One of the greatest Power anthems in rock history was actually sort of written by this legendary band’s fans! Queen and We Will Rock You was inspired by the band’s fans and the band wanting to include them. The legendary singer/guitar duo of Freddie Mercury and Brian May wrote a song that would unite the masses and It began as live improvisation and even though it has one of the biggest driving beats ever it doesn’t actually contain drums! It’s all natural. once you see this song story you’ll never hear the song the same way again… Finally when Queen was recording it, one of the most infamous bands in history kept interrupting them and their frontman made fun of their Freddie Mercury but he would have the last laugh creating a song that would blow everyone away the story is next.

Queen was on their A Day at the Races Tour in 1977. The tour was going extremely well, as the band continued to elevate their stature to one of the biggest rock bands in the world. With a magnetic and powerful frontman who lit up the stage by the name of Freddie Mercury… Fans that went to see Queen perform on that tour were lively & passionate about the concerts. It was HUGE sold-out tour.
But…there was one particular show that stood out from the rest, at Bingley Hall in Stafford, England, where the audience was so emotionally involved in the performance, the band was completely taken aback. On that magical night inside Bingley Hall... Queen did their encore... and then went off stage. The band was used to the fans cheering after an encore- begging the band to return to the stage and give them more.
But, instead of the usual clamoring, the entire audience began to sing to the band….in unison….”You’ll Never Walk Alone, ”the wondrous Show tune from Rodgers & Hammerstein that was used in the 1956 musical Carousel and adopted as the theme song for sporting teams in Europe & special events throughout the world. The display of affection for the group from the fans singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone" absolutely stunned the 4 band members. From that enthralling experience, lead guitarist & co-founder Brian May & frontman Freddie Mercury knew that it was time to create a song the fans could participate in. A song that would unite the audience, and the band as one.
Overcome by what had happened in Stafford, Freddie & Brian, began to follow the inspiration from the crowd, and they each came up with a song, independent from one another, that would become transcendent sing-a-long anthems. It wasn’t a competition, it was something that two iconic musicians felt compelled to do. They felt it would motivate to reach their end goal.
Freddie came up with “We are the Champions,” and Brian invented “We Will Rock You.” We’ll do a feature soon on “We are the Champions,” but this is about“We Will Rock You.”

I have a "home alone" voice, too, and I love to turn up the volume and sing (and dance if I feel like it) as if my life depends on it to certain songs. I'll be 60 this year, and I still find it to be one of the most life affirming thing about my favorite songs. I have several hundreds of them at this point in my life, and I keep adding to the list. It probably won't surprise you to hear that many of them are Queen songs - some of them nowhere near making it to the point where they're well known.

I first heard Queen as a hyperactive 12 year old who couldn’t sit still for a second. My late dad used to tell people “he was running around as usual until they came on tv and suddenly he actually stopped and sat down”. They, were Queen, the show was the UK’s favourite music show Top Of The Pops and the song was Seven Seas of Rhye. My love affair started there and has continued since. I saw them three times with Freddie, 79, 82 & 86 and twice with Adam Lambert (he is fantastic but obviously no Freddie) yet they still brought the house down. I went to see them in my home city of Glasgow in 2022 with my 23 year old son and 19 year old daughter, who are both ardent concert goers, and they agreed Queen put on the best show they’d ever seen.

First Queen song I heard grabbed me. I was working a job that kept me from music but one day I heard Killer Queen. That was it... I bought every album and attended three of their concerts at the Forum in LA. I am now 74 yrs old and when people walk into my home office I always hear a quiet "wow" for all the pics and memorabilia I have of queen. 3 signed albums and the ceramic Freddie Mercury statue always get comment as well as the poster of Freddie from the memorial concert. Most can't believe that at my age Queen still is foremost in my music collection. All four of them were genius, how could I let them go?

So all I know is their records were being shared by fans in muggy upstate South Carolina in the mid 1970s, and I did hear Killer Queen on the radio occasionally there, and thought they sounded amazing.

