You've been promoted to Purple Belt in BJJ. What does your martial arts journey look like now?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu belt ranks are very hard to attain and take longer than any other martial art I can think of. Why is it so hard and is it worth all the time and effort? What can you do when training jiu jitsu to better prepare yourself for each rank all the way to black belt?

Are you a purple belt, or close to earning your purple? What is your journey like so far? Have you experienced anything discussed in this video? How is your relationship with Jiu Jitsu at this point?

I’m a new purple belt. I feel like I still have so much to learn and get better at. While I have a few go to techniques and a couple submissions I hit consistently, I want to get better at set ups and widen my arsenal of useful techniques and submissions for my game. There’s so many submissions that I really haven’t played around with yet. While I “know” them, I don’t know the details to making them work etc

@@timrob0420 Congratulation on earning your purple belt. This is a great point in your journey. Techniques will sink in a bit faster as some of the more basic details won't need a lot of your attention, so be sure to open your mind to the more complex and dial into the finite details of the moves you wish to add to your arsenal as this is the rank where you will certainly shape your game more so than ever before. thank you for the comment.

I earned my purple belt in 2017 then took time off. I got back into it recently and a two stripe. I'm much more seasoned for a purple belt. So I don't force taps out except for when I face a really good (teacher or competitor level) brown or black belt. For lower belts I'll test defenses and correct or teach when I see positions they don't understand. But I try to flow with all levels. Practice is a place to improve nuances for where I'm good and try guards, guard breaks or leg entanglements that I'm less familiar with. I'm guaranteed to be tapped trying new moves against seasoned opponents. But it just helps me pressure test those same moves and positions. I treat those places like I've become a white belt again. So I'm climbing the skill ladder again 😁 But I felt more like this as a high blue belt. Always needing to tap people. But I progress faster now that I don't worry about the tap so much. Everything comes together easier now.

This is a really interesting listen. I have just been promoted to purple belt after about 10 years training. I'm 55 and had a total hip replacement 18 months ago that stopped me rolling for quite a while. I still struggle to contain some of the younger, bigger, more athletic white and blue belts and have to fight off the imposter syndrome a bit at the moment. I am really enjoying teaching when asked and also rolling with lower ranks and allowing them to get things going (ie I'll decide when to defend and attack and allow them to work.) I've decided to really concentrate on my half-guard game both from top and bottom - it suits my, er, longevity, quite nicely😅. Thanks for the advice.

@@Krufessor_Rad one question for you my wife also trains with me she has been in 3 weeks now a larger 3 stripe white belt roughed her up manhandled her prior life my old coach used me as them gym enforcer should I give the guy a super rough roll as a lesson or ask my coach what his remedy in this situation will be wife 5ft 2 130 the guy 6ft 1 200lbs my coach is aware that she is hurt should I ask how he is going to prevent this in the future
@Krufessor_Rad
@Krufessor_Rad 2 года назад
@@ryanhogue6094 great question,. I am very firm with my students as to how they should be rolling with the women on our mats. With that said, I am the enforcer on the mats and I take it upon myself to handle things as I see they are best handled. This is so I am able to protect my students and set the tone. Sometimes this is done with a rough roll from me, or a conversation. Different strokes for different folks and all that. As the head instructor I should know how to employ different teaching tactics for all the various individuals under my tutelage. I also tell my students that we are all adults and teammates so we should be able to talk to each other, so I would say, if you're comfortable with it, you could speak to the teammate directly. If you're not comfortable with that, speak to your professor for him to handle it, or for him to advise you how he'd like you to handle it. The professor is responsible for the culture of the school and the behavior of everyone on their mats. Lastly, I advise all my female students to use their voice. They must let the men know when they are being meatheads and putting them in danger. If a person is not addressed in the moment they tend to forget what they did, or how they did it when it's brought up later. I hope all of that makes sense and helps you and your wife. I would hate for her to lose her enthusiasm for BJJ due to such an experiences.

@@Krufessor_Rad just curious about your thoughts 💭 on the interplay between the guidance of 1) purple belts should focus on deepening their understanding of the moves that already work well for them i.e. don’t be a move collector…versus…2) stay open minded, keep adding to your game, close up those holes, let your game evolve, take what they give you (which seems to favor a diversity of moves).
@Krufessor_Rad
@Krufessor_Rad Год назад
@@FR-ty5vn yes. You would want to be able to do both as you're moving towards brown belt. So at first, at PB, you should be looking to really gain a deeper understanding of what is working for you as you truly shape your BJJ game. As you progress as a PB, you definitely will not need to stay on those moves alone or that game. Are you in a position to add things? Grow your arsenal and then grow your skills overall. Then you can evolve and add to an already solid skillset. Always taking time to resharpen skills that may dull from time to time as you stack more and more moves. Its sustainability and growth.

I finally got my purple a few weeks ago, after 20 years of inconsistent training. I still can't believe that it's real. LOVE this video... Great treatment of the subject. Also, to your point of tapping to a lower belt, I heard it put this way: "I didn't tap to my opponent, I tapped to the art." Something to think about! Always stay humble, and realize that there's always more to learn.

not if you've been training for a long time. I know a 23 year old black belt, but of course he was training since childhood. Even it you started at 18 or 19 a purple at 23 is about right with consistent training.

Being purple almost one year, I can say that your understanding of gentle art is just deeper and you see what area for improvement you need. I will give my case. From white belt I felt in love with Ashi Garami, I could find it automatically, when you're even scissor-sweeped, and submitting from time to time black belts with heel hooks and giving lessons to them how to correctly attack legs. However this is just one-sided game, and it lacks of many things. Ashi Garami based game considers you almost always plays guard, no passing, no standing, no upper body attacks. Frankly - ugly game. Jiu-Jitsu is much much more than only heel hooks. I am now in development of standing game, learning attacking back using hand fighting, front headlock system, passing guard, guard retention and other shining part of our beloved art.
