Note: In this video I misspeak a few times, saying "interspecies" when I mean "intraspecies". I apologize for the confusion.
If you are like me, and plan on integrating your pup into all of your family adventures, then make sure to start the socialization process early.
You never get a second chance to make a first impression!
I hope you guys enjoy!

I adopted a 18 month old dog who came with zero socialization. We get socialization once a week for several hours, and constant socialization with one other dog and a cat. This dog had never even had a collar on and knew zero commands. I knew going in that it was going to be EXTRA work, but I made that commitment. In the 2 months that I've had her, we've made so much progress, but still have plenty more to work on. This guy has tons of videos that have helped me IMMENSELY. Every time I come across a new obstical in training, I search this channel for a video about it. Amazing work!

They also need to be socialized to dogs that say no. My dog gives clear signs that he doesn't want to be friends and so many "friendly" dogs are hypersocial and don't know what a dog saying no even looks like.

I live in England and am am looking to take on a black labrador puppy next year. Researching about puppies, training, education etc I have found Stonnie to be so informative and interesting. Thank you Stonnie for your videos and excellent advice. I have learnt so much from you, not realising before how much there is to raising a dog from an early stage. You have given advice and showed resources which have inspired, excited and helped prepare me for the wonderful day our new family member arrives. If you come over to the Uk I would like to buy you a pint ! Thanks again. Ian

Stonnie, thank you so much for being so level headed, calm and simple in explaining behaviour and training methods. So many dog trainers now are high energy and are selling their training and it is very obvious they have a shallow understanding of dogs and their behaviour. I appreciate your content and the way it's delivered, you've helped me with my dogs and their issues by following your example and by you helping me understand WHY they react and interact the way they do. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for this video. My latest dog looks pretty much like Bluebell, but was almost as unsocialized as that pointer at the end when we got her at almost five months. She has a great "mentor dog" in our older dog, but we have worked so, so hard to get her out around people and other dogs every, single day during the winter (Yay! Spring is here!). We do lots of training outside the kids' school yard because all the hustle and bustle is a great distraction. Actually I have started to look at any distractions as an asset. I also took her to a puppy class and she is actually quite obedient and very eager to please, just not good with interacting with strangers (dogs and people). Skittish and easily spooked still, but a lot better than when we got her four months ago. Compared to our older dog, that we got started on socializing at a younger age, this is very work-intense, and it is just not nice to see her struggling so and dealing with all that fear and anxiety. Again thanks for a very important video!

I did a lot of my training in a wide open bank parking lot near my house. Had him on a long lead doing mostly sit , stay, come and walking at heel.... was good because other people would walk their dogs late afternoon. Was able to socialize him from a young age, and also teach him not to charge other dogs when he saw them coming.

GOAT dog training videos. But, sometimes I wish your dogs wouldn't be so perfectly trained so we would get to see you working with more difficult cases.
@StonnieDennis
@StonnieDennis 5 лет назад
The reasons those dogs seem to be perfect is because I am very careful about what I ask them to do. Did you notice that I did not ask the GSP to do anything? He’s not ready yet. The key to getting successful repetitions is to set up the situations properly. Honestly, it really isn’t that hard, if you will just be super patient.
@snuffcarl

@@StonnieDennis indeed, fully agree. I have the same perspective when working with kids (I'm a school shrink), its usually the first thing I tell teachers when they have students misbehaving. Always makes me smile when you do the good student parallel because its so spot on. However, I always find it much more difficult to apply it when training my own dog in everyday life. Also agree patience is the key, a lot of times I think I simply make the mistake of trying to adjust the dog to the demands of our household too quickly. Second dog coming in June, keep up your amazing work greatly appreciated!

Something I found that helps when you take dogs out to parks where there is A lot of distraction. Don't immediately take your dog for a walk. Find a bench and sit there for 10 to 15 minutes. Give the dog time to settle. He sniffs the grass he sniffs the air he watches people jogging, He watches other dogs, and starts to calm down. There will be some excitement in him but not to the level of when he 1st got there. Do this every time you take him out. Repetition is key.
@sortathesame8701
@sortathesame8701 4 года назад
Thanks, that sounds like a very reasonable suggestion! But can I ask if you meant to say, don't immediately take your dog off leash? At our dog park we do not walk my dog at the dog park, I let him run and play off leash. We walk to and from the park, but at the park I immediately take him off leash and off he goes! But he has had good training and knows how to behave. I can definitely see how sitting calmly with many dogs who come to the park would help them immensely! I don't know why I never thought to suggest it to some of my friends how have problems when they first arrive at the park!

I am so very sorry, my brain just immediately went to dog park instead of thinking public park! I guess went there because there is no public park within miles of me! It is an excellent suggestion for both situations!

What you said at the 5 minute mark. When I adopted my almost adult dog he would flip out with excitement every time I brought out the leash. After a while he was still glad to see it but he stopped flipping out. He knew he was reliably going to get a good walk (not just to the corner) at least twice a day. Sometimes we bike for 10 miles. We go to the dog park, the beach, the lake. It's just not a big deal. Now I see dogs who are excited about a leash and I feel bad. Seeing another dog shouldn't be a novel thing. Sure makes it easier to train when we think this way. Any dog can sit or come when it's just the two of us in the living room. Is the dog accustomed enough to other dogs that he will pretty reliably come when other dogs are around? To do that takes exposure and experiences.