I dare say he was every bit as good on keys as Brian May was on guitar. As an older Millennial, my first Queen experience was through the movie Highlander and the song "Princes of the Universe". I remembered when Freddie died in 1991. The next year Wayne's World came out and I was introduced to Bohemian Rhapsody. My Dad also had a few Queen albums on vinyl kicking around. I just grew up on a lot of 70's rock in general.

@joek600 we're in this weird cultural overlap between Gen X and Millennial. I was born in 85 and my ex-spouse in 86, and I always had a hard time connecting with his, well, everything. I connect more with X because my mother was a very early X and my childhood very much reflected that.

Queen is such a deservedly iconic band that I can't think of a thing to say that hasn't likely been said, but I _will_ say that, just like practical effects in movies, the low-tech way they recorded the foot-stomoing percussion still holds up better then the sterile, digital sounds produced today. It's like the difference between cashmere and silk. Also We Will Rock You is my 82 year old, church deacon dad's ringtone on his phone in honor of my son who passed away in 2008 (he had muscular dystrophy) It always amuses him when his ring tone surprises people 😊

My first exposure to Queen was while working in Nashville. I heard this song over the sound system that forced me to just stand there and soak it in. Upon arriving home I excitedly told my wife I’d heard a song like no other ever. It was about Beelzebub and Galileo. Of course she just laughed- “That’s Queen! Bohemian Rhapsody!” Her joy in sharing that has been a precious moment ever since. She just passed away this month after 52 years of marriage from severe dementia. Her Majesty - My Queen!

I imagine there are folks who have no idea "We Will Rock You" was written by anyone, let alone the rock band Queen. They hear it and assume it's just always been there. The perfect sport's anthem. This is one of those songs you remember where you first heard it. I was nearly six years old and a total Kiss fan. I wasn’t into Queen. My next door neighbour and best friend at the time got it on a 45 and I can clearly remember him putting it on in his bedroom and us both listening intensely. When he put it on the next time (and multiple times after that) we were stomping and clapping until his mum came in to get us to settle down.

Love of my life…it always made me cry, when Freddie sang it. After he died, Brian May would play the guitar, and have a screen up of Freddie singing it…and I cried and cried and cried…for him, for me…it’s such a beautiful song, and his voice is so sweet! And I love how Brian included Freddie, by playing his guitar, and letting Freddie sing. He wasn’t singing that song to us, he was singing it for a personal reason! Freddie didn’t die, he’s living within us, and there are new generations who will appreciate Queen, and Freddie…forever! I rarely cry when somebody famous dies, but I’ve cried 4 times…1. Freddie. 2. I was in the Navy and at sea when I first heard this song. It was not a recording of Queen performing this song that I heard, but an African American shipmate from the inner city singing it. A few years later I saw Queen in concert. It was the first rock concert I went to and to this day was the best concert experience of my life. To be among over 10,000 people all singing , clapping and stomping their feet was amazing. I went because a friend had an extra ticket. She was freaking out when she heard a teenage boy fell off the top of the parking structure at the Dio concert. Well, I was as wild as they came. Like that's literally the adjective people used to describe me: Wild. My mother thought for sure it was me. Luckily, it was not. But I think she aged a few years that night. When I hit 30, which she predicted I would never live to see, she said Denis. Every one of the grey hairs on ny head are from you. But at the same time you kept me young. My job was to do the dusting. So while I did my job I turned on my parents’ big console radio/turn table/8 track player. I remember turning the radio from AM to FM and immediately hearing “Is this the real life…” I stopped and listened to the song and became a life long Queen fan. The very next song was “Come Sail Away” by Styx. After both songs were done I looked up and mom was standing there. She walked over and turned the radio down and told me to get back to dusting. No worries though, over the years my mom became a Queen fan. A few years ago I took Mom to see a Queen+Adam Lambert concert and we were really close to the stage. As Brian May finished the last note of the “We will rock you” solo, he turned, looked at my mom and smiled. I looked at my mom and there were tears in her eyes.

