Also Soldier is a term much older than the US military or any organized armed force. The word is originated from Latin "Sal" that means salt, because salt was super precious back in the day and it was used to pay Roman legionnaires, so them they became "soldados" someone that works for salt. So doesn't matter the country you are, or the branch, someone that fights for and military organization is technically a soldier.

There's no problem in calling a Marine a soldier, its the official title of your job. And it's an all encompassing term, regardless what branch or country you hail from. The only time you don't call a Marine a Marine is if he's been dishonorably discharged.

Neal Brown okay first off, if I didn't love the Marine Corps as much as I do I would not be enlisting into it someday. I admire my damn military. I admire military history and all that it has to offer. There's a reason Marines are known as Soldiers of the Sea. The definition of soldier is someone who serves in an army. Not THE Army. As a whole, our Armed Services is our army. It's the collective of land troops that we can consider as soldiers. A recruitment poster from 1866 recruited men to be soldiers, and never once stated them as Marines. Now, in all honesty I would not like to be called a Army Soldier. I want to be a Marine and nothing more. But in a broader sense, Marines are soldiers "of the Sea" not Soldiers. I'll never once refer to myself as a soldier if I am blessed with making it in because being a Marine is so much more prideful. Being a Marine is something no one can call themselves unless they're Marines. The term Soldier is used to describe a lot of things, even outside of the Army. But you won't find that crap happening with the word Marine. A Marine, I hate to say, can even be considered a Sailor. Being a Marine is something I'll cherish. Being a Soldier is something so common and it's very rarely taken with as much honor as the title 'Marine' is... So by now you'll get the idea of what I want to do with my life. I can get chewed up and spit out but at the end of the day I'll still be informed on soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines. It is definitely not a common practice for a Marine to say "yes, I'm a soldier" and I personally won't. But if a civilian comes up to me asking if I'm a soldier or whatever I'll gladly say "I'm a soldier of the seas" or simply a Marine. Because to be fair, the public knows so little the difference between the branches and I think that every Civilian and student should be informed of our diverse military. So that maybe someday people can immediately tell the difference between those damn fine MARPAT cammies versus crap such as the Airmen Battle Uniform. Future-Oorah!
