Amen to this. I can’t count how many dogs behaviors I’ve fixed or reduced by this tactic. People always hate hearing it or don’t want to but it’s true.

Question: my pup has a hard time getting the food out. Do you pack it tightly? He kind of gives up when he cant get to it and forgets its there. Can you tell me your packing method?
@austinhoover1892
@austinhoover1892 3 года назад
Anthony Vultaggio it would all depend on how old the puppy is, the way you are packing, the size of the Kong, the food it’s self. But mostly if they are hungry and been worked well, they will find a way. Most people get turned off on the idea but if they are hungry they will find a way. It’s best to keep challenging the puppy. Mostly with puppies a Kong is too tuff to chew on. So it really depends on the age, size of Kong, and the food you are using.
@austinhoover1892
@austinhoover1892 3 года назад
Anthony Vultaggio also to note creating a food drive with a mixture of toy/prey drive will really help the dog get more interested. Intensify the rewards and exaggerate the expression the dog will thrive.

Trust the process. My dog has a severe separation anxiety. Leaving him all alone? A horror story. Step by step, using Kong and leaving him alone from half an hour to hour or two hours we ended up here - where as soon as my dog sees I'm preparing Kong for him, he just cannot wait for me to get tf out of the house. He associated it quickly. Before, he couldn't be left alone for more than half an hour. Now.. the time doesn't matter at all. Up to six hours, no problem. But please, people remember, that this solves a lot of problems yes, but a good exercise for the dog, before leaving him alone, is even more important !

@@4SeasonMom controlling food and water intake is crucial to potty/crate training. Is your puppy having accidents after only eating out of the kong? Are you stuffing it with goodies that pass through the GI quickly (peanut butter or the like?)… one of my favorite thing to stuff them with is soggy kibble…then freeze it. Lots of variables to take in to account… If I were you I would do an experiment/assessment. Fast your dog so you know they don’t have to poop…feed them…then see how long it takes for them to have to go. You can do the same with water. The last 8wk pup I potty/crate trained had about 2 hrs till they had to pee and 3 till they had to poop. They’d eat at 5 and get their last drink at 7, last let out at 10pm… in the 7 weeks I had the pup…zero accidents. Good luck and be patient. Not all puppies are that easy. My forever dog took months to potty train.

Many good points, great info. I give my dog one for bed in her crate. We used kongs in the shelter to relieve stress in the kennel. Dogs in shelter are often too anxious to eat well, therefore, Kibble is given in generous amounts morning and evening. The kong would have been ignored if it just held more kibble. We stuffed ours with a small amount of kibble in the bottom, filled the rest with canned dog food and topped with peanut butter for the dogs, then froze them. Hard to imagine, but some dogs don't like peanut butter, we found the canned dog food was usually enough to interest them. Having some dry kibble in the most narrow part of the kong helps immensely with clean up, as the dried canned food in the bottom turns into cement when it dries. Having a larger hole in the larger kong will help dogs get started, but a bigger kong means that there is more that the dog cannot reach in bottom. Thanks for the video!

I am long overdue in thanking you for this video. My adult Jack Russell fell into a deep, destructive depression when her Lab/Shepherd brother died and started pretty much trashing my house whenever I went to work. Meanwhile, I rescued another dog (a few months later) who was underweight and needed to put on about a pound and a half. I filled a kong for each day of the week, modifying only in that I topped them with PB before freezing and gave one to each of the dogs before leaving for work. It has worked so well! Neither have separation anxiety and the formerly skinny guy is in perfect shape. Thanks!

I never got a Kong bc I thought that if you fill it with peanut butter (or any kind of food) it would get all over the dog's paws, fur, rug, cushions, etc. Doesn't that happen??? Who wants a dog smelling like peanut butter all the time bc it's smeared all over its fur and skin underneath, and then everything else the dog touches???
@GretchenVaughn

Be sure to consider the water added to frozen kibble as your dogs water intake. Especially younger puppies that can’t hold their bladder too long. This is extremely important when Crate training. We don’t add the water so to avoid accidents for our pup.

I'd rather take pup out more often for potty than limit water and risk a bladder infection or digestive issues (water is very important for kibble digestion). Actually, the more pup drinks, the more opportunities you have to potty train. A pup will learn much faster with more repetition.