As a teen, that movie was cool, but the music was what made those few hours into something awesome. Took me some time to investigate (no internet then, just a very knowledgeable record store clerk ) and find out that there was never a movie soundtrack released. These were some of my favorite bands, Metallica, Guns and Roses, Bowie etc. I knew Queen of course but never really gave it much thought. I was only 14 when the concert for life happened. I was so enthralled that I grabbed a vcr tape and just recorded over whatever was on it, figuring I would deal with the punishment later as it wasn't a blank. Bowie came out with Annie Lennox to sing under pressure. Amazing. Axel Rose came out to sing Bohemian Rhapsody with Elton John. My head exploded. How can that be? Fan ever since. If I could go back in time to one concert, one musical moment in Rock... it's a tough question that I often go back and forth on because it's either Janis at Woodstock or Queen at live aid.

Queen might just be the greatest band ever when it came to that live presence. A whole song dedicated to the fans playing it with along with them says so much about that sentiment. Cheers

Only Queen could inspire an audience like they did. What an amazing story behind this iconic song. I think the solo is the closest thing to musical perfection we have ever heard. Brian May is one of a handful of guitarists you instantly recognize when he is playing...he's so great. Even the album cover is phenomenal. Queen was my favorite bands to listen to as I delivered my newspapers as a kid in the 70's. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada🍁

My first memory of Queen -- my sister collected 45s in the early 1970s and I would sneak into her room and take them and play them on my record player. One of the 45s was Killer Queen. I didn't understand all the lyrics but the sound of the vocals was distinctive. Same thing with Bohemian Rhapsody. I remember thinking that couldn't have been the same band who did We Will Rock You/We are the Champions several years later when I next remember hearing of Queen A few years after that, my soccer team won the city junior high championship, and we went for pizza and a kid played this song one a boombox - we felt like we ruled the world.

My first introduction to Queen was in the 70's. I worked in a lab with a technician, who went to their parties in London, and introduced me musically to the group. I never actually met them, which might have been just as well. I am as musical as a brick, but I still love their music.

I remember being shocked when I got the 45 and saw that they were two different songs. I thought that they were one song that took a major detour half way through having only heard them on the radio. The two songs played together have always been my favorite Queen songs.

"Master" Freddie Mercury is undeniably one of those very rare artists who, even if you give them a "D -" quality title, will manage to transform it into an "A+" title. As the titles created by Queen were already, basically, of very high quality, Freddie's work pushes these creations to "stratospheric" levels as with this pure diamond

I was about 19 y/o when Flash Gorden came out. My boyfriend took me to see it, and I felt the same way you did! I was obsessed with that song! I made my boyfriend take me back to see the movie 8 more times just to hear it! Lol! I was a die hard Queen fan after that! Still am, of course. The movie was fun too - very corny, but I love that kind of stuff. I love your channel! Another great video!! Thank you for doing this - watching your videos is a trip back in time for me. And going back to the 70s & 80s is a trip I would take a 1-way ticket to in a heartbeat!!! God bless!!

1973, I was 13 and just getting into RnR. I was in a record shop when the owner was unpacking new material when he stopped, looked at me, then, flung QUEEN 1 at me, saying, "Here’s one you’ll like." Being a sensitive, artsy kinda kid, I knew what he was telling me. I bought it anyway. I got home and started listening. I was liking what I was hearing. Suddenly, with only 17 seconds remaining on side one, my jaw dropped and my heart skipped a beat. I finished that side and immediately placed the needle in the groove of that track. Then, it happened again. Gobsmacked! That voice! The warble of the tremolo of the single word Go-oooh-oooh, in the line "Son of heaven set me free and let me go.", was magnificently majestical. That was 50 years ago. My Fairy King was the first Queen song I heard twice. It was the song that cemented the band to my soul.

I am always fascinated with how the true rock pioneers developed the sounds they wanted on an album. Before all the digital mumbo jumbo. Using the acoustics of a room, amps, microphone placement, etc. to get what was in their head onto a tape. Brian May, Brian Wilson and the like. I would definitely like more of that technical side. To me, some of that is as important as the inspiration for the song itself.

