The weather wasn't what it was supposed to be, and I struggled to get started on this glider flight. The low points and failed attempts were demoralizing. How did I deal with these setbacks?
Glide Aperion has a video from the same day. Check it out: • Gliding in the Zone | ...
Discover what flying sailplanes is really like. This is the story of a full glider flight, from take-off to landing, shown in time-lapse. It includes voice-over commentary, 3D visualizations, instrument overlays, statistical overlays, 360 video, and post-flight analysis.

Didn’t realize the lack of great gliding content online until I got my Glider license! Fantastic work! Keep it up!

I simultaneously love and hate how gliding exposes my emotional side. I first thought gliding was all about controlling the glider well, then I learned it was about decision making. Then I realised it was actually about controlling your emotions to be in a state to make decisions. I wonder what I will learn next. Watching your videos triggers those same reactions as if I was flying myself. Really great.

Hey Ben! Great commentary with your video. I fly in the UK and conditions here are regularly like those in this video. I’ve been flying sailplanes for nearly 35 years (as well as military and commercial as a job) and competed in competitions up to national level and found that my emotions were often my greatest enemy when I made errors. As I’ve got older and wiser I’ve found I’m more chilled about everything and work the same mindset as you when those (frequent) errors creep in. I often get airborne on rubbish days but, figuring I can soar local to my airfield, that if I just set off somewhere I can often go quite along way with telling myself it’s ‘just local soaring’. Keep up the great content. Best regards - Grinner

Excellent video and commentary. As a Gold C with over 2000 hours soaring this one of the best videos to portray the decision process when soaring. Well done!

Terrific video, Ben! I can't help but notice the similarities between this flight and one I took recently (in PY), except that I got low without any good landables in glide. You're absolutely right about patience, a lesson I just recently learned. See you at cloudbase!

Very interesting ... your flight and your comments, your strategy. In Belgium (Europe), I have the same questions, thecsame feelings. Many thanks Ben.

Nice flight. We only have a valley here, no mountains, so completely flatland flying. I don't mind the low cloudbases so long as streets are working, but you have to look out for overdevelopment, and constantly look for potential landable fields, and whether or not the way back is starting to turn blue. Buddy flying is helpful as you can both look for working clouds when the day seems to be cycling. I like that you are willing to abandon a plan and switch gears. I had not thought about your strategy to mentally think about being off tow and starting afresh after struggling. I'm going to use that in the future. Thanks!

Awesome video: impressive how you captured the very recognizable emotional rollercoaster in a single flight. How did yout get these cool shots where the camera turns with respect to the plane? Is it a 360 camera?

Thanks! Yes, it's an Insta 360 X3 camera.

in the end surviving is the main part of every flight. i had situations as well where i thought i could risk it and take another ridge and try this cloud that's in the next valley.. but what if it doesn't work as planned or it isn't even there anymore when i arrive. better to be safe than sorry and also SELA gliders give you limited backup there as well..

Did you fly with water? At 2:34, with Mc: 4, when arival altitude goes down to 0, wouldn't you switch to Mc: 0, to see if you can make it, flying slower? Great videos!
@BenHirashima
@BenHirashima 8 месяцев назад
No water. I didn't switch to MC0 because I knew well enough that switching would show that I could make it.
