Transfer portal has a lot to do with this. Also, isn’t that what makes a knockout tournament great? I love watching team basketball where anybody can win
Purdue game strategy has always been Painter's weakness. He allows smaller and quicker teams to pull his larger team away from the basket and then drive and dish for easy shots and put backs. Purdue plays a zone defense and a poor shooting FDU doesn't win that game. Purdue has done this with N. Texas, AR Little Rock, St. Peter's and FDU. Painter must change his strategy and tactics to adjust to their opponent. Painter is a great recruiter, developer of talent and team chemistry, but in-game strategy is geared to playing Big Ten teams, who don't play this way - besides Rutgers who had their way with Purdue.
Purdue's coach should fire! How you not making sure your 7'4" center not even putting up a shot attempt in the last 9 minutes of a tight game is insane, especially when you opponents is a bunch of 6 footers.
@@JoshSevcik and they technically shouldn't have even made the tournament lmao. They lost their conference championship to Merrimack but they weren't tournament eligible. So in reality, they were a 17 seed as Merrimack should have been the 16 😭
@@shawnlong4039They’ve lost to every single double digit seed except for a 14 so if they lose to that seed next, they’ll be the first team to lose to every double digit seed
I'll say this there were a lot of people me included who thought they were going to be a middle of the pack team this year in the B1G! No excuses and I tipped my cap to FDU but Matt Painter needs to take a long look in the mirror
It's an Indiana team. My state is well known for not winning it all. Doesn't matter the sport. We have a good team and something ALWAYS happens. Like that Pacer team who would have won a ring but that right killed the chances
@@chriskay1449 decades and decades ago my guy. No Purdue, Wisconsin or Iowa team will ever win a title with they way they recruit. Too many white guy. Too many unathletic guards. Has nothing to do with you state, had to do with the players your schools recruit. White stiffs. And btw, IM WHITE AND IM SAYING THIS. These are just the facts. It's not our sport lmao
@@chriskay1449 like nearly 50 years ago. Put that team in front of today's basketball style and there is no way they would go undefeated. 70s and 80s ball does not work today. In fact that is one of the problems Purdue has. Get faster smaller players. Most of the big 10 plays that old school stuff
Bilas is an honest broker. He knows the game and he is fair to Purdue. I think his analysis is accurate: The loss was caused by having the wrong mindset.
@@Ayo601 And to think FDU got in because the NEC tourney champion (Merrimack) was ineligible. Wonder how greatly Merrimack would have humbled Purdue. North Texas, St. Peter's and now Fairleigh Dickinson. 3 consecutive years, 3 straight defeats to 13 seeds or lower in the Big Dance...I wonder how many people are gonna call for Matt Painter to be axed immediately.
@@Ayo601 I don't think his hotseat is hot at all, despite the recent tourney losses. He was literally a crazy back tap on a free throw from getting to the final 4 before these last 3 tourneys, he's one of the winningest Big 10 coaches of all time, so I don't think his seat is remotely hot despite all the recent upsets.
Not an upset. FDU had better athletes, were pressuring the ball 94 feet, and doubling the Bigg man on every possession. Edey is too slow and Purdue couldn’t hit an open 3. Rutgers pretty much exposed them when they beat them earlier this year
Is there a reason that they called out Purdue and not Painter? Adjustments are done by the coaches. Does the sports media get cut off if they call out a coach? Sorry to be petty, but for crying out loud, put the blame on the person responsible.
No offense to the players.. I’m 43 and I had never heard of this school FDU..I went to a small MAC school and work with Big Ten bigshots and anytime they fall to a small college I get huge personal satisfaction .. some Big Ten fans show all this ‘pride’ and rub it on your face but you play ball with them and they don’t even know how to shoot a basketball or throw a football 🫢
It was awesome! I'd like to thank Virgina and Purdue for giving the college world pure entertainment with stunning, record breaking loses. lol Purdue hahah the big 10 hahahahaha
Negativity? They're facts. Purdues loss was the biggest loss ever in a tournament game. Don't get your panties in a bunch because your team is doo doo . It's the same thing every year bub🤡
Its ok to lost one than never won any title in NCAA,sometimes we better give a chance to the others to spread or widen the League, ang give booost to small college to give them the best shot
When is the last time a team from the big 10 won a national championship 🏆. Answer is Michigan State in 2000. Cleaves / bell/ Richardson were on the team. The big 12 / Acc/ sec are better. No cap 🧢 but Purdue chocked bilas is right.!! 😢
I mean fdu was literally swarming Edey all game. When they were trying to feed it to him in the post they had 4 guys collapse on him. They pretty much said we’re gonna let everyone else beat us other than the 7’4 guy. And it worked.
@@mattbedrosian5298 They were two 5'8 and 5'9" and the rest were 6'6" or shorter, and Edey is 7'4" 300lbs, no one on the other team is bigger than 220lbs. Anymore excuse?
@@scruffd0g193 The funny thing is that they were a crazy play away from losing to Purdue in the Elite 8 that year, and if Purdue is the one in the Final 4 and maybe even winning it, then the narrative is totally different lol
@@mach6893 No, UMBC was a 16 seed through and through. they barely made it into the tourney. they lost to Albany by over 40 a couple months before the tourney. I will say now letting it setting and looking at the stats, I do concede FDU is a bigger upset, though it wasn't as shocking as UMBC beating Virginia.
