Purgatory is 100% BIBLICAL!! [14 Verses Every Catholic Should Highlight]

I used to tell people purgatory was not biblical for four reasons: 1. It's not in the Bible, 2. There are no second chances after you die, 3. There are only 2 eternal destinations -- heaven or hell, and 4. Jesus paid for our sins so we don't have to. Every one of these reasons I used to give make it obvious that I had no idea what the doctrine of Purgatory actually taught. I'll share 14 verses that will help you see that the Catholic doctrine of Purgatory is 100% biblical, and you should love, accept, and embrace it as truth.

That was an excellent presentation .While listening , I was remembering ,what my Priest had said on Purgatory ( Greek Ukrainian Catholic ) , which was very similar using the same scriptures . The only other I would mention is our Lord's parable of the rich man and Lazarus the beggar . How in Sheol they were separated , and the rich man had to suffer more than Lazarus . I think your application of 1 Corinthians 3:12-15 was a bit of a stretch. Reading this in the context of what Paul writes, I cannot see how this applies to Purgatory.

Regarding the use of the word Trinity to describe God, I understand that the term Trinity was first confirmed as Church doctrine at the Council of Nicea. So, if the Catholic Church confirms the use of a term used to describe God and it is still used today by Catholics and Protestants alike, although the word is not in the bible but the concept is, why not purgatory? Your ministry is fantastic. Protestant converts are adding so much biblical awareness to catholic culture. I for one appreciate it and wish more of my fellow Catholics would read their bibles. I read my Bible every morning, I am so hungry to hear God speak to us, it is fantastic. Thank you for helping me along my journey.

I once read that Tertullian was the first to 'use' the Latin word Trinity circa 200 AD but, as you said, Nicea first confirmed it in 325 AD. Thanks.

And we believe non Catholic Christians to be beloved brothers and sisters in Christ too I was a Christian before I was a Catholic. And for my Catholic friends… I delete every comment that calls non Catholics non-Christians. However imperfect or separated from full communion we may be, a baptized Christian is united by this sacramental gift of grace to the body of Jesus.

@@KennyBurchard So true. My first foster parents were Methodist. It was not until I was around 50 (I’m 70) that I understood how faithful ‘mum’ and ‘pop’ were in following Jesus. I never heard mum say a single word against anyone, we all attended church every Sunday, did Bible readings every night, they supported many people overseas, plus many other things. I completed RCIA and Baptised in 2017. I pray and thank God for having sent me to them (from aged 6-11). Although I experienced an ‘eventful and challenging’ childhood (many, many changes and still coming to terms with some events), what they taught was deep within me and surfaced eventually. 🙏🏻😁

Wonderful video, I needed a refresher. I was awakened two nights ago at 3 am after a brief "dream" in which I found myself looking at and speaking with my maternal grandfather who passed away 20 years ago. I won't give all the details, but he spoke as clearly as if it was just yesterday I had heard his voice, he looked physically vigorous as I remember him when I was a boy and he was in his early 60's. He seemed calm and serene yet serious. As soon as the dream ended I awoke, fully alert and felt immediately to pray for him. I have a small altar at my bedside so got down and said three Hail Mary's for the repose of his soul and spent another hour pondering this. I have never had such a thing happen. My grandfather was a wonderful man, humble, gentle, and I was close to him. He taught me a lot, and I often think of him and wish he could have seen some of my life since his passing. He was not Catholic, but once we had a good talk, and he was very friendly with Catholics and respected their faith. I have hope he needs my prayers now. In the dream I happened to be on my way to visit him (as if he were still alive), and I bumped into him in the street just outside the cemetery where he is buried, in the same neighbourhood he lived in for 50 years, and only later after I awoke and was meditating on this location, did this obvious detail hit me. What we discussed is perhaps not so important, as the fact he seemed to be doing well, but very grave yet relaxed about it. Very hard to put into words, his countenance was just...serene resignation, his words very measured. I hope to one day truly meet him on the other side.

