. Her being able to go any time with anybody but Babs when she was still in her chair (even that's an @$$ *punching*) is a bit laughable.

Also the idea that she could win in a physical fight with Harley is absurd. Sure she's younger and by DCU standards Harley isn't a fighter, but between fighting the batfam & being the the Joker's punching bag for so long, she can take a hit and has plenty of tricks herself. So *that's* the point where I "lost the Punchline"...

@@nicholashodges201, agreed and perhaps more importantly it is quite possible to pose a problem for Gotham or to the BatFam without being able to outfight a ninja. Not every member of the Rogue's gallery needs to pose a physical threat. Punchline could pose a threat to the Batfam's secret identities, popularity or reputations without being able to throw an, er, punch.

@@nicholashodges201 Punchline being a competent fighter is one of the main draws of her character, for me. Because as much experience as Joker and Harley have fighting, rarely are either pictured as super threatening fighters -- dangerous *people* yes, but dangerous because they're unpredictable, evasive, and willing to fight unfairly. They've gotten depictions that veered off of that, but in a tier list of Batman villains who are dangerous in a fair, 1-v-1 brawl...they're like C's? I don't really like what they've done with Punchline so far, but making her genuinely dangerous in a fight...kinda like that part, actually. Also, and I say this with love and respect: being physically abused does not make you a better fighter. I have been there, all it gave me was trauma, which is...not a tactical advantage, in my experience.

Not to sound dismissive or rude to the people who created the character. But as it currently stands, it appears as if that’s most of her appeal. At least for now. People aren’t fans of every other aspect of her character. Such as her seemingly being able to go toe to toe against much more experienced characters

@@CoOlKyUbI96 oh, i've been following the Casually Comics videos on this so i understand at least a little bit about her--i'm actually not really a comics guy (most of my appreciation of it is secondhand, especially through movies and series, and from there via channels like this). i'd obviously want to read the actual comics myself first before passing any judgment on Punchline as a character, but just from what i get from Casually Comics and elsewhere she definitely feels like a GOOD current-day addition to Batman's rogues, whereas alot of others that have been introduced over the years feel gimmicky to the point of becoming dated immediately and for the most part they just become one-note joke characters

I think Punchline's look feels a bit too edgy, too tryhard, IMHO. Not sure what would make it better though

I'm kind of disappointed that they are rebooting the dc comics continuity again next year but not as much as I might've been if the stories across almost the entire DC line hadn't gone to pot quality wise shortly after the debut of this character i mean they started to reform harley Quinn which plenty of people have wanted for years now take the riddler he was reformed completely into an honest citizen to the point where Bruce entrusted Gotham's protection and safety to him so he could rest and recover from the strain of infinite crisis in 2005 and go spend some leisure time with his adopted sons but then in 2011 they rebooted the continuity for the new 52 and somehow they they thought that it was a good idea to not only make him a supervillain again but to make him more heartless and violent of a villain than he ever was before being reformed but since they already went to pot in regards to the quality of stories in most of their books they will probably ruin Harley's gradual reformation if they haven't already done so (I stopped reading the current comics over a year ago)before the entire line is rebooted next year so they probably won't get a chance to do that with harley Quinn like they did with the riddler at the start of the new 52!!!

Agreed. They need to balance out her abilities better. She's also very over confident in herself and I think whilst she's not stupid and knows the Joker is a manipulator, he is her idol and inspiration to be an evil villain. So, she wants to be considered on par with him due to her ego, but would be a least somewhat blindsided if he never ever truly takes her seriously. To me, everything about her characterisation points to that being a great annoyance to her. Whilst she has competencies, there is something rather tryhard about her. Even her costume has this very DIY look to it, rather than being as sleek as other villains, which gives the impression that she is a stan for the villains of Gotham, specifically the Joker, and wants to be like that. This is scary and she's dangerous, but it does mean there's something a bit desperate and a weak point about her. I think some people are desperate for a pure evil female villain, and look for this in Punchline and so want to make her even more overpowered. That's a mistake. Punchline is genuinely evil and not an anti hero nor a tragic case like Harley, but she has an Achilles heel as all well written characters should, and isn't the character imo to make an independent female villain as her concept is too tied to Joker for that to ever work.

I don't think there's any real connection between this and Dark Crisis because DC has no real continuity anymore. All that's left is a confusing mess.

Why aren't we selling the title "Joker's new Girlfriend" then everyone can be Punchline-ish for 15 minutes of pseudo fame and probably a cheaply made action figure. DC and establish titles need that team up. Sell squares of a closed down asylum to be extra edgy, even sharpen the edges of the frame for maximum edge. Who hasn't wanted "Joker's new girlfriend" on their airline tickets? What could go wrong?
