Thank you So.. much for your how to video! This is by far the best explained and demonstrated video on how to assemble and use the Black Berky primer.😆 I also checked out your channel and subscribed. Thank you again! Have a blessed and wonderful day!🌷
Thank you! I missed this part of the cleaning process. I have tried to do it with the rubber ring under the tap and gets the water flowing through, but its still dosnt filter through the bottom half of my filters. I have to buy and try this and hopefully it will work better 😊👍
I use rainwater. just purged 2 new filters yesterday. this morning they are each covered in a slippery film and VERY slow drip. I pre-filtered (charcoal) water and this film, still plugs the filters. I will make a sand pre-filter, next I had never heard of purging. ty
I’ve found that priming is easier with the filters in the top tank and the reservoir filled. I have the travel Berkey so there are only two filters, I can have it straddle the double sink in the kitchen. When priming this way, I have gravity on my side :-)
I have the Travel Berkey because it was the only one in stock - my question is how long does it take for the 2 filters to dry out if you're not using it daily & does that mean I need to re-prime?
@@HomesteadingWays Thanks also, the video is exactly what I needed to see. Priming using the disc the last two years has always been my least favorite moment using the Berkey
Thanks for such an easy-to-follow explanation of the Black Berkey Primer pump! I've watched other who use all kinds of wire etc. to hold the flexible tubing on the bulb and make a major pain out of what you show to be a simple process. I am curious about your place and experiences since you off-gridders are living a 50 year old dream of mine. I watch Doug and Stacey, Fy Nyth, Derek down in AZ, et al. I subscribed and now I have to run through your 'library' of vlogs and I look forward to it. I am just south of y'all down in the 'burbs of Chicago (ughhh!)
I'm glad I could help. Yep, I saw some of those videos too, and was worried when I went to do it myself. No problems! I hope it goes smoothly for you as well. And Hi, neighbor! 😉
Thank you for this video it truly helped, and I subscribed to your channel, I'm also wanting to be off grid! I'm in Canada near Quebec city were are you all located ! I'll check out your videos ! Best
Hi, I'm not a homesteader. If you are going to use well water, I wonder if you have thought of rigging a gross particles filter to run the well water through before placing the well water in the Berkey upper cylinder water tank. Cheers.
@@anniegaddis5240 next year look out for their black Friday sale. Or if you know more people who want to buy then do a group buy for a discount (that is what I did) and year you save money.
I know this is an old video but thank you. I like visual videos to explain things.I just ordered this primer so I need help.lol I always RU-vid everything even when I got my berky system. My water SEEMS slow to me so I ordered the primer. I'm the only one using it and not a lot.I hope this helps. How long does it take the berkey tank to fill? I have waited HOURS for it to fill. That SEEMS slow to me at first it ran faster. I purchased my berky about two years ago I think.Thank you again
So I’ve got: Priming Body (1) Tubes (2) Valves (2) Outlet elbow (1) Looks like an L Inlet Hex Nut (1) - This will screw to the filter How do I use the valves to connect the tubes to the body?
TY for sharing this! I have had a Burky for years and have never heard about this tool. I have both the black and white filters. I wonder if it can be used on the white filters as well?
They just had a cyber Monday sale on all items. I brought new white and black filters. The white is to remove fluoride from the water. This tool is a newer item from berkey. Wishing I brought one...next year
Looks like you had no trouble screwing on the black hexagon end onto the Berkey black filter. I tried to screw the hexagon shape black piece onto the 4 filters and it doesn't screw on. Upon inspection there is nothing visibly wrong with the threads, it just will not thread properly onto the filter. Any suggestions?
@@HomesteadingWays NO worries.. I just resorted to the regular method using the faucet and the large washer that came with the filters. What a waste on money the primer gadget was🤷🏻♂️
I had the same problem. I very carefully started to hand screw the hexagon shaped nut on the threaded stem of the filter, making sure I didn't cross thread it. I could only hand tighten it a couple of turns. When I tried to use it, air leaked in through the connection and it would not create a suction strong enough to pull water through the filter. I got a wrench that fit the hexagon nut and VERY CAREFULLY, so as not to snap the threaded stem in half, tightened the nut 3 or 4 more turns. This made an airtight connection and I could prime the filter. I experienced the same frustration with both filters. I plan to determine what diameter and pitch the threads are and carefully run a threading tap into the hexagon nut to hopefully make them a little cleaner. I will also run the plastic wing nut back and forth on the filter stem several times by hand to clean them and hopefully get things loose enough to be able to make a good hand tightened connection between the Black Berkey Prime and the black filters.
Filter out the sand before filtering next time..I wasn't the rainwater unless acid rain from our volcano clogs filters! (it doesn't) Sand and any contamients can be removed by cloth or cheesecloth (yes?) Aloha
I know this is an old comment, but same was happening to me and I realized that I had the valves facing the wrong way. Take a look at the package insert and put the hatch mark side in the bulb exactly as pictured, and make sure both valves are facing the same direction as opposed to facing each other. Once I fixed that, it worked fine!
Great video. I’ve had my Berkey since Feb 2020....I noticed it was developing black mold in the upper chamber where the stainless rolls in. Bad design, IMO. It’s a difficult area to clean well, even with bleach. I read that I may have had it placed in a sunny area that caused it to heat up....is that true, anybody?
@@katiecat5500 using the rubber disc that come with them you prime the fluoride filters. They also sell a blue silicon sleeve for them in the maintenance kit
Got my first Berkey today, it came with a "prime-rite" primer but no "purger" is it an extra thing to buy? I got here because the directions say to prime the filters but don't say to purge them. But on the directions for the fluoride filters it says to purge. So do I purge and prime? Or will it prime after I've purged? Yes I've been to the website, watched their video on priming both filters but it never mentions purging. Sigh...lol
You only purge when the filters start taking longer and longer to clean your water. And yes, this is a separate purchase used specifically in a bucket or pitcher of water. Link is in description.
@@HomesteadingWays But the instructions for the fluoride filter says to purge it first. But the directions for the whole kit says just to prime it. I don't think I need anything to purge it as the directions call for filling it with water, shaking it for a minute then running water through until clear. But I suppose once it's purged, it is then primed. I was just wondering if I had to do both.
Thank you for the video and Berkey, if I could kick the person and the video people that designed this pump, put arrows on it and build a better unit, I could buy a fish pump and prime the filter faster, the little hand pump for the price is a joke, man wish people would just stay away from this company ripping people off.
It would depend on how much water you use and what has to be filtered out. When we had to get water from a well as oposed to rain water the filters slowed down due to the sand in the water.