I've been doing the St. Gertrude prayer for the last six years and I set a goal for every 10 days to help 1 million souls to be released from Purgatory. Next month I will have reached 200,000,000 million souls to find freedom from Purgatory. I only wished I would have known about St. Gertrude's prayer sooner. I also documented every million that I reached to prove to anyone who might question my claim. Once I reach my goal then 3 hundred million will be my next goal. Blessings to all of you who are helping the poor souls in Purgatory.

This is a wonderful explanation. Thank you! Is there another video explaining how Catholics pray for the souls in purgatory, and how they can help those who are still being purged in the fire? I am sure this is also an issue for Protestants. (Maccabees) I have been praying for the poor souls in purgatory all of my life, since I was a child. We also pray for them at every Mass . Recently Our Lord told me to offer my daily Mass for my deceased parents for one year. They were devout Catholics and good people. I had no idea as to the state of their souls, but I was sure they were not in hell. I offered each daily Mass for them for one year, as the Lord asked. After that I felt a release as to any difficulties I had with them. A week later my sisters went to my deceased mother's house and took away her clothes, which had been in a room for a couple of years. However, my sisters have left the Catholic faith, but it seemed to me that the spiritual connection to them through our mother was intact because of what they did. The Orthodox teach that after 40 days the soul goes to either heaven or hell. They do not teach the Catholic concept of purgatory. And of course there is the issue of indulgences.

He knew the Bible in depth, but due to her input, he no longer believe in Purgatory, no longer held the Blessed Mother in high regard, and was repulsed by the repeti cious chanting of the roseyx I assured him that I would pray for him after he fed as I anticipated that he’d be spending time in Purgatory cleaning up before being able to enter Heaven.

@KennyBurchard
@KennyBurchard Месяц назад
Many thinkers have a theological imagination and that’s okay. It’s how we process biblical concepts. The Church does not absorb the language of torment into the dogmatic teaching in the Catechism. It may be deeply painful to have Jesus remove something from us that does not belong. But it is not hell fire. It is heaven fire. My son has had 13 surgeries on his face. Each one was a deeply painful experience based on a birth defect. In love we subjected him to the surgeons scalpel to see him formed into what he was meant to be. In purgation God is not torturing us though the purgation may seem torturous. It is the pain of healing and restoration.

I used to share that same dread of Purgatory. But fairly recently a spiritual experience changed everything, and perhaps it will help you, too: In prayer, I was standing in front of the Cross, looking up at Jesus. In my mind i was maybe 30 yards away. As I gazed upon our Lord, I had a sense of him pulling me toward himself, but suddenly I resisted! I had suddenly felt unworthy, dirty! I looked and saw his most Sacred Heart, but at the front was an opening within which I could see the burning furnace of his love, and I begged him, “please, let me first dip my hands in the furnace so they may be clean enough to touch you!” When we come face-to-face with our Lord, we will actually beg him to cleanse us. I absolutely believe that now. We have nothing to fear!❤❤

Thank you, Mr Burchard. I am a 71 yr old Christian that is seriously considering converting...I already believe a lot of the mire Catholic teaching such as the Blessed Virgin Mary..(although I was taught Jesus Did have biological brothers). Purgatory was a concept that terrified me more than it should have (perhaps because I was burnt very badly as a child) and the thought of purging by fire was not pleasant. You have cleared up a lot of the confusion and I suppose I need to have a talk and have the Preist finally put my mind at ease......(About this and the current questionable statements from the Pope) but you have done a LOT to make it less frightening. I have watched a few of your videos and you do a WONDERFUL job explaining things. Most of the apologists from the Catholic Perspective do nice work but I have found 1 or 2 on both sides that are too sure of themselves and cone off as arrogant if you're on the "other side"....but you are down to earth and truly care for everyone as individuals.....and youre the 2nd or 3rd Converted Minister I have been listening to. Thank you again.