So I found your videos JUST in time---came across them as I was researching to prepare for the arrival of our new rescue pup After watching this, I went and added more Kongs to our collection and got them filled/frozen before he came home. I also decided to get more for our current dog and do the same for her, figuring it couldn't hurt to give her a self soothing kong whenever he got one to help with the transition. We expected the first 3 days to be absolute CHAOS(we read about "3 days/3 weeks/3 months")with the puppy's world being turned upside down/ him decompressing and adjusting and with our new dog having her territory upheaved. But we are winding down on day 3 and it has been....OKAY?!?! Let me tell you, using these Kongs like this is a BIG reason why---ABSOLUTE GODSEND. Like, major bonkers anxious energy when he arrived, and there have been the occasional wild/dicey moments for sure, but with this kong method they have multiple sessions a day where they both engage in relaxed, self soothing behavior--which in turn has helped puppy boy improve his "off" switch. Dog training isn't always stress free or easy, but doing THIS is---not saying it should replace any training, but everyone should do themselves and their dogs a favor and use this tool. Thank you so much, currently working my way through the rest of your videos, every single one has been so easy to understand and that makes implementing them feel a lot more doable. It makes me excited to train!

Thank you for this timeless information! I've watched this video several times over to digest all the great data. My 2020 Christmas present to myself was a 10wk old purebred GSD puppy. I came home from the pet store with a blue large sized Puppy Kong, and filling this with peanut butter has him in love with Kongs, and eagerly entering his crate when I need to leave the house for 45-90mins. After watching your video, I've gone out and purchased an X-Large Kong Classic, which holds a full 1/2 cup of food, and 6' of thick parachute cord that I've strung doubled thru the Kong's top hole as a 3' long chew-proof tether. It's loaded up with Max's vet approved dry food and sitting in the freezer waiting for a more extended time that I may need to leave him alone. Your suggestion to buy one size bigger than looked appropriate was great, I was surprised this Kong only held half a cup. As an imminent 100+ lb adult dog - the healthy weight my vet says my dog will achieve when he grows into his ears and paws - he's currently on a diet of 1+1/8th cup of dry food 3 times a day (when not given wet food, or canine rice/meat/veggie meal for variety), so the Kong doesn't hold a full meal for him, but just under half a serving. I will most likely purchase several more XL Kong/tether combos so I have the ability to present a full serving of food to him entirely frozen in Kongs.

We got our dog from the shelter and discovered he had horrible separation anxiety. He escaped kennels and would destroy entire rooms, hurt himself and had diarrhea everywhere. We almost took him back for fear of him hurting himself but we decided to try out a trainers advice. The routine thing is so true, that was the base of everything we did for him. We gave him a couple Kong’s if we were leaving for longer than usual, it was a massive help. It took time and routine and some other aids but he is great now! I use my dogs’ kibble to stuff his chew toy and he goes crazy. You don’t need to stuff it with unnecessary food and treats(unless you want to) as long as your dog loves the Kong toy, it won’t matter what you put in it 👍

We put chunky peanut butter in our Kong which keeps our very active whippet satisfied for a long time! He gets so excited when he sees the jar of peanut butter coming out of the cupboard! Please make sure you check the ingredients in the peanut butter you put in the kong though- only buy jars where the only ingredient is 100% peanuts, nothing else added like sugar, salt, stabilisers or additives as these are all very bad for your dog! I’m in the UK and there are loads of peanut butter brands that have just peanuts as their ingredients- they’re not even expensive and are often cheaper than the big brand ‘junk food’ peanut butters that have a massive ingredient list!

@@Dina4444. Hi Dina, we’ve experimented with a lot of peanut butter over the years and the best one we found consistency-wise and texture-wise is the Meridian Crunchy Peanut Butter. It’s currently just £2 a jar at Tesco and the only ingredient is ‘roasted peanuts whole skin on’- nothing else added. The chunky one is the perfect texture and consistency to stay in the Kong without it running out of it and our dog just goes nuts for it lol (plus no adverse reaction like diarrhoea from additives). The only thing with this peanut butter is that the peanuts and the peanut oil naturally separates as it has no palm oil, additives or stabilisers to stop this natural process. So basically you just have to mix the oil back in or if you want a drier peanut butter you can just pour the oil out (that’s what I do). Hope that helps :)

Great video. I recommend using a blender for better consistency and to prep in bulk. Basically I blend dog food, water and a bit of peanut butter. I keep the blended food in my Magic Bullet blender containers in the fridge and just spoon the mixture into the Kongs whenever I'm prepping. Super quick to just scoop/funnel it into the Kongs and it freezes better when it's blended.

Curious to ask what kind of ratio of food, water and peanut butter you used to stuff? We just adopted a dog and I just saw this video and currently have 2 in the freezer with just food and water and will dab the pit edge with peanut butter like the video when we leave later to do some errands
@bakasan0000
@bakasan0000 2 года назад
@@KevAng039 I only use a little peanut butter cause I don't want my dachshunds to get fat. I usually mix it in with the food so that the smell is on all the food, but it probably doesn't matter much. I think freezing it is the most important part.