The first I heard of Queen is also the first time I saw them live. In May of 1974 my friend Caroline's father bought tickets for her and five of her friends to see Mott the Hoople at the Uris Theater in NYC. It was for her 16th birthday. He flew us into JFK and we stayed in some big hotel with he and his wife for two nights then went to their place on Long Island. Memorable trip for girls from small towns (Ohio for me). The whole works, limo, private jet, fancy hotel and a shopping spree. Anyway, we were there to see Mott but Queen was first on stage. Most of the audience hadn't heard of them. That changed quickly. To say the least the entire place was mesmerized. I don't remember breathing. Mott finally hit the stage and really killed it but all we talked about was Queen. Next day we got Caroline's parents to take us to a record store and we all bought Queen and Queen II. I still have all of original Queen albums in my collection (lost count at 2700 albums). If I had to name a favorite song... Hmmmm, it would be either Killer Queen or The Fairy Feller's Master-stroke ( a rather obscure album track).

Killer Queen was the first Queen song that I remember hearing on the radio. I believe it was in late 1974. The lyrics, so clever, and what a great tune! A short time later, I heard Flick of The Wrist and I became a Queen fan.

I was on a soccer team in 1977 and our team was number one in the state (granted, there were hardly any teams playing then where we lived 😃). We immediately commandeered We Are The Champions to sing after games and We Will Rock You before games, to psyche out the opponents

When I was a child, I remember when John Lennon and Elivis died and how profoundly sad the people around me were. I knew both artists and their music, but I couldn't understand the grief of the adults around me. Years later, when Freddy died, I cried,, and understood that grief. I had no idea how much me meant to me.

I was a young child when I first became aware of Queen, with "We Will Rock You" and "We are the Champions". They had just been released as singles, and all the older kids around us were playing their records/singles all the time. It's been a love affair with their music ever since.

I don't know for sure that it was the FIRST Queen song that grabbed me like it did, but '39, off A Night At The Opera, is surely one of the most beautiful I have ever heard. I think it was because I was (also) (am) a SciFi geek, I actually understood it. I felt like it was kind of like an in joke, a secret message, and you had to know something more to really know what the song was about. So, yah. There it is. A song about love and loss and time dialation, about getting older but not as quickly as everyone you ever knew, and saving the world but not the world you left behind. Only Dr. Brian May could have done it.

I think the music is what made me love the Flash Gordon movie too, both when I first saw it back when it was new & when I revisited it as an adult with a friend of a similar age to me in recent years. I can't imagine it without the iconic music! Queen stands in its own category, I think.

I still remember the first time I heard this song -- this was while We Are The Champions was becoming a big AM radio hit. I was 12 years old, on a NY city bus, on the way home from school, and at the time all I knew of Queen was Bohemian Rhapsody and WATC. Some older kid had a boom box at the back of the bus, and blasted this song. I was like, who is that? It sounds awesome! And when the song went almost seamlessly into WATC, I realized, holy crap, that's Queen! Been a huge fan of the band ever since.

It's kind of funny, I was introduced to Queen by accident. I made a trip to my local record shop; I had just heard 'Liar' by Three Dog Night, and asked for the album with that song on it. They said 'here ya go' and handed me Queen's debut album. That record shop was where I discovered so many wonderful bands, so much great music. When I put the record on, I thought "This isn't the same song... but this band is AWESOME!!!" From then on I was hooked on Queen's music. I remember the first time the local radio station played Bohemian Rhapsody... I was awestruck, listening over a transistor radio in my high school art class. I could hardly believe what I was hearing! We Are the Champions was my graduating class' theme song back in 1978. And of course, the band's contributions to the 'Highlander' soundtrack are among my all-time favorite music. My band Ironwood Rain contracted the licensing to record a cover of the song '39 (from Night at the Opera) on our first CD. So many great memories and connections with Queen and their music. I am grateful for the 'happy accident' that introduced me to Queen. Thanks, Professor - your channel brings me great connections to classic music, and much joy, time and time again. Keep up the good work. Three chords and the truth, brother. :)
