Dustin goes hunting turkeys in Nebraska with Cabelas and shoots a giant purebred Merriam on a spot and stalk hunt.
After being invited to Cabela's LAST EVER TURKEY CAMP (before being bought out by Bass Pro) he decided this was his chance to get a purebred Merriam.
Of course, it came down to the very last minute and as they went to go after a hybrid, they spotted a purebred Merriam in JUST the knick of time!
One of the best parts about being an outdoor writer is getting to meet people. Not only meet them but spend time with them in camp, learn about them, their families and of course share a few cocktails together. Cabela's Turkey Camp in 2018, I believe will be the last ever turkey camp that Cabela's would put together after decades of doing it. The merge between Cabela's and Bass Pro forced many families to make decisions and I'm happy to say that although none of these guys still work for Cabela's, they have gone on to bigger and better brands and companies and are doing great things in the hunting industry.
I am beyond blessed when I get to attend a media hunt and of course I'm there to WRITE about the story. Whether it be for a print magazine or digital, however, I always like to try to capture video while I'm there. The first three episodes of this hunt I published to Top Pin Outdoors Facebook and RU-vid Channel...but this hunt sat in the archives unpublished. It stayed unpublished because I wanted to make this beyond special, add some voice-over work, get creative with extra footage and really give thanks to the guys who brought me out on this hunt and shared camp with me.
Truth is, once I found this today, I'll never forget when we got back to camp and watched the footage. The guys all laughed at our reaction after shooting this turkey. Our unscripted, slightly embarrassing reaction and just pure documentary, had our guide Cory, saying "This is much more fun than the big TV shows where we have so many products and reenacting and stuff to do"...which I've done before and truthfully it takes away from the hunt in many ways.
So, with that, I watched this footage today, I gave it a good laugh, remembered the good times I had with this group of men and I hit the "EXPORT MEDIA" button. It's rough, no color grading, done on POV cameras but it captures one heck of a hunt and memory.
