The pupillary light reflex is part of the control mechanism that adjusts the amount of light that enters the eye. Rods and cones, and intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells detect the amount of light falling on the retina and send axons within the optic nerve and optic tract to the olivary pretectal nucleus in the midbrain. Connections to the Edinger-Westphal nuclei on both left and right sides trigger preganglionic parasympathetic neurones that send axons within the oculomotor nerve to the ciliary ganglion. Postganglionic parasympathetic neurones run from here within short ciliary nerves to the sphincter pupillae muscle in the eye. When bright light enters one eye both eyes react through this reflex to constrict the pupil and limit the amount of light entering the eye.

'Most people think of the Edinger-Westphal nucleus as the parasympathetic innervation of the eye' ... Sir, you are a true comedian. Most people don't know, and furthermore, wouldn't care, of any of those things; not until something serious goes off-track. Exactly why we need educated healthcare and medical people. Thanks for all these lectures.

Really interesting, thanks Sam. Can i make a request? Mum suffered a stroke in the part of her brain that processes vision last year, and lost the sight on the right side of both eyes as a result. Interestingly it also affected medium term memory, comprehension, and her ability to process colours for a while (Red was Green, Blue was Yellow etc) but that came back after a few weeks. Could you make a video (or maybe you've made one?) that explains how the Brain processes sight? I've done some research, but nothing i've found compares to the quality of your videos and your ability to connect with non medical people. Thanks.

This might help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-inT7s7pY6bo.htmlsi=Q3Smfrx1HckwJXfB It's about the visual pathways, which explains some of this. It doesn't talk about processing vision though, which is a big and fun topic.
