This board with Gullwing Sidewinder 2 (3 shocks pads 3mm for not touching the ground) is so freaking fun.. love it ! Ultra flexible and carvy, more fun than Paris trucks, great with Rayne centerset 70mm or 4President 77A :D Tried with Hamboards trucks and feels nice too, great board for sliding with Landpaddle, with Waterborne it's nice too :)

@freaksport
@freaksport 2 года назад
I think those surfskate kits are great for pumping slower and tighter turns. But probably you can´t use the flex of the board a lot in combination with such a loose truck. In my setup I have the standard trucks quite tight so I can put power in the board without the trucks overreacting. But I need higher speeds to be able to pump efficiently at all.Just try it, it´s good training and experience either way.

cool video! I had a loaded dervish about 10 years ago. Im getting back into longboarding, but not as intense as before. what is the flex you have an what is your weight? I want the shorter version but im concerned flex 3 might be a bit too flexy and not enough spring for my 225lb build these days.
@freaksport
@freaksport 2 года назад
Thanks, I´m around 210 pounds and I have flex 1. My personal advice would definitely be flex 1 for you. Also when you are taller your stance might not be ideal on the shorter board. But I also have never tried one before.
@habat4ever

Awesome video thanks, appreciate it! I am more into pushing than pumping. Would you recommend the Vanguard in 38'' or 42'' for commuting long distances by pushing only and considering more a freeride, freestyle approach or is the vanguard not a good fit for my style? I am also around 74-77kgs and would like the most stiffest experience. Shall I consider Flex 1?
@freaksport
@freaksport 2 года назад
Thanks man. I guess especially if you wanna push long distances most people would suggest a board with a drop through axles, cause it´s lower. My suggestion is, start pumping cause it´s more fun :) Loaded icarus and tan tien might might suit you well too.
@habat4ever
@habat4ever 2 года назад
@@freaksport Thaks for your quick reply, appreciate it!, I'm looking since a very long timeand comparing SBS the ICARUS and the TAN TIEN... but still have not selected the one, even if I have a slight preference for the TAN TIEN... which one would be best for me considering the fact that I like COMMUTING, PUSHING, LONG DISTANCE RUNS and would also like to consider FREESTYLE and FREERIDE + a bit of SLIDING, DANCING and DOWNHILL and with a need to have the STIFFEST possible board as PUSHING and COMMUTING LONG DISTANCES is what I do most of the time. I would also like to regularly change the wheels up and down in size (probably by keeping same Paris trucks but that depends on the wheels) and could potentially consider a SURF mount later if I wish to do some PUMPING. Which wheels would be the best for an All Around adventure, one set of wheels fits all?
@aaron80834
@aaron80834 Год назад
Awesome video! I have a dervish sama and just learning how to get pumps out of it. I find that I get the best results with both feet way up in the front. I still have a long way to go as far as developing the skill and confidence to really bounce and lean into my turns. Question is, you speak of this “harmony” between the flex of the board and the bushings. I have the dervish sama (42”) in flex 1 and I weigh 200 pounds. What bushings would you recommend for this set up. It’s a drop through so maybe they should be different then the ones in your vanguard? I want to pump! Thanks.
@freaksport
@freaksport Год назад
Thanks! When you have both feet way up in front, you probably have your back leg in the middle of the board. That is where you have the most leverage to flex the board. Probably that´s the reason why it feels the best. With a flex 1 board and your weight I´d probably recommend rather hard bushings, but bushings are cheap and you could always experiment a bit. In the end you want to feel that the energy you put in the board is affecting the flex and the angle of the trucks equally. In the beginning and at lower speeds it´s easier to pump just with soft bushings and not really flexing the board. But riding faster and really flexing the board, that´s where the fun is and what those boards are made for. At least in my humble opinion.

What speed do you need to attain to reach the threshold of maintaining continuous pumping like this?? Also what speed are you averaging while flat powered pumping? I have watched this video many times now . I also have the Vanguard 38 and Vanguard 42. I am just under 80kg so my optimal set up seems to be Vanguard 38 with purple nipples medium tight. I can still just barely keep going on dead flat and I can not go up hill even the smallest for more than 100 meters before I start walking. Getting stronger but still need to find the groove.
@freaksport
@freaksport Год назад
If I work really hard I could accelerate it up from low speeds, but I guess between 16km/h 10mph and 22km/h 14mph is where it feels best and also most efficient. Accelerating and going uphill ia also quite demanding for me and I also rely heavily on smooth asphalt. I guess the way to improve your groove or flow is just to play with it and try to vary your pumping style. For flex and bushings I feel it is most important they harmonize, so energy to the board equally flows into the deck and the trucks.

