Wadding up a piece of aluminum foil is also another method of blocking the end of a tube. On a long tube, it is possible to shove the foil ball into the tube to reduce the volume to save on the inert gas.
Another option is to use Solar Flux type B on the backside of the weld. Not beautiful, but much easier and does a very adequate job of shielding the backside of the weld without the fuss, hassle and argon expense of a back-purge.
I could see that being pretty useful for certain situations like welding flanges to tubing where it is difficult to adequately cover up to hold argon and still provide clearance to make the weld.
Last time I attempted a purge, I was tigging a Sched 10, 3" Stainless Steel pipe, no gap on the joint, my amps at 90. I was told to keyhole the root pass but couldn't for the life of me. It looked like fuckin garbage. I just kept heating up my arc in one spot hoping it would open up my keyhole but no luck. Any advice?
No, it contains CO2 which is a reactive gas and reactive gasses are what cause the issues the we're trying to avoid by doing this. You want inert gasses for purging/shielding like pure argon or a mixture of argon and helium. Hope that helps, great question - Taz.
I thought doing things twice was for the rich 😂 I'm being dramatic, but I was just interested to hear if there was another reason old mate had aside from time or cost - Taz.
thank you to showing how does it look inside, but your pipe is at least 2mm thick, and you use add rod at least 1.2-1.6mm thick, ( i did it on 1.5mm thick pipe) and welds inside when purged look great but it still reduces inner diameter of pipe and are not slick as pipe is and it would be better to flat it by grinding
They want to be cheap? Stainless does require a lens but it def helps get better results. Many jobs don’t have them due to price and the lens can get dirty and need more replacing