Hey Stonnie, where do you get those thin slip leads? I am working with an 11 week old well bred Flat-coated retriever and would prefer the size you are using. FYI...You need a flattie! So I don't know if anyone has given the analogy of retrievers playing football. Flat coats are the qb's and the smartest on the team. Think Tom Brady. Cheaspeakes are the fullback and just want to crash into things. Labs are your tailbacks. Goldens are the wide receivers. They are there for the love and adoration

For those of you who keep asking about different locations to take your pets for environmental socialization, Lowe’s and Home Depot are two of the best. They will allow you to walk your dogs through there you can have them sit stay follow you while you’re talking to people teaching calmness , manners If those are too far you may have an ACE Hardware or rural king or Orschelyn’s, farm and home etc. Once that is easy for them then go to petsmart or petco, And if you have a busy dog park by you don’t feel guilty or bad for your dog if you take them there and don’t allow them to just FreePlay. You can take your dog and work on obedience outside the fence of a dog park with high distractions and then move inside. It all comes down to if you have the time to do that or not. And if you all are like myself I rarely have that so I try to incorporate it into other things or I take the pups with me anytime I go shopping and I try to do as much shopping at the previous mention stores that I can

I had my lifetime dog Carla, a lab / chow mix I rescued at 10 months who went everywhere with me when I hauled horses. She was very well mannered, understood a vast vocabulary. I got a ticket on vacation at a park because some one else's rude dog got a ticket for crashing a picnic and they said I should get a ticket too. The leash rule. She even had a canine good citizen award. A warning would have worked on us, oh well,, I've had many good dogs since, but none so intelligent and kind.

How do you force your dog to do things they dont want to? I have a mini aussie that is 6 months old and he doesnt like his crate. I say the word crate and sometimes he goes in and sometimes he doesnt and when he doesnt I force him in there by guiding him but he doesnt seem to get it and its fustrating its been days and everytime i want him in there i usually guide him in and say the word. Also how do you get your dog to not care about water? Both my aussie and my adult dog hate water and avoid it but i make them get in it but they hate it and i dont know why.
@judymiller5154
@judymiller5154 Год назад
maybe you have trained your dogs its ok to ignore you ? Many times a day, gesture and throw an irresistable treat in the crate till they are happily anticipating "getting to go in". Now say another word like maybe "bed" or "place" right after they head in. Gradually change to gesture- word- treat to see if they obey without the treat When you want to close them in, use a kong filled with wet dog food as the treat so they are happy to stay inside for a while. Remember, without other incentives, a crate is a prison, so why would they happily volunteer?

I adopted a poorly socialized 8 month old female Malinois. I've had her for about 7 months and although we've progressed, she seems to have kept some of her bad habits. Do you think she'll ever move past or will this be her personality forever?

Patience and trust and perserverance, she is still very young and her brain is not fully developed, around two yrs you will see a change and all the hard work will pay off and you can begin to really see and enjoy the benefits of all your hard work.

I just got a very energetic 7 yr old no socialization. Been working hard with him he's frantic at times . Was not leash or potty trained. We take long walks I've been watching your channel. You put much emphasis on early everything can I change him . He's not great with other dogs too excited .can you address the older adult dogs in my case a rescue often times a bit older?

Stonnie, I have a one year old Anatolian Shepard mix. I rescued him at 3 weeks from a neighbor who got him from a garage sale where the lady of the mother was giving away all the pups in the litter. Anyway, how can I reach you to discuss possibilities of training options? Thank you.

Is Mr. Noname becoming his name, or are you still planning on picking a name? Do you have a process for deciding on a name or just thinking of one that fits him?

We throw around names all the time. Usually a name just sticks to a puppy. Unfortunately, I’ve had lots of dogs and I know thousands so I’ve kind of ran out...

Due to Covid my puppy wasn’t able to socialize at all! Our other dogs were socialized correctly, but this one is now scared of other dogs and people. Not sure now how to help her past this. We can’t go to the dog park now that it is reopened because she barks and her hair stands up and she gets aggressive. I know that she is nervous and that is the aggression, but I don’t want to set her up for failure, because we can never end it on a high note. This weekend I am going to try roller blading with her for at least 20 minutes or however long it takes to tire her out completely. Then I will try the park again! Is this the right way to try this?

I hope it turned out well! My puppy that I received a week ago has that anxiety with other dogs because her breeder never socialized her and she had no brothers or sisters, so I formed a puppy group with other people we happened to meet at my local park. Best of luck!

@@octave9029 With time and constant exposer it has helped a lot. I have her in a high energy day care twice a week plus walks around people and other dogs daily, She is way better! You are doing the best thing having her around other dogs, they help teach better than we can.

I have a 23 week old golden retriever. My question is what should I start with in socializing her? Take her to play with other dogs at a dog day care? Do this for a few days and then start working her?

Hi! I'm living near Montreal. I'va never heard of a place who offers that kind of training sessions with puppies. If someone knows about a place, PLEASE let me KNOW. I'm interested!!!!

Have I been using inter and intra backwards all this time? That's the opposite of how I use it.

It’s hard to keep up a running monologue. I make mistakes like that a lot. Sometimes it’s names, breeds, ages, etc... Inter species is between different species. Intra species is between the same species.

@@StonnieDennis Ah ok. I didn't mean to nitpick, I just thought maybe I'd been wrong this whole time. Love your videos and your approach. And I've consistently been impressed with how little you stumble or pause during your monologues. Really well done.

@@MiddleAgedMisfit No worries. That was a good catch. I appreciate positive criticism as it keeps me on my toes. If RU-vid still allowed annotations I would put a card up. They discontinued that in January though. I made a note in the description.

Stonnie, this makes me feel like we shouldn’t“rescue” a dog and should get a pup from a breeder. Am I correct?