How long do you soak the food in water before putting in king and freezing
@bakasan0000
@bakasan0000 2 года назад
@@egdowney1 I usually use a blender, so I don't soak it at all. Just food, water, and peanut butter in the blender. If I'm in a rush, sometimes I just put the dry food directly in, run water through the Kong, then put peanut butter only at the entrance of the Kong to hold in the dog food and for smell/taste. The last method doesn't work as well, but works when you need to prep them quickly.
@amanda5jane
@amanda5jane 2 года назад
@@egdowney1 not long. You just want the outside wet enough so that it’s damp and will freeze. The food doesn’t need to be soggy if the food is still solid you can stuff at a little better and tuck the pieces of kibble under the edges of the inside of the Kong. It’s good if it’s a little bit easier to get the food out in the beginning and as they understand how to use it you can make it a little more challenging and harder to get the food out.

Obviously Great Danes eat a large amount and their meals wouldn't even come close to fitting in the Kong, so do you suggest I just hold out a bit of their morning meal to use in the Kong for stimulation when they have down time in their crates?

He is a little spitfire! We have tried crate training and it's not working. He howls, yeps, barks and won't settle down. Still pees in the house sometimes. This sounds like the answer. I have 8 large puppy kongs for my 2 year old 75 lb rough collie who is an extremely gentle chewer, and have already purchased 5 medium puppy kongs for the Collie puppy who will be coming to me at the end of march around 10 weeks old. When he gets big enough, I'll be buying 7 more large puppy kongs. I LOVE kong toys! they helped my dog to love his bed, helped to break him of begging (along with some serious training), and were instrumental in really taking his 'place' command to the next level. I actually stuff his kong with some canned dog food in the top, followed by some kibble, followed by one or two crunchy treats, and topped with either some natural peanut butter, plain greek yogurt, unsweetened applesauce, or pure canned pumpkin. Then I take a 4" bully stick and pop it in so it's sticking out of the top and throw it in the freezer. It takes him about 30 minutes to work his way through all of it. This is a special treat he gets the 2-3 times a week I'm actually home around dinner time---the only time we have formal sit down meals. I tell him to go to his place (on his bed, in the same room), and he will go to his place and work on his kong toy while we eat, and stay on his bed well after he's done. During thanksgiving and Christmas eve when we have large groups of people at the house, he can stay in the dining room as part of the festivities and meal time! It's fantastic, and people are always impressed by his good manners and lack of begging. As a bonus it helped build up his positive associations with his bed (which he didn't like before), and helped me to really create a rock solid 'place' command.

I love this idea! I am having some trouble with the whole meal being in the Kong. She gets two cups of food a day and I do a breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If I feed her in a bowl I generally put around three fourths a cup in the bowl. I bought the large size Kong (one below the biggest they had at the store) but her normal meal amount doesn't fit into one Kong. Should I give her more than one Kong at a time or buy a larger Kong? I feel like there is probably something simple I'm overlooking but this is my first dog to raise on my own so I'm way more lost than I thought I would be.

We measure out 3/4c dry kibble into a small jar for each meal, use that to load up one Squirrel Dude (similar sized toy though we also like Kongs), and give it to our dog as a reward a good behavior at mealtime. We like to cue lie down and look at me. Once she's done we refill it and repeat.

Well done for learning BEFORE you even get your puppy. Far too many people wait till they have a problem (that could easily have been avoided) to find out what to do and then finally if they can't solve it they call a dog trainer like me (The Dog Training Angel) to teach them how to fix it. That's after the dog might have destroyed half their house or eaten something dangerous that the vet has had to remove. It's far cheaper to learn before getting the dog and to hire the dog trainer to come six times over the first couple of weeks to help teach the puppy all the essential commands: Leave it, watch me, sit, stay, come, lead on, mat, wait, bed/crate, touch, drop it, off and down and anything else you fancy (shake (after shower), paw, high five, roll over etc). Good luck with your new dog.

Used the Kong like this for my current dog's first year of life. Great results. These days (two years later), Kong is still the favorite toy. Fill it with a strip a jerky inside and a peanut butter cap, he's thrilled. After getting that good stuff out, he wants to play fetch with the Kong. No problem. We also use the Kong Bone. After getting the goodies out of each end, he then wants to play tug with the bone. We always let him win 9 out of 10 times with tug games. Our medium size Aussie/Lab mix has the black Kong and Kong Bone, as the red ones didn't last long with his chewing power. Both of these toys are great when we travel and get into the motel room. Give him the toy and he calms down and accepts his current surroundings. Dogs like familiar, pleasurable things to keep them happy and calm.

KONGs are a GODSEND! I work from home and am on a lot of phone calls/conference calls with vendors and partners - I can not have my dogs start going batshit crazy because people are walking by our house. When I know I'll be on phonecalls, I will give them (I have two) a KONG toy stuffed mostly with their kibble and fill the remaining space with peanut butter or cheese whiz. They are completely engaged and focused on the KONG toy - no barking! I have 4 and there are always two in my fridge ready to go:)