Thanks Dude, it´s the 42" version. I never had any other choice than flex 1 and I have never ridden a 38" at all. So it´s hard to give you some good advice. That beeing said, with your weight the choice could be between flex 3 and 4 in 38" . But if you can test ride them.
@veteranzombiehunters
@veteranzombiehunters 10 месяцев назад
So is the vanguard always a tall board because of the curvature of the deck? Mine sits over 5” off the ground - which seems very high to me. Not sure if I can lower it with shorter trucks or smaller wheels maybe? Otherwise love the deck.
@freaksport
@freaksport 10 месяцев назад
When you put your weight on the board you will lower it a bit already. And the rest of the height can be used to actively flex the board while pumping. When I really try hard I can actually make the middle of the deck touch the ground while riding. So the height of the board is what enables that great flex and why I absolutely love that board. So my advice would be not to lower the deck, but try to use and enjoy the full flex. And you will get used to the height. A good exercise is also to put the board on some soft grass and just bounce a bit on it to get a feeling for how much it can actually flex. Hope you enjoy the board as much as I do.

Awesome. No wedge/de-wedge? Do you prefer your trucks symmetrical at 50 degrees? Very uncommon setup for pumping so fast!
@freaksport
@freaksport 9 месяцев назад
Thanks, yeah no wedges. This board is actually what would be the factory setup from Loaded. I guess wedges are mostly used on very stiff boards and that the flex of this board actually does something similar by changing the angle of trucks through every turn depending on how hard you pump/flex the board. But I haven´t actually tried wedges. I´m just too happy with my setup right now to even bother. 🙂
@alexmc69
@alexmc69 2 года назад
What is your bushing/washer setup, please? Do you think it better to have a stiffer flex and softer bushings or the other way around?
@freaksport
@freaksport 2 года назад
I´m using the yellow Orangatang Nipples (hardest) there at aroung 100kg bodyweight and a old flex 1 board. In my opinion the hardness of the bushings and the flex of the board need to be in harmony. So when you transfer power into the board the energy gets distributed evenly into the turning of the axles and the flex of the board. I actually think that`s really important and I will fine tune it continuously.

Hi Freak - Impressive! I am very interested in mastering pumping just like you are doing in this video. I have been trying to do this on my Loaded Tan Tien 38 inch but the drop-thru Trucks are not ideal for pumping. I would like to replicate your set up for my weight at 80kg. Here is what I am thinking: Vanguard 42 inch Flex 3 50 degree Paris trucks 180cm Orangatang 85mm 80a Caguama Medium Nipples Do you think this would work for me? How long did it take for you to learn to pump like this? Where is the location in the video? Is it a park? Do you have any instructional videos that you would recommend to develop this technique?
@freaksport
@freaksport 2 года назад
Thanks Steve, I think the flex 3 is always the shorter 38'' length. So I would rather recommend the flex 2 in 42". With the longer board you have the flexibility of placing your foot closer or further away from the middle and by that changing your lever for flexing the board. My theory about bushings is, that the stiffness needs to fit the flex of the board so they work in harmony. The medium ones could be fine, maybe also the hard ones would work. I (100kg) use the hard ones and probably still over tighten them a bit. In general I think the vanguard needs some speed and some power to work really well, so it might take a bit longer to have it really work well. I had been riding other boards for maybe 10 years already before getting the vanguard, which I now own for more than 13 years also. So it might take some time to master it, but hard for me to say how long. I sadly don´t know of any instructional videos I could really recommend. My advice would just be ride as much as you can and feel the board, it has to become a subconscious thing. The location was the Olympic park in Munich. Good luck on your journey.

@freaksport Год назад

Double barrel bushings, right? Do you find a huge difference from a barrel + cone setup?
@freaksport
@freaksport 2 года назад
Yeah the Orangatang Nipples now. I used to have cone bushings on Randal trucks before. Probably not a huge difference. Having new bushings at all and the right durometer was definitely the bigger difference.
@gpietra
@gpietra 2 года назад
@@freaksport Thanks! What do you think is the best durometer for long distance pumping on Paris V3 trucks? I have a board which is basically a Vanguard replica in maple wood (built it myself) and I weight 70-75 Kgs. Because with the stock barrel+cone bushing is hard to pump properly.
@freaksport
@freaksport 2 года назад
@@gpietra Hard to say for me, I´m 100kg and always use the hardest durometer and still overtighten them probably. I guess if you start with the Nipples in Medium (for 68-113kg) it shouldn´t be too far off. And in the end a few factors have to play together to give you efficient pumping. Like the bushings, flex of the board, your speed, your riding style. So just try different things and you will find what fits you. My setup also needs some speed to work well and I don´t really go for long distances, just for the most fun pumping. ;)
@veteranzombiehunters
@veteranzombiehunters 10 месяцев назад
I’m looking at nipples (bushings) and worried yellow will inhibit my turning; I’m only 130-135 lbs. Will purple or orange still work pretty well for pumping? Also can gullwing double kingpin trucks work ok for pumping or would single hanger trucks work better?
@freaksport
@freaksport 10 месяцев назад
With the bushings I would just start with the weight recommendation from orangatangwheels, which would be the orange ones in your case. And about the gullwing double kingpin trucks, I don´t have too much experience with them. In general I think these kind of trucks enable you to do much tighter turns and pump at much lower speeds. But also limit you to those lower speeds and probably don´t work well with flexing decks. In the end that´s personal preference.
