Trolencio, my puppy class trainer suggested the same technique as in the video, but she pointed out that some puppies are spurred on by a high pitch squeal, in which case to rather use a gruff bark or growl sound, i.e. more like the pup's mum would use, rather than a litter mate. But it's not about being a 'stronger' or 'weaker' position. Don't buy into the dominance rhetoric that has become so popular.
@user-xx7pg3vw9k

Peter Stuart Ummm, but yeah...it is relevant. My 6 week old female 10 ounce puppy has decided that she wants to be the boss of the 14 POUND older terrier ans she chases him, barks at him, etc...while she acts opposite with the 12 year old feamle dog by rolling over and trying to gain approval. Dominance traits are REAL.
@dreampiper
@dreampiper 4 года назад
Depends on the dog and sometimes even the breed. Some need an assertive dominant owner, while others are fine being submissive.I think a better statement would be that not every method works the same for every dog and it's good to try what works for your pup.

Yay for Victoria, lol at the people who think she knows nothing about dogs. I like to think of myself not as a boss but like a nice teacher who is to be respected and listened to :-) sometimes it is necessary to combine many people's methods to form your own, and having a dog that has been allowed to get away with too much needs different handling including some correction to set boundaries.

I think its more on the fact that most people wont yelp as its a sign of weakness. Theirs other approaches that are a lot better than yelping.
@ktknievel
@ktknievel 10 лет назад
We've been doing exactly this, but our puppy grabs clothes and skin and grips on. We make the yelp and have also tried the "Tchhhh" that other trainers say work and she still latches on. We do the "time out" by ignoring her, but can't walk away because she still has US in her grip, she does hate being ignored, so that part is working. It IS playful, no signs of aggression. But after 5 days she is still mouthing just as hard though. 3 month old German Shepherd mix from a rescue.

@@Anita_LaurenWere you able to find a solution? Mine is doing the same thing and nothing is working. I can’t even tell you how many techniques I’ve tried. She’s now 14 weeks old and is getting BIG. (Great Pyrenees so a giant breed , and we are desperate to stop this before she’s too big.)
@Anita_Lauren
@Anita_Lauren Год назад
@@SoulShiner1115 hi yes! We found a professional trainer to help us. We use a metal prong collar and gave him a hard yank and a “no!” when he used to bite us. I’ll be honest it was unpleasant for me at first because I didn’t want to cause my pup any pain, but our trainer said it would only need to be a few yanks before he learned for good. And he did, so thankfully we never have to use it anymore! I was really opposed to the prong collar at first, but my trainer said that if he keeps biting into adulthood like that that he would either get put down or cause serious damage to someone (because he is also a big dog) so a few yanks on him seemed well worth it at that point. Hope that helps!
@SoulShiner1115
@SoulShiner1115 Год назад
@@Anita_Lauren Thank you for replying. Yeah. I’ve been looking at e-collars or prong collars, but the idea is scary to me. I have to do something though. She’s growing fast and my son is getting scared to play with her because she plays so rough and bites so much. She is such a sweet dog 90% of the time, but when she’s in her “witching hours” it is not fun.

@pcbapets
@pcbapets 10 лет назад
Sometimes, a dog may see this as a weakness, and could carry on going, or simply not taking you as seriously as they should. In this case, you need to stay calm and assertive and try to ignore the pup. If ignoring doesn't work, then next time you are playing, try putting your pup on a short lead and if they go to bite you, pull the lead in sharply to your side (though not enough to hurt them, of course). This shows dominance and if the pup then grows calmer and relaxes a little they are showing submission and are beginning to understand that they shouldn't be biting you.

I've got a four month old german sheppard and he loves to bite, getting so excited and telling him 'no' gets no reaction. I tried this method and within five minutes my puppy was licking me instead of biting and when he did bite me, it was far more gently than usual. Maybe it depends on the breed but I've had great success with this method. I have found that it must be reinforced regularly - I stopped doing it after a week and he automatically went back to his old ways. I love Victoria's methods, she's incredibly gentle with the dogs and yet, gets great results. I've tried other methods (dominance etc) and none of them helped, in fact, some actually made his behaviour worse.
@konstance7087

Ive tried this, but when my 11wk old German Shepherd 'flips a switch' & gets excited she just comes back at us biting even harder and growling at us, even jumps up to our faces or private parts (at the boys), wanting to rip us apart. Its not always possible to have an alternate toy or treat on hand all the time. She's drawn blood countless times and now we are fearful of her and what the future holds as she gets bigger and stronger.