As a Catholic who’s fond of apologetics, I have the same difficulty with arrogance in apologetics. My impulse is to correct them and remind them to be humble and gentle and loving in their videos and responses, but from my experience it can cause pride to put up defenses. I would be grateful if you, as a non-Catholic, would leave them a comment explaining they would open more hearts by humble, loving responses and critiques. They may listen to a non-Catholic - the target audience. God bless you and your loved ones❤

This is helpful. Do Catholics believe that their prayers can assist or lend grace to someone going through this purifying process - to shorten the time?
@KennyBurchard
@KennyBurchard 29 дней назад
Some believe this. For them, the analogy of faith (a Catholic term for looking for ways to explain things) is that, since purgation is a process, we may assist by our prayers the person who is undergoing their final purgation, just as we would pray for someone going through a trial in this present life. There is no difference. In both cases, the Lord, who loves them, is disciplining them as dear children (Hebrews 12:6-11). He is not, as a small number have seen it, TORMENTING or TORTURING them (though, as Hebrews says, no discipline is pleasant, but yields the fruit of righteousness). So, as you would pray for someone who is going through a trial, we assist with our prayers even those who, absent from the Body and present with the Lord, still do not have clear eyes to see him without the pain of some kind of blindness. Catholic ecclesiology is important here. There is ONE Church, the body of Christ. That Church is in heaven and on earth. Members of that Church are on a journey that you can break up into three stages if you will - 1. Our present sojourn in the world - The Church Militant 2. Our post-motem preparation for eterning - The Church in Purgation 3. Our future, full, eternal state - The Church Triumphant Since there is one body of Christ, and all are joined together, we help each other with our prayers. This is the image of a family. There is a notion among some Catholics that we can "get people OUT of purgatory with our prayers." While that language may be technically true in some regard, it may be better to think of it as "our prayers help get them through" the pain of it. How? By helping them to see that we are connected and that one person's life of sin, whether they knew it or not, brought harm, pain, and damage to the body of Christ. That body (the Church) rushes to them to help heal them while Christ, the head (with eyes like a flame of fire) purges them. Again, this is an analogy of faith.

@atobpe
@atobpe 26 дней назад
As an evangelical, I have spoken with many Roman Catholics and have gotten the idea that purgatory is a place where sins are purged in order to enter into heaven. So your presentation was very well presented and I learned something new from it. At 6:25 you state that “…we agree [that] Jesus paid the full price for the eternal punishment for our sins on the cross.” Then at 46:50 you state that even though you are a Christian, “you know … there are things about you that aren’t right, are still broken, bent, twisted, in need of healing, and you die and you go and you are going to look right into the face of Jesus… having God’s mark upon your life and yet still having some imperfections in your soul…” If I am interpreting you correctly, you are on the one hand saying that you believe that Jesus died and paid the full priced for all our your sins, yet when you die, you could still be broken, bent, twisted, in need of healing, and having some imperfections. My questions is thus: 1) What is the distinction between our sins (for which Jesus died and paid for in full) and the brokenness, bentness, twistedness, the need for healing, and the imperfections that you referenced near the end of the video? Did Jesus not die for those imperfections? 2) At 18:15, you displayed Hebrews 10:12-14 on the screen which states in part “For by a single offering (on the cross) He has perfected FOR ALL TIME those who are being sanctified. If He has perfected for all time, how can we die with those imperfections of which you spoke near the end of the video. 3) If there is a state of purgatory, based on your explanation it sounds as though it will be a purging that will be instantaneous as in the passage in Isaiah where the angel touched a burning coal to his tongue. Is it instantaneous? Does it last for days / months / years / centuries?
@TrueChristianityWithSandra