Kon Stance Don’t yelp. Just say “no” and remove whatever body part she was chomping on away. Then, immediatley ignore her like she doesn’t exist. She obviously thinks you are enjoying the horse play because of the yelping and engagement with her, so then do the opposite.

What about puppy shark attacks? My puppy sometimes bites my legs suddenly, barks and growls and doesn’t want to release. Maybe he thinks it’s a game but he bites harder than usual. I try to stay still while telling him leave it, ah ah, and when he finally releases I go away from him and ignore him to make him understand that that behaviour ends play. It doesn’t seem to be working though.

Okay if you are watching I have some problem with my puppy. She gets very excited when taken outside Her play time is for 30-40 min (she is 4 month as of now) and likes to play catch i.e. she runs around and I try to touch her. Now what problems I am facing is : 1. She starts jumping on me and mouth me. I can control it coz I can predict her actions I in most case create ample gap to save myself and she listens to me. But this is not the case with my husband. He wants to get close to her but she often tear his lowers by biting on it or bite on his hand. (No she is not scared of him) 2. She knows commands inside the house she listens and obeys outside she doesn't. What can I do to transfer the behaviour outside as well 3. She gets excited seeing other dogs and people when on walk Tries to pull leash and go to them. I tried desensatising her by giving her treats when someone passes by to keep her focus on me n treat but it sometimes work sometimes not 4. She would 100% listen n obey when she knows I have treats And 50% time when she doesn't know if I have treats or not.

This is assuming you've already tried the re-directs, etc... And, continue to use re-directs (for instance part of the praise for not lunging or stopping lunging at leg might be throwing a piece of food or toy for pup to chase across floor (leash still on). For barking at me to play- I ignore it. If gets too obnoxious, time to go in crate for a bit, no fanfare. I decide when play time is & how long. Again- this assumes pup is getting proper exercise & potty breaks already.

I never awarded that behaviour by keep on playing , i turned my back and took the toy off her and if she continued id walk put of the room and when she calmed down i walked back in and played with her again you might think your getting no where but trust me it will stop, also your puppy is teething and will keep on teething till he/she has all her adult teeth make sure you have lots of different texture toys, go to the pound shop and get a few squeeky ones aswell, and what helped me also which might sound stupid but train your pup to sit and only give a reward when it sits that way its earning the toy train them young!! It was easy to train mine she sat in an hour for me, and when the pup does something naughty be assertive and click your fingers and then move away :) hope this helps :)

The yelp and ouch! have only been making my puppy more riled up and he bites even harder :( Does anyone have any recommendations for this? I can't pull my arm away and walk away because he's so latched on

That dog is easy street. I have a puppy who refuses to stop not just mouthing but biting. We have redirected to endless amounts of toys, by yelping and ignoring. What do you do if the puppy follows you (while you are ignoring) and bites your pants? And barks at you to play? Time outs? I have tried that as well.

lol puppies with predatory instincts will actually like the yelping and bite harder. I say "no" very firmly to my German Shepard puppy and stop the play. for the last couple of days she reduced drastically her biting and the force of her biting on my hand or face lol

(& EJEE9901) Have pup on leash. Correct verbally & if pup still continues, use just enough force to restrain pup from biting your pants. Praise when / if stops lunging at your leg. Start (if you haven't already) training to sit, down, etc. using treats. Handle all over, giving marker ("yes") & treat when relaxes, verbal correction (firm but not loud 'No' or 'Uh oh' when tries to nip / growl.) If pup is still being an alligator, I give a time out in the crate for a bit & continue working later.

how long would you recommend for each time i try to train my puppy to not bite before he actually loses concentration? is there an ideal time? i got him to sit but he is now teething so any opportunity he gets he gives a quick bit at the hands and feet. any other methods for someone who cannot do a high pitch yelp? what about the timeout crate method or a hand shoved in the mouth as i saw from another youtube link. suggestions are appreciated thank you

I am trying this but my puppy still bites me. I do the yip and she starts barking and bitting and pulling my clothes. I try the redirecting and she goes for my fingers still. She is only 3 months and I have had her for 3 weeks and I'm not sure on what to do.