These are great questions! Though I’m no apologist I will try to answer them at least to an extent in case Kenny doesn’t have time to. We believe that humanity inherits Original Sin from our first parents, Adam & Eve. Original Sin, put simply, broke our relationship with God. By dying and rising again, Jesus has restored our friendship with God and in fact elevated it - making us children of God. Personal Sin (aka Actual Personal Sin) is sin committed by us by act of our free will. According to Scripture, even a just man “sins seven times a day”. Just think about the last “white lie” you told or the last time you felt jealous about something someone else had and you wished you had. So though our Original Sin is washed away (through Baptism) we continue to sin, though now we can be forgiven over and over. But nobody would claim they are suddenly perfect because they became a Christian! No, we still sin! So Jesus died for our sins but didn’t make us automatically sinless, as reality proves. But he did make it possible to overcome our inclination to sin! As for Heb 10:12-14, take note of the crucial wording, “those who ARE BEING SANCTIFIED”. It doesn’t read, “those who are already perfect”. We are sanctified throughout our lives. Yes, we will be perfected by the time we enter Heaven - can’t enter with any stain of sin - and will forever be so. Experience makes it obvious that even the best Christians we know are far from absolutely perfect when they die. Keep in mind, also, that even Peter remarked that Paul was “difficult to understand”. He was, after all, the most brilliant student of the most brilliant Rabbi in Israel. As for how long one is in Purgatory: It likely depends on the amount of stain that needs to be removed. A repentant serial killer will surely need a deeper cleaning than a just Christian who tended to complain a lot. According to Scripture, you ‘pay what you owe’. Luke 12:59. I hope Kenny is able to offer better and more in depth explanations, but perhaps this will help in the mean time. God bless❤️

My favorite purgatory reference in scripture is probably the most hidden and at the same time most profound. Matt 21: 30. Jesus tells the Chief Priests that Harlots and Publicans will enter the Kingdom of God BEFORE them. Did he mean they would die first? No. He was referring to Purgatory showing that their sin of pride will be a longer sentence than Prostitutes or corrupt tax collectors. Both will be saved but the harlot will get out of Purgatory before the Chief Priest

Amen and amen Kenny, thanks for the teaching, it's pretty clear. It's not the will of God for all to perish but have everlasting. Furthermore, Jesus paid the price in full on the cross. In other words, no one should go to hell. We will go through the process of refining ourselves until we become perfect. I now understand better than what I thought previously.

I appreciate your efforts because I want to have a biblically sound faith, but I just don't see it. After the atonement, what's left for the individual to pay?

Does God really hate Himself so much that He would sentence His dearly beloved Son to unjust condemnation? So as to acquit the guilty? If that is true, He is an infinitely UNJUST God - one in whom I can place no trust. Or, could it just be that all of this was done out of LOVE, as John insists? The faith was not invented in Europe, or in America.

Thank you brother Kenny. The patience to enlighthen our brothers and sisters in Christ is great and I truly admire. However there are few points that I might say I don't share in belief but its fine for me and hope for you too. Many religious people automatically judge that people with different understanding as false prophets, I say "true and false". True, because the scriptures has been clear that false prophets will intentionally lead people to a wrong understanding. False, because interpretations can vary unintentionally due to their background and experiences in life, level of spirituality, imperfection of man, etc. To continue, I believe that "until the time of Christ" for me is the time of our death. Not wanting to make this a very long statement I will just shortly list the following amongst many: * Christ can decide to forgive, heal, and make people worthy on the spot as shown in the Bible * The best example is the criminal in the cross with Christ when He said "I promise you that today you will be in Paradise with me" The fire that we go through is our life here on earth, its a never ending battle of Christ trying to lead us into perfection, while we live. Like the experience of Job. He knows the content of our heart, even though we sin 777 times daily. Our death is when judgment come, much like when the teacher says "Raise your pencils and submit you paper" you can't modify your answer anymore. Before that moment come God already know if you will be saved (listed on the book) because He knows our heart, our mistakes does not define us, its what we do after that. But both Salvation and Free Will are gifts. Even if the Grace or Gift of salvation had been accepted by us, some people may choose to throw the gift they previously accepted, and God has to honor the gift of Free Will. Finally I respectfully wouldn't be using the phrase "Catholics believe in this" such as that Purgatory is a Process or a Person, even if I agree with you... Because in layman's term, the phrase "means" majority of us Catholics, nominal and practicing alike "believe it just like you do", but that's not accurate isn't it. How can we say that if there is only a handful of the Catholic population who believe like you and me on this topic. Even if we look at the definition in Dictionaries, it is a state or a place as per Catholics's belief like Merriam webster, Cambridge, and other online sources. The sad thing is, no one in our religion tried to formally correct this. So I wouldn't be blaming if most of us, Catholic and non-Catholic made a default belief of what it is. Now if you mean "Catholic believe" as being the stand of our holy leaders in Vatican, know that for 52 Sundays masses in a year, purgatory is very rarey mentioned and explained.. Even on regular Bible studies, majority would take this as a place of cleansing of venial sins. But reading through the scriptures and making it an integral part of my being, I came to understand that its a process not a place, just like you, but we have be honest that its not how most of us believe and we need to correct it just like what you are doing. However brother, there are so many things that each Christian sect or denomination would differ on several contexts, but it shouldn't be a cause of division but a perfect reason to know more of Christ and His teachings. No man can understand or interpret the Holy scriptures 100% accurate. Yet the GOOD NEWS is, I think you will agree, that the bind that hold us together, is the fact that we both believe in Christ, and that He saved us and loved us.

When i see a catholic who preaches the cross like you, ... I definitively consider you a brother in Christ !! I didn't watch it all but you have a very interesting approach. I'm working on a prophetic interpretation of the story of Joshua. The part after we died and resurrected (passing of the Jordan river), we enter the promised land. But, before we get to our heritage and even before the destruction of Babylon (Jericho) we are to be circumcised. I thought but what does this mean? I found it is a circumcision of the flesh (see Ezechiel 44.9) that we havent done yet. In the book of Joshua it's a face to face with our shame (nudity, sin & shame are always linked), in the presence of Joshua (=Jesus). And it really really hurts. I explain it as the the judgment seat of Christ of 2 corinthians 5.10 where we all have to appear. Once that is done we can celebrate the passover all together, that is our union with Christ. I guess this might have some similarities with the way you view purgatory. I also believe in something else related to your interpretation of purgatory. But this time it's for the wicked who are now in the lake of fire. Psalm 107 and especially the verses 10-12 are very insightful as to the reason why people suffer in hell. But it also says they will come out. They have to be humiliated at heart in order to come to God. I believe God not only saved the elect among the living, he will save the dead. And thats why he's preparing us as priests for the coming kingdom. Romans 11.32 is very very interesting. See also, Isaiah 9, Romans 2... We also know Jesus will come to judge the living AND the dead. He has the keys of death and the gates will be opened. People think Im crazy but believe that the dead will have to return before the coming of Christ. Thats a lot of people... We know all will resurrect and obtain life again because there is a second resurrection. We know all will bow and confess Jesus is lord. And therefore the sacrifice of Christ really applies for all and saves all. That's the final defeat of death. Eternity in hell will be for those who suffer the 2nd death after they rebel at the very end. Because they loved the lie and hated the truth they will join Satan in the last rebellion against God. Even that is in the book of Joshua because just like satan has been kept in hell, the false God Adoni Tsedek (Lord of Justice, who is also king of Jerusalem), will be kept in a cave by Joshua until the day of Judgment where he will be crushed under our feet (happens in the same manner in Joshua). And finally the very last battle will be won against all the nations, numerous like the sand of the sea (same as Gog and Magog in revelation)

Understand that the spirit prison is not the hell of the damned. It was Sheol which was emptied after Jesus preached the Gospel to those souls, and after the gates of heaven were opened at His Ascension. Lazarus and the rich man is instructive here.