Cats can also learn not to bite by doing essentially the same thing. Teeth or claws felt, stop playing. At least it worked for my daughter with her cat.

I'm with you! My 2.5 month old does the exact thing! We redirect, yelp/ignore, remove from situation, etc... and he will follow/bigt on your pants/ankles. It's frustrating! How do we get them to stop?? Please help.

My dog likes to mouth but when I used the rope toy that he seemed to like it started to try bite me even if I put my hand near it could you help me?

Puppies nipping at ankles is a prey drive thing rather than a dominance/aggression. So it is not treated in the same manner that a dominant action would be. Not to knock her training b/c she's great, but I've bred & pre-trained 46 pups & have never found yelping does much to curb a pup's prey drive. Occasionally, it will cause a pause & a prick of the ears, but usually will go back at it unless it's super soft. Example of marker training pup here: youtube (dot) com/watch?v=10pu9EldJck

When alone with your dog, try putting them on a short lead and if they show signs of trying to jump or bite, pull the lead in sharply to your side, not enough to hurt them. Another thing to try is when the pup goes to jump mimick a short bite by tapping them sharply on the side. A dominating look or quick touch can work wonders, and the dog is more likely to calm down and show submission. Seeing as your dog is a high energy breed, you could try and lengthen works and make the most of your time exercising them to calm them down a bit.

I'd like to point out that although I've mentioned that squirting with lemon juice or water can sometimes affect a puppy's bond with the owner, using dominance and some methods I have mentioned are natural ways that dogs communicate or are easier for a dog to understand, and the dog can relate to this. Please don't think that any methods practised by trainers like Cesar Millan are cruel, as they do help the dog and the trainers practising these have the dog and owner's best interests at heart. My best advice is that you try different ways of training like positive reinforcement and dominance training and find out what different aspects of both are good for you.

I'd recommend taking advice from dog trainer Zak George, who combines firm yet kind leadership with clicker training and positive reinforcement.

My 6 month old jack russell bites my hands and feet for no reason at all. The worst is when i take something out of his mouth that he shouldn't have, like he's annoyed i've done it. Yelping in pain doesn't work, i can't leave him alone because he just latches on and toys don't work, he'd rather bite me. It's not just my hands and feet either, its any bit of skin eg back of my legs, or my arms. How can i make him stop? Suggestions please

I'm having issues with an 11 week old dachshund mix that I adopted. He's very mouthy and aggressive, to the point that he'll even gnaw on my boots when I'm wearing them, or grab a mouthful of my pants. I watch him carefully when he's in the room with my 4 yr old, but more than once he has gnawed on my son's hands enough to make them red, very quickly. It's frustrating because my son has a hard time with the "yelp and walk away" even though he tries it. Is there a video about aggressive mouthing?

My Cavalier King Charles is 10 months old and still chews my hand. When I say "No" she just keeps doing it. When she was a puppy I would yelp and do what Victoria does but I think I didn't do it enough for my dog to understand that she can't bite my hand. I also rough house just a little with her but gently. I don't know what to do now. I hope she doesn't do it forever.

How do we stop the jumping pup
@magoddess

He needs to learn leave it and drop it:) and make slow movements. If he feel like your getting excited he will keep the game going. so no yelling. Also you can try dropping treats on the floor so he gets distracted. that a good time to say leave it and then slowly walk away why he's eating.

OMG my puppy (5months old) does the same exact thing :( and i dont know what to do, these ppl and these videos make this crap look so freakin easy but when i walk away to "ignore" him he bites the crap out of my legs and arms...and i am just at the end of my rope :( i feel helpless! Did anyone ever answer your question or did you ever figure out what worked to make your puppy stop?

Ok my family has a massive problem with our 8 week old golden retriever. He immediately goes to playing with an 'open mouth' thinking its a game and every attempt at stopping him has not worked and has made him more excited and more aggressive. We tried yelping, growling, turning him on his back to show dominance and distraction, someone suggested holding his snout while saying no but that hasn't worked much more than the other techniques. Distraction works about 20% of the time but he will always return biting just as hard after a while. I don't know what to do because he targets me in particular. He's usually sweet tempered but he plays really rough. Its getting hard to play with him at all cos he just won't let up. If you walk away he bites hard onto skin and clothing and doesn't let go. Any advice?