I love the way you articulate your position, and it is easy to see your loving heart for seeking God's Truth. As a lifelong disciple of Our Lord Jesus Christ, I have something that I would like to offer as another position to you and your followers. As you put forward your beliefs, and that of the Catholic doctrine I hear you say that we can define "the act by which we are purified" after death as "Purgatory." I believe that the Bible is very clear, stating in Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” We do know that if we are under the blood of Christ, that He has paid out debts in full, and we can miraculously receive the Holy Spirit in this current life. Even being made into a new creation, we still must suffer the penalty of death, ending our Earthy lives. Having salvation, abiding, and being sanctified through the Holy Spirit inside of us is happening while in this life. We actually do individually pay the penalty for sin at our death, and yet the insurmountable amount of punishment we deserve is satisfied through Jesus Himself covering over our multitudes of debt. The Holy Spirit testifies for us as sons and daughters under his blood! The mode by which the punishment due us is dealt with is explained in scripture by "The Passed Over" in Exodus. If the blood was over the door posts, "God's wrath passed over and saved those inside" hence "covered by the blood," despite the sinfulness of those inside! The same goes for all those who look to Christ and abide with him. This all leads to an even more beautiful picture of Grace! The undeserved gift!!! That is the Gospel! It is with brotherly love and a humble spirit that I say the following: Your portrayal of the Catholic position takes away from the power and beauty of what God did for us on the cross and His Grace! By saying we must still go through a painful process of burning away our sins till Jesus comes back is saying He didn't pay our debts in full on the cross. We actually are accused and found wanting at the moment of our death, but like you stated, we will be able to have right communion with God at that very moment! That would be impossible if we had not been purified by his Holy Spirit. When we die, we will be outside of the limitations of time and this current physical world. Your example of John in Revelation having his lips touched by the fire is odd because he hadn't died yet, so it is strange to apply that situation to all of us from that one moment. I agree that God does burn away our sins and for some it will be a lot more than others, if you want to title that moment "Purgatory" that is fine, but it will be the most humbling and joyful moment of our lives. The great "White throne Judgment" is when the true evil will be dethroned and cast down, bringing about the "Second Death." All those, not written in the book of life, are and will be awaiting that final Judgment during the "Day of the Lord." That is when all those who chose to fully rebel against Him will be cast into the lake of fire 🔥. If you want to call the process that God purifies us at death. "Purgatory," that is fine with me, I guess, but like you said, it is not a place. Not only that, it is not a person. Christ is the Righteous Judge, He is the One on the throne, and He is the refining fire, but there is nothing tangible or clear that says He is still going to be purifying us after death until His second coming. That process does not continue since He technically paid it once and for all. That passage was talking about “The Church” which is something that goes beyond all our little lifetimes and is the bridegroom of Christ. He is continuing to purify the church despite how many of us live and die. Perhaps that is why you thought it continues. I pray this comment comes across in the right light, and I'm sure you get lots of messages that contradict your videos. I almost never have commented on videos, but felt called to share how I see sound doctrine. Keep up what you are doing, and I appreciate your loving spirit for the lost. I would be happy to discuss this further and give you far more contextual verses that Prove this case. Thank you so much, Your brother in Christ, Timothy

Thanks for your comment. It's fine to make critiques. You have the right spirit, and civility and charity, and it's great to see that. All we require here is civility and the right spirit. People can disagree all they like, provided they properly "behave." Kenny and I are well familiar with Protestant doctrine, including in this regard. He was a pastor, with a Masters degree in theology, and I was an apologist and missionary as an evangelical, and have intensely studied apologetics and the Bible for now 43 years, including almost 23 years of full-time apologetics). So none of this is new to us. We understand the Protestant view; we simply no longer accept it, where it differs from the Catholic (and we would say, biblical) outlook. I would respond, in defending purgatory from Scripture, with the following argument. I've often used what I call the “nutshell” argument for purgatory: we must be without sin to enter into God's presence (Eph 5:5; Heb 12:14; Rev 21:27; 22:3, 14-15). Therefore, God must purge or wash away our sin to make us fit to be in heaven with Him. All agree so far. The only disagreement is whether this “divine cleansing” takes place in an instant or is more of a process. It's merely a quantitative difference; not an essential one. Purgatory is indicated most directly in 1 Corinthians 3:13, 15 (RSV, as throughout): "Each man's work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. . . . [15] If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire." The Bible also often refers to this same purging process taking place before we die: the very common biblical theme of God's chastising or purifying His people. By analogy, this shows us the same notions that lie behind the apostolic and Catholic doctrine of purgatory (methods of how God works, so to speak). When these passages are included, one can find (as I did) as many as fifty biblical passages that are relevant to purgatory. Scripture refers to a purging fire (in addition to 1 Corinthians 3 above): whatever “shall pass through the fire” will be made “clean” (Num 31:23); “Out of heaven he let you hear his voice, that he might discipline you; and on earth he let you see his great fire, and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire” (Dt 4:36); “we went through fire” (Ps 66:12); “For gold is tested in the fire, and acceptable men in the furnace of humiliation” (Sir 2:5); “our God is a consuming fire” (Heb 12:29); “do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal which comes upon you to prove you” (1 Pet 4:12); We also see passages about the “baptism of fire” (Mt 3:11; Mk 10:38-39; Lk 3:16; 12:50). The Bible makes frequent use also of the metaphor of various metals being refined (in a fire): “when he has tried me, I shall come forth as gold” (Job 23:10); “thou, O God, hast tested us; thou hast tried us as silver is tried” (Ps 66:10); “The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and the LORD tries hearts” (Prov 17:3); “I will turn my hand against you and will smelt away your dross as with lye and remove all your alloy” (Is 1:25); “I have refined you, . . . I have tried you in the furnace of affliction” (Is 48:10); “I will refine them and test them” (Jer 9:7); “I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested” (Zech 13:9); “he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi, and refine them like gold and silver” (Mal 3:2-3); “Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; [6] like gold in the furnace he tried them, . . . “ (Wis 3:5-6); “. . . your faith, more precious than gold which though perishable is tested by fire” (1 Pet 1:6-7). God cleansing or washing us is another common biblical theme: “Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! . . . Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean” (Ps 51:2, 7); “Blows that wound cleanse away evil; strokes make clean the innermost parts” (Prov 20:30; cf. 30:12); “the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgment and by a spirit of burning” (Is 4:4); “I will cleanse them from all the guilt of their sin against me” (Jer 33:8); “I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses” (Ezek 36:25); “cleanse them from sin and uncleanness” (Zech 13:1); “our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water” (Heb 10:22); “he was cleansed from his old sins” (2 Pet 1:9); “the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). Divine “chastisement” is taught clearly in many passages: “as a man disciplines his son, the LORD your God disciplines you” (Dt 8:5); “do not despise the LORD's discipline or be weary of his reproof,” (Prov 3:11); “I will chasten you in just measure” (Jer 30:11); “For thou didst test them as a father does in warning” (Wis 11:10); “God who tests our hearts” (1 Thess 2:4); “For the Lord disciplines him whom he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives. It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? . . . he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness” (Heb 12:6-7, 10). We are subject to God's indignation or wrath, insofar as we sin: “God will bring every deed into judgment” (Ecc 12:14); “I will bear the indignation of the Lord because I have sinned against him, . . . He will bring me forth to the light” (Mic 7:9). Purgatory is “written all over” the passages above. It all goes back to sin not being allowed in heaven. Once we get there, there is no longer mere "imputation" of righteousness. At that point it's actual righteousness in play. Therefore, we have to transition from our present sinful life or sate of being, to the sinless life we will live in heaven. So the question is: how does God bring that result about? Is it instantaneous? Zap! And we're there! Or is it more of a process? That's the heart of my argument in the 50 passages: by analogy, the Bible teaches that purging of sin is a process in this life. If that's true, then it stands to reason, or is plausible, to believe also that the same purging of sin in heaven is a process rather than an instantaneous "zap." And that is the essence of purgatory. Once the analogy is understood, then all of the passages I produced are relevant to understanding (and accepting) purgatory.

Kenny, I love your videos. I love your perspective and how you can tap into your inner "Pastor Kenny." That said, I would like to hear you clarify what you mean when you say, "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." That's not what the Bible actually says in 2 Corinthians 5: 8. Did I simply mis-hear you, or did you actually mean "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord?" Protestants ALWAYS get this verse wrong. I'm sure Pastor Kenny used to get this wrong, too. "We are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord." We would _rather_ be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

My problem with the doctrine of purgatory is knowing what happens to the dead at the Second Coming of Christ and the resurrection of the dead, more specifically what would happen to those who had just arrived in purgatory just before the coming of Christ. whether they had time to purify themselves or not.

It’s not a disconnected and impersonal process like going through a factory. It’s a cleansing with Jesus doing the work. Jesus knows what each person needs. When we separate Jesus from the process these kinds of speculations move us away from what is happening. Jesus will prepare each person for their eternal destiny. Again “arriving in purgatory” as though it is a location outside the presence of Jesus is not a good way to think of it. To be apart from the body is to be in the presence of the Lord.

I think we both agree that God first catches his fish and then cleans them. We might differ a bit on how or when this process of sanctification takes place. I am unclear about one thing in your presentation. Are you saying that in accordance with 1 Cor. 3:14, heaven is a reward? If not, how does this concept of a reward harmonize with the concept of purgatory, which you seem to think the passage is talking about?

I'm not a troll (just seeking out more knowledge), and I have a genuine question. If purgatory is a GOOD thing, that happens to all of us who are Christians when we die, why do so many of the Catholic prayers and devotions PRAY for souls IN purgatory? If those souls are in the presence of God undergoing a cleansing, are they in need of our prayers? I notice that most of the prayers also specify IN purgatory which seems to indicate a place, though I understand that wording/semantics could be at play here since it could mean IN [a state of] purgatory. ETA Other than this, the Biblical basis for purgatory seems to me to be solid based on the Scriptures you stated.

Thanks for being irenic. It’s a word I am trying to teach and model. These are valid questions. First the preposition. In. It can indicate both a locative meaning and a status meaning. In the car, in the pool, in the house. Or In love, in agony, in training, in 3rd grade. It’s more likely the preposition of status. But if there is a locative meaning then it’s “in the presence of God who is a consuming fire.” As far as prayer it relates to any other biblical reference to sharing comfort with others in the Body of Christ. Read these and let me know if you could see them finding fulfillment in the final purification: James 5:16 Gal 6:2 2 Cor 1:4 Etc. Since we are always in the body of Christ (in this life and in eternity) the ecclesial comfort and support of our prayers are actually themselves part of the final purification. If God can use the prayer of a mother in this life to help her son overcome a trial, he can use it in the next. Catholic ecclesiology embraces a metaphysic or real and embodied communion and connection that keeps us all present to one another in amazing ways. Catholics do not understand our ecclesial communion and ministry to one another to be terminated or “unpluggged” by physical death since we leave our bodies for a season, but never leave His.

I have not heard this like this. I have a few questions though… firstly a statement… the way purgatory has been preached in the past by Catholics has not been this… but I agree that there is a process. The question I have is… this is very different from praying for the dead… which some say Catholics do… if praying for the dead to get out of purgatory is still there in the Catholic Church, then surely it is redundant because it happens on the exact day of death (judgement) or at the second coming of Jesus. So is praying for the dead still a part of the Catholic doctrine? Now in terms of judgement, fire and the day of salvation, I totally agree that we all will be judged by the Lord, and I can’t imagine that there will be many who are not saved as through fire. I have come out of a group that, despite my ongoing feelings towards the people there, I have to admit are probably a cult. There doctrine has similarities to this, and many are really genuine people there.. but I have begun to look to see what the Lord says about their doctrine outside of that church. I find what you have said here fascinating to say the least. I will continue to watch carefully as I grew up very much taught against Catholicism. Having said that I am about to marry a Catholic lady.

The problem with calling these post mortem cleansing processes purgatory is that the word purgatory has a lot of historical baggage. In many ways the reformation was about the doctrine of purgatory at the time. Could a christian pay money to church to spring a loved one out or purgatory?

As a Protestant, I guess I am reassured catholics don't affirm the misconceptions you mentioned, but I am left more confused about what catholics do believe about purgatory. My understanding was it included change over time on the order of years/decades. Is the view then we will just be standing in his presence for years being refined? not simply refined at Judgement day?

At death, we are outside of time. Yet, there must be some form of what we view as time involved, or else purgatory would be a permanent state and that is contrary to revelation. Only Heaven and hell are permanent.

I have a concern about the purgatory doctrine and that is that it seems the writings of saints about purgatory are often dealing with dreams and visions of souls in purgatory. Are the writings of saints claiming dreams and visions about purgatory supposed to be accepted by all Catholics? Is it equal to Church dogma?
@JamesMoore-uq5oi
@JamesMoore-uq5oi Месяц назад
Only public revelation (Scripture and Sacred Tradition) is binding on all Catholics. Private revelation (such as visions of saints) is not binding, but may be worthy of belief on a personal level.

No, those dreams & visions are considered to be private revelation but not public doctrine or dogma.
